Taxonomy & naming
Haplochromis barbarae was described by the British ichthyologist Peter Humphry Greenwood in 1967, in Part VI of his long-running revision of the Lake Victoria Haplochromis species, published in the Bulletin of the British Museum (Natural History), Zoology series (volume 15, number 2, page 93, figure 18). The holotype (BMNH 1966.2.21.5) and a series of paratypes were collected at a beach near Nasu Point in the Buvuma Channel, off the Ugandan shore of the lake. The species has always been treated as valid; van Oijen and colleagues retained it in their 1991 CLOFFA checklist, and Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes lists it as valid but flags the population as extinct.
The genus name carries a heavy taxonomic caveat. Lake Victoria's roughly five hundred endemic haplochromines were historically lumped into a catch-all 'Haplochromis,' and subsequent workers have split many of them into smaller genera. Haplochromis barbarae is among the species sometimes referred to Astatotilapia, the genus that holds the generalist haplochromines ancestral to much of the radiation. That placement is not universally adopted, and because the fish may no longer exist to be re-examined with modern methods, this atlas keeps the familiar Haplochromis heading while noting the unsettled generic position.
Morphology
Haplochromis barbarae is a small cichlid, reaching about 4 in in standard length — roughly four inches — which is typical for the smaller members of the Victoria flock. The body follows the generalized haplochromine plan: a moderately elongate, laterally compressed shape with a single continuous dorsal fin and the soft anal-fin spots (egg-dummy ocelli) characteristic of the group's males. As with most species of the flock, breeding males would have been the more colourful sex and females and non-breeding fish a more subdued silvery-grey, though detailed live colour notes for this species are sparse because so few specimens were ever seen alive.
Greenwood distinguished it from its many congeners on fine points of dentition, head proportions and squamation rather than on any single dramatic feature — the routine task of separating species within a flock where neighbouring forms can differ only subtly. The species was named not for a feature of the fish but for a person: the scientific illustrator Barbara Williams, whose drawings illustrated this and other of Greenwood's papers.
Habitat
Haplochromis barbarae was endemic to Lake Victoria, the vast, shallow equatorial lake shared by Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania and the centre of one of the most celebrated species radiations in vertebrates. Within the Freshwater Ecoregions of the World scheme it falls in the Lake Victoria Basin ecoregion. The type material came from the Buvuma Channel near Nasu Point, on the lake's northern, Ugandan side.
FishBase, drawing on Greenwood's account, places the species over a hard substrate in shallow, exposed sandy beaches a short distance offshore, near the water-lily zone fringing a papyrus swamp, at depths down to about three metres. Like the rest of the inshore flock it lived in the warm, well-buffered water typical of Lake Victoria — temperatures broadly in the mid-20s Celsius and a pH on the alkaline side of neutral, the lake running roughly pH 7.2 to 9 across its waters. It was, in short, a shallow-water inshore fish of the kind hit hardest by the changes that overtook the lake in the late twentieth century.
Feeding
Haplochromis barbarae was a paedophage — a specialist egg- and larva-eater, one of a guild of Lake Victoria haplochromines that made a living by raiding the broods of other cichlids. The lake's haplochromines are maternal mouthbrooders, the female carrying eggs and young in her buccal cavity; paedophages exploit this by ramming or startling a brooding female so that she spits her clutch, or by directly snatching eggs, then swallowing the spilled brood. The evidence that barbarae fed this way is direct: the guts of the specimens Greenwood examined contained recently fertilized cichlid ova. Later work on paedophagy in the region's Haplochromis explicitly cites barbarae as 'an egg-snatcher from Lake Victoria.' Consistent with a diet of other fishes' eggs and embryos, FishBase estimates a high trophic level near 4.0.
Paedophages illustrate just how finely the Victoria flock partitioned its food supply: alongside algae-scrapers, insect-pickers, snail-crushers, plankton-feeders and piscivores, an entire trophic niche was built around eating the next generation of the flock itself. That dependence on a dense, diverse population of brooding cichlids also made paedophages acutely vulnerable once the flock began to collapse.
Mating
No courtship or pair-formation behaviour was recorded specifically for Haplochromis barbarae, and given its likely extinction none is likely ever to be observed. Its mating system can only be inferred from the flock to which it belonged. Lake Victoria haplochromines are polygynous maternal mouthbrooders in which the male holds no lasting pair bond: a colourful, territorial male displays to passing females, often over a small patch of substrate, and the female chooses among displaying males. Spawning is brief, after which the sexes separate. The egg-dummy spots on the male's anal fin play a role in this system, drawing the female's mouth toward the fin during the spawning sequence so that she takes in milt with the eggs she is gathering. Beyond this general pattern, the specifics of barbarae's social behaviour are unknown.
Breeding
Like all members of the Lake Victoria flock, Haplochromis barbarae was a maternal mouthbrooder: the female took the fertilized eggs into her mouth and brooded them there through hatching and the early free-swimming stage, releasing the fry once they could fend for themselves and taking them back in at the first sign of danger. No clutch counts, brooding durations or fry-development data were published for this species. By the standard of small haplochromines of comparable size, congeners typically carry broods on the order of a few dozen eggs — roughly 20 to 60 — but no figure specific to barbarae exists, so any number is an inference from relatives rather than a measurement of this fish. There is, with grim irony, one certainty about its reproduction: as a paedophage, this species depended on the very mouthbrooding habit it shared, raiding the broods of neighbours to feed itself.
In the aquarium
Haplochromis barbarae has no aquarium history and is not a fish a hobbyist can obtain. It was a poorly known inshore species of Lake Victoria, recorded from few specimens, and it has not been seen since 1985; it is very probably extinct. It was never collected for the trade, never bred in captivity, and there is no husbandry literature on it.
The general point worth making is about its relatives, not the fish itself. A number of surviving Lake Victoria haplochromines — the more robust, generalist 'Astatotilapia' types and several brightly coloured rock-dwellers such as the various Mbipia and Pundamilia forms — are maintained by specialist keepers and conservation-minded aquarists, and a few are managed in zoo and aquarium breeding programmes precisely because their wild populations are imperilled. Such fish do well in hard, alkaline water (pH around 7.5 to 8.5, temperatures of about 23 to 27 degrees Celsius) in groups with a surplus of females to spread male aggression. But paedophages like barbarae would have been difficult subjects even when the lake was intact, since their natural diet was the eggs and larvae of other cichlids. The honest summary is that this is a species known to science only from museum jars and a handful of field records, kept by no one.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Haplochromis barbarae as Critically Endangered (Possibly Extinct), under criterion C2a(ii), in an assessment by Witte, de Zeeuw and Brooks dated 31 March 2010; the population trend is recorded as decreasing. The assessment notes that the species declined from the 1970s onward following the introduction of the Nile perch (Lates niloticus) to Lake Victoria, and that — unlike a number of haplochromines that have shown signs of recovery in recent years — barbarae has not been recorded since 1985. If any individuals survive they are likely to be extremely rare; the species may already be extinct, and Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes flags it as such.
The story is the story of the whole flock. Lake Victoria once held more than five hundred endemic haplochromine cichlids, the largest known assemblage of recently evolved vertebrate species. From the 1980s the combination of the predatory Nile perch — stocked to build a commercial fishery — and rapid eutrophication from a growing human population caused one of the most severe documented vertebrate extinction events of modern times, with an estimated several hundred species lost or driven to the brink. Inshore, shallow-water specialists with narrow diets, such as the paedophages, were among the most exposed. Haplochromis barbarae stands as one named casualty of that collapse.
