Taxonomy & naming
Haplochromis hiatus was described in 1981 by the Dutch ichthyologists Rob J.C. Hoogerhoud and Frans Witte, in a revision of the so-called 'Haplochromis' empodisma group published in the Netherlands Journal of Zoology (volume 31, pages 232–273, plate 1) — part of the long-running Leiden programme to describe the haplochromine cichlids of Lake Victoria. The fish belongs to the East African haplochromine flock, an explosive radiation of several hundred closely related, mostly endemic mouthbrooders that fills the modern, geologically young waters of Lake Victoria. The genus name Haplochromis has long served as a catch-all ("wastebasket") for these Victoria-basin species; many have since been reshuffled into segregate genera (Labrochromis, Mbipia, Yssichromis, Lipochromis and others), but Haplochromis hiatus continues to be carried under Haplochromis and is treated here under that heading, as in FishBase, the Catalog of Fishes and CLOFFA. The specific epithet — Latin for a gap, opening or cleft — was chosen by the describers to signal that the species 'bridges the taxonomic gap' between Haplochromis empodisma and Haplochromis obtusidens in the shape of its pharyngeal (throat) jaws, the very anatomy on which much haplochromine classification turns. The type material was collected in the Mwanza Gulf at the southern end of the lake.
Morphology
Haplochromis hiatus is a small cichlid, reaching about 4.5 in in standard length (FishBase, from the CLOFFA checklist) — a typical size for a Lake Victoria haplochromine, most of which fall between roughly 8 and 5.5 in. No photograph of a living fish is in general circulation; the species is known almost entirely from preserved museum material, and FishBase carries only the generic family drawing. In overall form it shares the deep-bodied, laterally compressed, large-eyed build of the empodisma group, with the moderately sloping head and protractile jaws characteristic of benthic-feeding haplochromines. Its diagnostic feature, and the source of its name, lies internally: the lower pharyngeal jaw and its tooth pattern are intermediate between the slender, fine-toothed condition of insectivorous relatives and the more robust, molarised condition of mollusc-crushers, placing it 'in the gap' between Haplochromis empodisma and Haplochromis obtusidens. As in essentially all members of the flock, the species would have shown strong sexual dichromatism — brightly coloured, often nuptially flushed breeding males versus drab, silvery-grey females — though the specific live nuptial colours of Haplochromis hiatus were never documented and are now effectively lost.
Habitat
The species is endemic to Lake Victoria, the largest tropical lake in the world, shared by Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya; the described material comes from the Mwanza Gulf, a relatively sheltered arm at the lake's southern (Tanzanian) shore that was the focus of the Dutch Haplochromis Ecology Survey Team (HEST). FishBase records it from shallow areas with a soft mud bottom, at depths down to about 30 ft — a sublittoral, soft-sediment fish rather than a rock-dweller. Lake Victoria is a warm, well-mineralised tropical lake: surface waters typically run about 73–81 °F, with a hard, alkaline chemistry and pH generally in the range of roughly 7.2 to 9.0, quite unlike the soft acid blackwaters of the Amazon. The mud-floored gulfs and bays it occupied are also the parts of the lake that suffered most severely from eutrophication and deoxygenation during the late-twentieth-century ecological upheaval, so its preferred habitat has itself been degraded.
Feeding
Haplochromis hiatus is a benthic feeder that works the mud bottom for small prey. The Leiden trophic classifications place it among the insectivores, but with a partly molluscivorous component — consistent with its 'in-between' pharyngeal jaws, which are robust enough to deal with small snails yet not the heavy crushing mill of a dedicated mollusc specialist. Ecological work on the Haplochromis assemblage of the Mwanza Gulf found that Haplochromis hiatus, together with the closely allied Haplochromis iris, are benthic insectivores whose diets shift seasonally, taking different prey in the dry season than in the wet — a flexibility that let many of these small cichlids partition a crowded bottom-feeding guild. FishBase estimates its trophic level at about 3.2, the value expected of a small invertebrate predator. In the intact pre-collapse lake, fishes like Haplochromis hiatus formed part of the dense haplochromine biomass that channelled benthic insect larvae, snails and detritus up the food web.
Mating
No courtship or social behaviour was recorded specifically for Haplochromis hiatus, so what can be said is drawn from the well-studied biology of the flock to which it belongs. Lake Victoria haplochromines are polygynous maternal mouthbrooders: males establish and defend small territories or display sites where they court passing females with quivering and lateral displays, and females visit only to spawn. A central element of haplochromine courtship is the 'egg-dummy' — conspicuous ocellated spots on the male's anal fin that mimic eggs; as the female snaps at them during spawning she draws milt into her mouth, fertilising the clutch she is already carrying. Mate choice in these fishes is strongly visual and keyed to male nuptial colour, which is one reason the turbidity that overtook the lake was so damaging. For Haplochromis hiatus specifically, those colours were never described.
Breeding
FishBase records the reproductive mode plainly: mouthbrooding by females. Like the rest of the Lake Victoria flock, Haplochromis hiatus is a maternal mouthbrooder — the female takes the fertilised eggs into her mouth and broods them there through hatching and the early free-swimming stage, releasing fry only when they can fend for themselves and gathering them back in at danger. No clutch count was published for this species; small Victoria haplochromines of its size typically carry only modest broods, on the order of a few dozen eggs (roughly 20–60), the small clutch being the trade-off for the safety of oral incubation. There is no parental role for the male beyond fertilisation, and no nest or substrate is prepared — the brood is sheltered entirely within the female's buccal cavity. Because the species was never kept or bred in captivity, the timing of spawning, egg size and brooding duration are unknown for Haplochromis hiatus and are inferred from its many studied relatives.
In the aquarium
Haplochromis hiatus is not an aquarium fish. It was described from museum specimens, has no settled common name, and is not recorded in the hobby or the ornamental trade; given that it is now considered Possibly Extinct, it is almost certainly not in any aquarium today. This stands in contrast to a handful of Lake Victoria haplochromines — such as the 'pitch-black fulu' Haplochromis piceatus and various 'Victoria reds' — that conservation-minded aquarists and public aquariums have maintained as captive-breeding insurance populations. Were a fish of this type kept, the general recipe for Victorian haplochromines would apply: hard, alkaline water (pH about 7.5–8.5) at roughly 75–81 °F, a soft sandy or fine substrate matching its mud-bottom habits, robust filtration, and a colony structure of one male to several females in a tank large enough to diffuse male aggression. But for Haplochromis hiatus this is academic — there is no stock to keep, and no husbandry record exists.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Haplochromis hiatus as Critically Endangered under criterion C2a(ii) (assessed 31 March 2010 by Witte, de Zeeuw and Brooks; population trend decreasing), and the assessment explicitly notes that the species is now Possibly Extinct. It is a textbook casualty of the Lake Victoria catastrophe of the late twentieth century. From the 1980s the introduced Nile perch (Lates niloticus) — a large predator stocked to build a commercial fishery — erupted across the lake and, in concert with intensifying eutrophication, rising turbidity and bottom-water deoxygenation, drove one of the most severe vertebrate mass-extinction events of modern times: an estimated 200 or more of Lake Victoria's endemic haplochromine cichlids vanished or collapsed within a couple of decades. Small, soft-bottom, gulf-dwelling specialists like Haplochromis hiatus were among the most exposed, losing both their habitat and their predator refuge at once. It carries no CITES or CMS listing. While some haplochromine populations have partially rebounded as the Nile perch fishery matured, Haplochromis hiatus has not been reliably recorded in the surveys that recovered other species, and the realistic outlook is that it is already gone.
