Hard, alkaline, well-buffered water of the kind that defines Lake Victoria — stability matters more than chasing a single number.

Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Haplochromis dentex is a slender, big-toothed predatory cichlid endemic to Lake Victoria, one of the lake's many open-water piscivores that hunted smaller haplochromines across mud-floored bays and offshore shoals. The IUCN lists it as Critically Endangered (Possibly Extinct) — it has not been recorded since 1987, a casualty of the Nile perch invasion and eutrophication that gutted the lake's endemic fish flock in the 1980s.

Taxonomy & naming

Haplochromis dentex was described by the British ichthyologist Charles Tate Regan in 1922, in his revision of the cichlid fishes of Lake Victoria published in the Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London. The type locality is the Sesse (Ssese) Islands in the northern Ugandan waters of the lake, and the species is anchored by a single specimen — the unique holotype, BMNH 1909.5.4.1, in the Natural History Museum, London. The original combination is the one still in use, Haplochromis dentex.

The Lake Victoria haplochromine flock is a textbook adaptive radiation of several hundred closely related, mostly endemic species, and ichthyologists have repeatedly tried to carve it into manageable genera. Greenwood's 1979–1980 generic breakup placed the large slender piscivores in the genus (or subgenus) Prognathochromis, and Haplochromis dentex is consistently listed as Prognathochromis (Prognathochromis) dentex, the nominal member of a 'dentex complex' of similar open-water predators that also includes estor, mento and macrognathus. Because the boundaries of these segregate genera remain contested and the radiation is so young that the groups intergrade, most modern checklists — and this atlas — retain the conservative umbrella name Haplochromis for the whole assemblage while noting the Prognathochromis placement. No junior synonyms are recognised.

Morphology

Haplochromis dentex is a slender, fusiform cichlid; FishBase gives a maximum size of about 6.5 in standard length, placing it among the larger of Lake Victoria's haplochromines. The defining feature is the feeding apparatus that gives the fish its name (Latin dentex, 'large-toothed'): the lower jaw projects beyond the upper, the forehead is gently curved with a slight hump where the beak-like premaxillary extension begins, and the mouth is lined with large, recurved teeth. Contemporary descriptions report large unicuspid (single-pointed) teeth set in about three rows in each jaw, with some smaller tricuspid teeth retained in smaller individuals — the shift toward enlarged unicuspids is the classic dental signature of a haplochromine that has specialised on grasping live fish prey.

Live coloration was never reliably documented before the species disappeared, a common and frustrating gap for the many Victoria haplochromines known mainly from preserved museum material. As in related piscivores, breeding males were almost certainly more vividly coloured than the duller females and juveniles, and the genus shows the usual maternal-mouthbrooder dimorphism — males larger and brighter, anal fin bearing egg-spots — but for Haplochromis dentex specifically the precise live pattern and the degree of sexual difference are not on record.

Habitat

Haplochromis dentex was endemic to Lake Victoria, the vast, shallow tropical lake shared by Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania and the largest lake in Africa by area. Within the lake it was a habitat generalist by the standards of its guild: it was taken in sheltered bays with soft mud bottoms, along exposed sandy beaches, over open offshore waters with rock-and-shingle floors, and in a fairly exposed bay with a hard substrate. Recorded depths run down to at least about 25–26 ft, so this was a fish of the well-lit littoral and sublittoral rather than the deep, oxygen-poor lake bottom.

Lake Victoria's surface waters are warm and only weakly mineralised — broadly pH on the order of 7.2 to 9 and temperatures roughly 73–81 °F in the mixed layer — and Haplochromis dentex lived within that envelope. No water chemistry was measured at its specific capture sites; the ranges given here are the general values for the upper layer of the lake it inhabited, and the depth figure is the documented capture range rather than a physiological limit.

Feeding

Haplochromis dentex was a piscivore — a fish-eater — and that single fact explains both its anatomy and its fate. It preyed on small haplochromine cichlids, the abundant currency of the pre-collapse Victoria food web, seizing them with the enlarged unicuspid teeth and the long, projecting lower jaw. FishBase places it at a trophic level around 4.2, near the top of the haplochromine community. Its body plan — slender, with a big mouth set on a pointed head — is the convergent template of the lake's many independent piscivore lineages, of which the dentex complex (dentex, estor, mento, macrognathus) was one tight cluster.

This high-level predatory niche made the species acutely vulnerable. The same role was taken over wholesale by the introduced Nile perch (Lates niloticus), a far larger predator that both out-competed the native piscivores and ate them; and the small haplochromines that Haplochromis dentex depended on for food were themselves collapsing at the same time. A specialist predator loses its prey base and its niche simultaneously.

Mating

No courtship or pair-formation behaviour was recorded for Haplochromis dentex before it vanished, and it is not kept in aquaria, so its social and reproductive behaviour can only be inferred from the broader Lake Victoria haplochromine flock. In that flock the pattern is consistent: these are polygynous maternal mouthbrooders with no lasting pair bond. Males establish and defend a small spawning territory and court passing females with displays that show off body colour and the egg-spot markings on the anal fin; spawning is brief, after which the male's role ends. For Haplochromis dentex specifically the territoriality, display colours and breeding season are simply undocumented — an honest blank for a species that disappeared before its biology could be studied in the field.

Breeding

Haplochromis dentex is, like effectively all Lake Victoria haplochromines, a maternal mouthbrooder: the female takes the fertilised eggs into her mouth and incubates them there, releasing free-swimming fry only after the yolk is absorbed. FishBase records the reproductive mode as 'mouthbrooding by female' and nothing more — clutch size, incubation period and fry development were never measured for this species. As a genus-typical guide, Victoria haplochromines of this body size lay comparatively small clutches, on the order of a few dozen to roughly a hundred relatively large, yolky eggs, a low-fecundity strategy in which heavy maternal investment in each egg substitutes for sheer numbers. Parental care is performed entirely by the brooding female, who shelters the fry in her mouth and continues to take them back in at a threat for a period after they first emerge; the male contributes no care. Specific egg counts and timings for Haplochromis dentex remain unknown.

In the aquarium

Haplochromis dentex is not an aquarium fish. It was never established in the hobby, no captive population is known to exist, and as a species that has not been seen alive since 1987 it is almost certainly beyond keeping. Nothing in the literature documents its husbandry, and this profile makes no attempt to invent any.

The broader context is worth stating plainly, because it is the reason the section is empty. A number of Lake Victoria haplochromines were salvaged into aquarium and zoo breeding programmes during the lake's collapse — captive 'arks' that have kept several otherwise-doomed species alive — but Haplochromis dentex, a large open-water piscivore known from a single museum specimen and never reliably described in life, was not among the lineages rescued. For aquarists drawn to Victorian cichlids, the keepable species are the surviving rock-dwelling and generalist haplochromines maintained by hobbyist conservation networks; a piscivore of this kind would in any case demand a very large tank and a steady supply of live fish, and the point is moot, as none are available.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Haplochromis dentex as Critically Endangered (Possibly Extinct) under criterion C2a(ii), assessed on 31 March 2010 by Witte, de Zeeuw and Brooks and published in 2010. The assessment notes that the species has not been recorded since 1987 despite repeated surveys across its known range; an earlier 1996 assessment had even listed it as Extinct, and ichthyologists Harrison and Stiassny (1999) treated the case as unresolved, cautioning that because parts of the lake remain inadequately surveyed it would be premature to declare any such species definitively gone. The 'Possibly Extinct' tag captures that genuine uncertainty.

Its decline is part of one of the best-documented mass extinctions of modern times. From the 1980s the upper trophic levels of Lake Victoria's endemic haplochromine flock — several hundred species, the great majority found nowhere else — collapsed under the combined pressure of the introduced Nile perch (a voracious predator stocked from the late 1950s onward), accelerating eutrophication and oxygen depletion driven by catchment deforestation and nutrient runoff, and the spread of water hyacinth. Open-water piscivores like Haplochromis dentex, dependent on a now-vanishing supply of smaller haplochromines and directly competing with and preyed upon by the Nile perch, were among the hardest hit. Whether a handful of individuals persist in some unsurveyed corner of this enormous lake is unknown; on current evidence the species is, at best, hanging on at the very edge of existence.
