Gymnogeophagus mekinos is a slender, olive-and-gold eartheater from the río Negro, a major tributary of the lower río Uruguay in southern Brazil and Uruguay. Described only in 2015, it is one of the cluster of look-alike species formerly lumped under Gymnogeophagus gymnogenys, and it takes its name from its noticeably elongate build. Like its closest relatives it is a larvophilic mouthbrooder of cool, strongly seasonal subtropical streams — a fish adapted to water that warms in the southern summer and falls toward single digits Celsius in winter, far from the tropical conditions most aquarists associate with South American cichlids.

Taxonomy & naming

Gymnogeophagus mekinos was described in 2015 by Luiz R. Malabarba, Maria Cláudia Malabarba and Roberto E. Reis in the journal Neotropical Ichthyology, as one of five new Gymnogeophagus erected in a single revision of the rio Uruguay drainage. The holotype, an adult male of 3.5 in standard length, is held at the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul (MCP 19296); it was taken in the rio Piraizinho, a tributary of the rio Negro on the road from Bagé to Dom Pedrito, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, in December 1992, with hundreds of paratypes from across the rio Negro basin in both Brazil and Uruguay. The genus Gymnogeophagus was established by the Brazilian naturalist Alípio de Miranda-Ribeiro in 1918 for the 'bare-headed' eartheaters of the La Plata system, and its monophyly is anchored by two unusual derived traits: the complete absence of supraneural bones and the presence of a forward-projecting spine on the first dorsal-fin pterygiophore. Within the genus, mekinos belongs to the gymnogenys species complex — a tight knot of allopatric, externally similar mouthbrooders diagnosed by the loss of the oblique bar between the eye and the nape and the possession of a black bar that drops backward from the dorsal contour near the dorsal-fin origin. For decades these populations passed collectively as Gymnogeophagus gymnogenys; molecular work foreshadowed the split, with the fish recovered as 'Gymnogeophagus sp. A' by Wimberger and colleagues in 1998 and as 'Clade 1' of the gymnogenys complex by Pereyra and García in 2008 before Malabarba's team formalized it. The species epithet 'mekinos' is taken from the Greek for prolonged or elongate, in reference to the comparatively slender body, and is treated as a noun in apposition.

Morphology

This is a small-to-medium eartheater: the type series reaches about 4 in (roughly 4 in) standard length, with FishBase citing 4 in SL as the maximum, so a large adult is a fish of around 5 in total length. The defining feature, and the source of the name, is the elongate, laterally compressed body — body depth runs only 34.9 to 38.3 percent of standard length (mean about 36.7), against the deeper 38.6 to 44.2 percent of true Gymnogeophagus gymnogenys, the single trait that most reliably separates the two. The snout is pointed, the eye relatively small and set near the dorsal profile, and mature males develop a small fatty (adipose) hump on the nape and draw out the soft dorsal and anal fins into pointed tips. Counts are typical of the genus: 13 to 15 dorsal spines with 9 to 11 soft rays, three anal spines, and 8 to 10 anal soft rays. In life, breeding males are largely olivaceous above shading to bright yellow on the belly, with faint vertical bars, a faint-red wash on the soft dorsal and caudal fins, and rows of pale roundish spots scattered across the unpaired fins; the pelvic fins are darkly pigmented. The clinching colour mark for males is a conspicuous oblique dark band running from the eye to the front edge of the head — among Gymnogeophagus, only mekinos and gymnogenys carry it, and the two are then told apart by mekinos's continuous iridescent olive sheen versus the discrete blue scale-centre spots of gymnogenys. Females and juveniles are paler and browner, with a more conspicuous vertical bar across the cheek, clearer flank barring in small fish, and some scale rows bearing bright blue spots; this is a sexually dimorphic species in both colour and finnage.

Habitat

Gymnogeophagus mekinos is restricted to the río Negro of Uruguay and its headwaters in southernmost Brazil — the río Negro being a large tributary that joins the lower río Uruguay, itself part of the greater La Plata basin. The describers documented it across the Uruguayan río Negro and its affluents (the río Tacuarembó, río Caraguatá, río Yi and numerous arroyos) and in the upper río Negro drainage around Bagé in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil; the molecular 'Clade 1' of Pereyra and García further suggests it reaches the río Tacuarí and río Yaguarón (rio Jaguarão) of the laguna Mirim system through a documented stream-capture connection with the río Negro, so its true range probably edges into the Mirim drainage as well. The type and reference material comes from small to medium subtropical rivers, arroyos and associated lateral ponds rather than large open water. The single most important environmental fact about the species is temperature: these are cool-water, strongly seasonal fish of the far south of the continent, where summers are warm but winter water can drop into the low teens or below — a regime closer to a temperate stream than to the Amazon. Published in-situ chemistry specific to mekinos is sparse, but the La Plata tributaries it occupies are generally soft to moderately mineralized and near neutral, broadly in the pH 6.5 to 7.5 band, and the fish lives in the shallow, accessible river margins (on the order of the upper 3–7 ft) where eartheaters forage over sand and silt. The species' Extent of Occurrence is estimated at roughly 23,300 square kilometres.

Feeding

Like all members of its genus, Gymnogeophagus mekinos is a benthic 'eartheater' — it feeds by taking mouthfuls of sand and fine sediment, sorting edible particles internally and expelling the cleaned grit through the gills and mouth. Its dentition fits this winnowing habit: small conical jaw teeth for picking, and a robust lower pharyngeal tooth plate in which the posteromedial teeth are enlarged and molariform, well suited to crushing small invertebrates and hard-shelled prey before they pass to the gut. FishBase places the species at an estimated trophic level of about 3.3, the figure of a benthic invertivore rather than a herbivore or piscivore. No detailed wild gut-content study of mekinos has been published, but congeners take a mixed diet of aquatic insect larvae, micro-crustaceans, small molluscs, detritus and incidental plant and algal material sifted from the bottom, and observers note that Gymnogeophagus readily rise off the substrate to take food in the water column as well. In its home streams it functions as a substrate-turning forager of the shallow margins, part of the same eartheating guild that the genus fills throughout the La Plata system.

Mating

Detailed courtship has not been described for mekinos specifically, but it shares the social and reproductive biology of the gymnogenys complex, all of which are mouthbrooders. These fish do best in female-skewed groups, and males can be markedly aggressive toward one another and toward females not in spawning condition, so the natural social structure is effectively a loose harem in which a dominant, brightly coloured male holds court over several females. The pronounced sexual dimorphism — the male's olive-gold sheen, dark eye-to-snout band, adipose hump and produced fin tips versus the plainer, browner female — is courtship signalling, the male advertising condition to ripe females on a small display territory. Crucially, reproduction is keyed to the seasonal warming of the water: in the genus, breeding behaviour switches on only once temperatures climb out of the winter low (in related species, from around 61 °F upward), so pair formation and spawning are a spring-and-summer event rather than a year-round one. The male's role is largely display and territory defence; as in most mouthbrooders, the heavy parental investment falls to the female.

Breeding

Gymnogeophagus mekinos is a larvophilic (delayed) mouthbrooder, the reproductive mode shared by Gymnogeophagus gymnogenys and the rest of this complex and confirmed for the genus in the comparative work of Wimberger, Reis and Thornton (1998). The pattern is distinctive: the pair first spawns in the open, depositing eggs on a cleaned hard surface such as a stone or a flat patch of substrate exactly as a substrate-spawning cichlid would, and the eggs are tended there for two to several days. Only once the eggs are near hatching, or the larvae have just emerged, does the female take them up into her mouth to brood and protect them through the vulnerable free-swimming stage — the delay that defines a larvophile, as opposed to the ovophilous mouthbrooders that take eggs immediately at spawning. The exact clutch size for mekinos has not been published; in this small-bodied complex broods are modest, on the order of a few dozen to perhaps a hundred or more young depending on female size, and the rate of egg development before pickup is governed by temperature. Spawning is seasonal, triggered by rising water temperature after the winter cool period; in close relatives reproductive behaviour begins around 61 °F and intensifies as the water warms further. Parental care is essentially maternal once the larvae are in the mouth, with the female releasing and re-collecting fry until they are large enough to fend for themselves.

In the aquarium

Gymnogeophagus mekinos is a rarely traded fish, occasionally available to specialists rather than a regular import, and it is not a beginner's species — but the difficulty lies less in day-to-day care than in respecting its biology. The genus has a hard-won reputation for being easy to spawn at first and then collapsing after a year or two in the hands of keepers who treat them as tropical fish. They are subtropical, strongly seasonal animals, and they require an annual temperature rhythm: a genuine cool period (water comfortably into the teens Celsius, dropping toward the low teens or below in 'winter') followed by warming in 'summer' to trigger breeding. Kept at constant tropical temperatures they may breed once or twice and then steadily decline. A heater is often used only to set a winter floor, with the room's seasonal swing doing the rest.

Water chemistry is forgiving — the genus tolerates essentially any ordinary tap water, soft or moderately hard, and a near-neutral pH around 6.5 to 7.5 suits mekinos well — but water quality is not. Gymnogeophagus are notably sensitive to nitrate: in related species, levels as low as around 90 mg/L can damage juveniles and roughly 110 mg/L can leave even adults prone to disease. That makes generous filtration and disciplined, regular water changes the single most important husbandry habit for this fish. A fine sand substrate is essential so the fish can sift and feed naturally; gravel both frustrates the behaviour and risks gill abrasion.

Because males can be quarrelsome, a larger footprint and harem stocking are recommended — one male to three or more females in a tank long enough to break up sightlines, with rockwork, driftwood and a few flat spawning surfaces. As a small eartheater (well under 6 in), a single group does not need an enormous tank, but floor area matters more than volume. Feeding is straightforward: they take quality sinking pellets, frozen and live invertebrates (bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp) and will rise for floating foods, so a varied menu keeps them in colour and condition. Tankmates should be peaceful, similarly cool-tolerant species; avoid heat-loving tropicals that cannot share the seasonal regime, and avoid boisterous fish that would outcompete a deliberate substrate-sifter at feeding time. For experienced keepers willing to run a seasonal tank, this is a rewarding, manageable cichlid; for anyone expecting a set-and-forget tropical, it is a fish that will quietly fail.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Gymnogeophagus mekinos as Least Concern (assessment published 2023; assessed 14 April 2023 by E. Fernando of the IUCN Freshwater Biodiversity Assessment team), with the population trend listed as Unknown. The describers reached the same conclusion in 2015, reporting the species as relatively frequent and abundant within the rio Negro basin, citing an Extent of Occurrence of about 23,300 square kilometres, and noting no specific threats. It carries no CITES listing. The species is not a meaningful target of fisheries and only sporadically enters the aquarium trade, so direct exploitation is not a concern. The broader caveat is that it is a range-restricted endemic of a single tributary system of the lower río Uruguay, and the rivers of the La Plata basin face the familiar pressures of agricultural land use, water abstraction, damming and pollution across southern Brazil and Uruguay. None of these is currently documented as a population-level threat to mekinos, but a narrow-range, cool-water specialist warrants ongoing attention as land and water use in its catchment intensify.
