Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Haplochromis laparogramma is a small, slender, silvery zooplankton-feeding cichlid endemic to Lake Victoria, one of the open-water haplochromines hit hardest by the Nile perch upsurge of the 1980s. It is assessed by the IUCN as Least Concern (2010), and is one of the rare success stories of the flock: after nearly vanishing it staged a documented resurgence in the changed lake, today reaching densities higher than before the collapse.

Taxonomy & naming

Haplochromis laparogramma was described in 1969 by the British ichthyologist Peter Humphry Greenwood, the foremost authority on the Lake Victoria cichlid flock, together with J.M. Gee, in part VII of Greenwood's monumental 'A revision of the Lake Victoria Haplochromis species' (Bulletin of the British Museum (Natural History), Zoology, vol. 18). The holotype (BMNH 1968.8.30.220) and a series of paratypes are held in the Natural History Museum, London; the type locality is offshore water north of Nsadzi Island in the Ugandan part of Lake Victoria. The name has never fallen into synonymy and remains valid as originally combined. The species sits in the tribe Haplochromini within the subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae. Like the great majority of the Victoria flock it was placed in the catch-all genus Haplochromis, and that is the name under which it is still most commonly catalogued (FishBase, Catalog of Fishes). Much of the modern literature, however, refers it to the genus Yssichromis — writing it Haplochromis (Yssichromis) laparogramma or Yssichromis laparogramma — a group erected for the lake's slender, large-eyed open-water zooplanktivores. Researchers also speak informally of 'the Haplochromis laparogramma group,' a cluster of closely similar silvery zooplankton-feeders that includes Haplochromis pyrrhocephalus, Haplochromis heusinkveldi, Haplochromis argens and others; these fishes are notoriously hard to tell apart and were long confused. We keep the conservative Haplochromis heading here while noting that Yssichromis is the genus most workers now use.

Morphology

This is a small cichlid, reaching about 3.5 in in standard length, with the slim, streamlined, somewhat compressed body typical of a fish that hangs in open water rather than working a substrate. The eye is large and the mouth terminal — the build of a visual midwater predator. Both sexes are basically silvery, a countershaded, almost herring-like coloration that suits a pelagic life, and a distinctive feature in this group is the conspicuously ivory-white lips. The flank carries three to five generally faint vertical bars, and a faint trace of a dark mid-lateral band is sometimes present (the epithet laparogramma — 'flank line' — refers to such a stripe). Breeding males develop a yellow-to-greenish sheen over the flanks and bear the orange or yellow egg-spots (ocelli) on the anal fin that are universal among haplochromines. The oral jaws are set with slender, mostly two-pointed (bicuspid) teeth, and the dentigerous arm of the premaxilla is densely toothed almost to its rear end — fine, gripping dentition for seizing small soft prey rather than crushing or scraping. Members of the laparogramma group are so similar in shape and colour that they are separated mainly on subtle differences in tooth form, snout and mouth proportions, and male nuptial colour; even specialists relied on these fine characters, and the group's taxonomy has been repeatedly revised.

Habitat

Haplochromis laparogramma is endemic to Lake Victoria, the vast, shallow equatorial lake shared by Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya, and is recorded from all three national waters (the type series from off Nsadzi Island, Uganda; museum material from Kiumba Beach, Kenya; and the long-running Dutch survey work in the Mwanza Gulf, Tanzania). It is a benthopelagic, open-water fish of relatively exposed offshore areas over sand and mud bottoms, where it occurs across a depth range of roughly 5 to 35 metres (FishBase, from the CLOFFA check-list). Within the laparogramma group, fishes of this type concentrate in the upper few metres of the water column by day, the highest densities often only two to three metres below the surface, but they are also taken in bottom trawls over open sediment and near rocks. Lake Victoria is warm, fairly alkaline freshwater; surface temperatures across the lake run roughly in the mid-20s Celsius and pH is typically circumneutral to distinctly alkaline (about 7.2 to 9.0). The lake's history is central to this species' story: from the 1980s the spread of the introduced Nile perch, heavy eutrophication, declining water clarity and falling dissolved oxygen in deeper water reorganised the whole offshore environment, and the zooplanktivores that live there were among the most affected.

Feeding

As its placement in the Yssichromis group implies, Haplochromis laparogramma is fundamentally a zooplanktivore — a fish that picks small drifting crustaceans (copepods, cladocerans) and other tiny invertebrates from open water, the slender body, large eye and fine bicuspid teeth all fitting that role. FishBase, drawing on the older record, also lists midge (Diptera, chironomid) larvae and pupae among its food, and gives a trophic level near 3.3. This dietary flexibility turned out to matter. After the Nile perch upsurge and the associated environmental changes, the surviving and resurgent zooplanktivores of the laparogramma group broadened their diets: post-recovery gut studies in the Mwanza Gulf report that the fish now take not only zooplankton but also midge larvae, insects, and at times shrimp and other larger prey. This behavioural versatility — the capacity of a 'specialist' zooplanktivore to switch toward larger or benthic prey when conditions change — is a recurring theme in Lake Victoria haplochromine biology and is widely credited as part of why some of these species rebounded while others did not. In the offshore community the fish functions as a link between the plankton and larger predators, including the Nile perch itself.

Mating

No detailed courtship study of Haplochromis laparogramma itself appears to have been published, so its reproductive behaviour is read from the well-documented pattern of the Lake Victoria haplochromine flock to which it belongs. These are polygynous maternal mouthbrooders with no lasting pair bond. Ripe males adopt their brighter nuptial dress — in this species a yellow-green flank sheen and the anal-fin egg-spots — and display to passing females, the male typically quivering and presenting the flank and anal fin. There is no excavated nest or defended brood territory in the substrate-spawning sense; spawning is brief, the female does all the parental work, and the sexes part immediately afterwards. The anal-fin ocelli are central to the haplochromine spawning mechanism: as the female collects the just-laid eggs into her mouth she snaps at these egg-like spots on the displaying male, and milt released at that moment fertilises the clutch already inside her buccal cavity. Mate choice in this flock is strongly visual and keyed to male colour, which is one reason the increased turbidity of the modern lake — which blurs those colour signals — is thought to have eroded the reproductive isolation between closely similar species like those of the laparogramma group.

Breeding

Haplochromis laparogramma is a maternal mouthbrooder, as FishBase records ('mouthbrooding by females') and as is universal in the Lake Victoria flock. The female alone incubates the fertilised eggs in her mouth, holding the developing embryos and then the free-swimming fry through a brooding period of roughly two to three weeks before releasing them; she may continue to shelter the young in her mouth at the first sign of danger for a short time after that. No clutch count specific to this species has been published, but it is a small fish and Lake Victoria haplochromines of this size are typically modest, low-fecundity brooders — clutches on the order of a few dozen comparatively large, yolk-rich eggs are genus-typical (this figure is a flock-wide estimate, not a measured count for laparogramma). The trade-off is classic mouthbrooder economics: few eggs, but each fry is large and well-developed at release, and is guarded inside the mother's mouth through its most vulnerable phase. FishBase rates the species' resilience as high, with a minimum population doubling time under fifteen months — consistent with the rapid rebound it showed once predation pressure eased. Spawning is presumed to be year-round or only weakly seasonal, as in most equatorial haplochromines.

In the aquarium

Haplochromis laparogramma is essentially never kept as an aquarium fish, and there is no established body of hobbyist husbandry for it. It is a small, plain, silvery open-water cichlid of no particular ornamental appeal, it is not bred for or traded in the ornamental industry, and it belongs to a group of look-alike species that even specialists struggle to identify — all of which keep it out of the hobby. The handful of Lake Victoria haplochromines that ARE maintained by aquarists (mostly the brightly coloured rock-dwelling 'Victoria cichlids' kept in conservation-minded clubs) give a sense of what this species would need if anyone did keep it: hard, alkaline water (pH well above 7, into the high 7s or 8s) at roughly 24 to 27 Celsius, clean and well-oxygenated, in a group rather than a pair so that the maternal mouthbrooding system can play out. As an open-water schooling zooplanktivore rather than a territorial rock-dweller, it would call for a long tank with plenty of midwater swimming room and a steady supply of small live or frozen foods (Cyclops, Daphnia, Artemia, fine midge larvae). None of this is documented practice — it is extrapolation. For the foreseeable future this is a fish of research trawls and museum jars, not of home aquaria, and the honest statement is simply that it is not an aquarium species.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Haplochromis laparogramma as Least Concern (assessed 31 March 2010 by Witte, de Zeeuw and Brooks), with a population trend recorded as increasing — an unusual and encouraging entry for a Lake Victoria haplochromine. That status reflects a genuine recovery. Through the 1980s the introduction and explosive increase of the Nile perch (Lates niloticus), together with eutrophication and loss of water clarity, drove a catastrophic decline of the lake's endemic cichlid flock; the open-water zooplanktivores of the laparogramma group were hit especially hard, and at one point this species was feared possibly extinct (an older species profile from before the recovery still describes it that way). From the mid- to late 1990s, however, as Nile perch stocks were drawn down by an intensive fishery, several zooplanktivores resurged, and by the 2000s the zooplanktivorous haplochromines had become the dominant trophic group offshore — more abundant than before the collapse. Haplochromis laparogramma is documented as one of these winners: in the Mwanza Gulf its abundance is now reported to be higher than it was before the early-1980s crash. The recovery was accompanied by measurable change — a diet broadened beyond pure zooplankton, and concern that increased turbidity is relaxing the colour-based mate choice that keeps these similar species distinct, potentially leading to hybridisation. So while this particular species is, for now, secure and even thriving, the broader Lake Victoria flock remains one of the most heavily impacted vertebrate assemblages on Earth, and the lake continues to face eutrophication, fishing pressure, and the spread of invasive plants and fishes.
