Gymnogeophagus labiatus is a thick-lipped eartheater from the cool, rock-bottomed streams of the Laguna dos Patos and Lagoa Mirim drainages of southernmost Brazil and northern Uruguay. Among the subtropical "bare-headed" eartheaters of the far south of the cichlid range, it is one of the few that broods its young in the mouth, and its swollen, fleshy lips — the trait that gives it its name — set it apart from its smooth-mouthed relatives. It is a fish of clear, current-swept water that runs cold in winter and warm in summer, and its biology is tuned to that seasonal rhythm rather than to the steady warmth of the tropics.

Taxonomy & naming

Gymnogeophagus labiatus was described by the German naturalist Reinhold Friedrich Hensel in 1870, originally in the genus Geophagus, from material collected in the province of Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil. The species was transferred to Gymnogeophagus, the southern eartheater genus erected by Alípio de Miranda Ribeiro in 1918, and was redescribed in detail by Roberto E. Reis and Luiz R. Malabarba in their 1988 revision of the genus (Revista Brasileira de Zoologia), the work that remains the taxonomic foundation for all the southern eartheaters. Gymnogeophagus is a small, tightly knit genus — roughly nine to ten described species plus several undescribed forms — restricted to the Río de la Plata system and the coastal drainages of southern Brazil and Uruguay. The genus is defined by two osteological features set out by Reis and Malabarba: the absence of supraneural bones, and a forward-directed spine on the first dorsal-fin pterygiophore. Within the genus, Gymnogeophagus labiatus belongs to the mouthbrooding lineage rather than the substrate-spawning one; molecular work by Wimberger, Reis and Thornton (1998) on mitochondrial DNA examined how mouthbrooding and mating systems evolved across the genus, and the labiatus group — the thick-lipped fishes — is generally treated as among the more basal of the mouthbrooders. Several closely allied, still-undescribed thick-lipped populations (often labelled "Gymnogeophagus sp. aff. labiatus") occur in northern Uruguay and complicate the species' exact boundaries. The species' own type author left an early and unusually detailed account of its habits: Hensel's 1870 field notes, taken under the name Geophagus scymnophilus (a form now folded into the synonymy of labiatus), describe a guarding parent shepherding its brood along the shallow bank of a stream, sheltering the fry in its mouth whenever the observer approached and releasing them again once the danger had passed — behaviour Hensel documented so closely that he resorted to firing a shot near a guarding fish simply to isolate it from its brood for capture. Hensel assumed, reasonably enough given the fish's stocky build in that account, that this parental duty fell to the male; later work, including Reis and Malabarba's 1988 revision and captive observations by Stieglitz, instead established the brooding parent as the female — a correction that stands as a small but telling reminder of how much of this species' biology had to be worked out well after its original description.

Morphology

Gymnogeophagus labiatus is a moderately deep-bodied, laterally compressed eartheater reaching about 6 in in standard length (FishBase records a maximum of 6 in SL), with the largest individuals in wild samples being males — a population study on the Sinos river recorded males up to roughly 6 in SL, well beyond any female taken. Its single most diagnostic feature is the one encoded in its name: conspicuously enlarged, thickened and fleshy lips, far more developed than in its smooth-mouthed congeners. Body colour is a warm olive to brassy ground broken by iridescent steel-blue to blue-green lines and spots, and the dorsal and caudal fins carry sparkling striations — predominantly straight blue lines in most populations, though some localities show elongated spots instead, and colour varies markedly from one drainage to the next. The most vivid wild fish, from the far northeastern Lagoa Mirim system around Centurión on the Brazil–Uruguay border, show strawberry-red cheeks and flanks veined with metallic blue. Sexual dimorphism is pronounced. Males grow distinctly larger than females, develop the strongest colour, and at breeding time the dominant males raise a fatty nuchal hump on the forehead — the typical breeding badge of the mouthbrooding gymnos — while females stay smaller, plainer and hump-less.

Habitat

The species is endemic to the Laguna dos Patos and Lagoa Mirim (the Merín or Mirim lagoon) drainages straddling the far south of Brazil — the states of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina — and the adjacent Atlantic-slope basins of northern Uruguay. Documented Brazilian localities include the Rio dos Sinos, about 6 mi northwest of Santo Antônio da Patrulha, from which trade specimens have been collected; in Uruguay, Brandt Andersen recorded the species (provisionally as 'G. labiatus Centurión') from a small river near the town of Centurión in 1996, and its presence has also been confirmed in the Arroyo de las Averías, between Treinta y Tres and Valentines. Unlike the still-water, sand-and-silt eartheaters of the lowland tropics, Gymnogeophagus labiatus is a fish of flowing upland water: Reis and Malabarba (1988) characterised its habitat as small streams and rivers with rocky substrates, strong current, and clear, cool water, and field collectors describe finding it over rocky or sandy bottoms in flowing reaches, frequently alongside Gymnogeophagus gymnogenys and the substrate-spawning Gymnogeophagus rhabdotus. In the wild the species is notably timid, living a comparatively reclusive life close to the bottom rather than ranging in the open. Weidner's description of the Centurión stream captures the typical microhabitat: a narrow, nameless watercourse with both bed and banks composed largely of bare rock, where the water measured pH 7.5 and a conductivity of about 60 µS/cm at 81 °F. These are subtropical waters with a strong seasonal temperature swing rather than tropical constancy. In a year-round study on the upper Sinos river at Caraá (Rio Grande do Sul), water temperature ranged from about 55 °F in midwinter (July) to 80 °F in midsummer (January), and rainfall was spread through the year without a sharp dry season. Regional waters of the Patos and Mirim systems are typically soft to moderately mineralised and circumneutral, roughly pH 6.5–7.5. As a clear, current-loving stream fish it lives in the shallow, well-oxygenated band of these rivers — on the order of the upper one to two metres — rather than in deep open water; precise depth ranges have not been formally published, so the figure given here is the documented shallow-stream band, not a measured maximum.

Feeding

Like all eartheaters, Gymnogeophagus labiatus feeds largely from the bottom, taking in mouthfuls of substrate and sifting them for edible particles — small invertebrates, larvae, detritus and organic matter — which it separates from the sand and grit before expelling the rest through the gill openings and mouth. FishBase places it at a trophic level near 3.4, consistent with an opportunistic benthic omnivore that leans toward small animal prey. Field observers describe the southern gymnos generally as omnivores that take small crustaceans, insect larvae, tiny fishes and some algae as opportunity allows. The strikingly thick lips of this species are presumed to assist feeding among and around the rocks of its fast-water habitat, helping it work prey from crevices and uneven surfaces, although this functional role has not been formally tested. In the wild it also browses cushions of algae growing on rock surfaces and ingests a meaningful amount of plant material in the process, which is why keepers are advised to make sure a captive diet carries a genuine vegetable component rather than treating it as an afterthought. In its stream community it forages the rocky and sandy bottom alongside other eartheaters and pike cichlids, partitioning the substrate rather than competing head-on for the same microhabitat.

Mating

Gymnogeophagus labiatus has a polygynous, male-dominated mating system typical of the mouthbrooding gymnos and quite different from the monogamous pairing of the substrate-spawning species. In clear-water streams, collectors have watched a single dominant male hold and patrol a territory within which several females tend their broods; the male courts and spawns with multiple females while each female alone takes on the care of the young. Reproduction is strongly seasonal, keyed to the southern-hemisphere spring and summer. The year-long Sinos river study found that females control the timing: ripe females appeared from September through February, while males carried developed gonads through much of the year, and the female gonadosomatic index rose with lengthening photoperiod — the cue that synchronises spawning with the warm, productive months. The smallest ripe male in that sample was about 4 in and the smallest ripe female about 2 in standard length, and the largest size classes contained only males, underscoring the strong size dimorphism that accompanies the species' breeding system.

Breeding

Gymnogeophagus labiatus is a maternal, delayed (larvophilous) mouthbrooder: the female spawns onto a cleaned hard surface and the eggs are fertilised in the open, then taken up into her mouth — at or shortly before hatching — where the developing larvae are sheltered and oxygenated until they can swim and feed. FishBase classifies the species as a larvophile mouthbrooder, and Reis and Malabarba (1988) confirmed mouthbrooding for it directly, with females found guarding offspring in the buccal cavity. Fecundity is low, as expected of a brooder limited by the volume of the mouth: a study of a wild Sinos river population measured an absolute fecundity of about 64 to 174 oocytes (mean roughly 113), far below the thousands produced by open-substrate spawners such as Geophagus brasiliensis. Ovaries showed asynchronous oocyte development, indicating that females spawn in multiple batches across the long spring-to-summer reproductive season rather than in a single annual clutch. The low fecundity, batch spawning and intensive maternal mouthbrooding together place the species at the "equilibrium" (K-selected) end of fish life-history strategies, investing heavily in a small number of well-protected young — a pattern shared with its close relative Gymnogeophagus lacustris. Its brooding behaviour resembles that of Gymnogeophagus gymnogenys, and — unusually for a mouthbrooding cichlid — a brooding female does not withdraw from the group to guard her clutch in isolation: aquarium observations by Stieglitz found that females carrying eggs on a root or stone were often noticed only because they kept returning repeatedly to that one spot, even though for the rest of the time they continued to move and shelter with the wider shoal. Once the eggs hatch, at roughly 48–72 hours, the larvae free themselves from the shells and are taken up by the female; by about a week they are free-swimming and being weaned off her brood care, though threatened fry continue to dart back toward her mouth in the interim, the dark circle of her open gape serving as the signal to take refuge.

In the aquarium

Gymnogeophagus labiatus is an uncommon but genuinely rewarding aquarium fish, kept mainly by eartheater and South-American cichlid specialists; it has been slowly gaining a following for its colour and its hardy, even temperament. The single most important — and most often mishandled — requirement is temperature. This is a subtropical, seasonally cool-water fish, and like the other southern gymnos it does poorly in a permanently warm tropical tank: kept too hot for too long, these fish become listless and drab and are short-lived. A seasonal regime suits it best, with a cool winter rest and a warmer spawning season in the low-to-mid 70s °F (about 72–79 °F); most keepers hold the winter minimum in the high 50s to low 60s °F (around 57–63 °F), though Weidner reports that breeders such as Stieglitz have taken the rest phase considerably colder still, down to about 46–54 °F for two to three months, before slowly raising the temperature back to around 77 °F — a regime that leaves the fish more colourful and noticeably more ready to spawn once the water warms again. Stieglitz kept a group of seven together through such a cycle with the fish notably peaceable toward one another, a useful data point for group size. Long-term, an unheated or only lightly heated tank in a temperate room is ideal, and in mild climates it can be summered outdoors. Water chemistry is undemanding — neutral to slightly hard, roughly pH 6.5–7.5 — and stable, well-oxygenated, moderately moving water mirrors its rocky-stream origin.

A tank of at least 55 US gal (around 50 US gallons) is appropriate for this larger, active species; smaller quarters cramp it. Furnish it as a flowing rocky stream: a sand or fine-gravel base that lets it sift and dig, with rounded stones, cobble and driftwood to define territories and sightlines, and good current and filtration. The species is plant-tolerant and not a serious digger by eartheater standards, so robust, well-anchored plants survive. Diet is easy — it accepts dry, frozen and live foods readily — though a varied menu including frozen invertebrates, small crustaceans and sinking pellets keeps colour and condition best, and some vegetable content rounds it out.

Temperament is one of its virtues: the mouthbrooding gymnos are generally less aggressive than the substrate-spawning ones, and Gymnogeophagus labiatus makes a good community resident with medium-sized tetras, Corydoras, Ancistrus and similarly mannered fishes, turning territorial mainly around breeding. Because the system is polygynous, a productive group is one male with several females in a tank large enough to spread out; a lone pair can see the female harried. For breeding, raise the temperature and lengthen the photoperiod to simulate the southern spring after a cool winter rest. The chief mistakes keepers make are running the fish too warm year-round, crowding it, and expecting tropical constancy from a fish whose whole physiology is built around a cool-and-warm seasonal cycle.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Gymnogeophagus labiatus as Least Concern (assessment published 2022, dated 7 November 2018, by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade, ICMBio). The assessment lists its occurrence in Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina) and notes that the threats it faces are diffuse — siltation, removal of riparian vegetation, and loss of habitat heterogeneity — but judges that, as a habitat generalist, these do not place the overall population at risk of extinction. It carries no CITES or CMS listing and is harmless to humans. The species is not heavily exploited; it appears in the ornamental trade only in modest numbers. The broader concern for the far-southern eartheaters is the steady degradation of their clear, rocky stream habitats: in the Lagoa Mirim (Merín) basin in particular, rice farming and the associated alteration of watercourses have been flagged by field workers as a growing pressure on the region's stream fishes. None of this is documented as a present threat to Gymnogeophagus labiatus specifically, but it is the backdrop against which the long-term health of its restricted range should be read.
