Taxonomy & naming
Haplochromis macrognathus was described by the British ichthyologist Charles Tate Regan in 1922 in his account 'The cichlid fishes of Lake Victoria' (Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London), one of dozens of haplochromine species he named from the lake in that single monograph. The type material came from Lake Victoria itself, the only water body the species is known from. It belongs to the vast Lake Victoria haplochromine 'species flock,' the textbook example of explosive adaptive radiation in which several hundred closely related cichlids evolved from a recent common ancestor. When P. Humphry Greenwood carried out his sweeping generic revision of these fishes (1979-1980), splitting the unwieldy genus Haplochromis into more than twenty smaller genera and subgenera based on trophic and anatomical specialization, he transferred macrognathus to his new genus Prognathochromis (subgenus Prognathochromis) — the long-jawed open-water and benthic piscivores — placing it within the Prognathochromis dentex species complex. That generic scheme remains contentious: many ichthyologists, FishBase and the Catalog of Fishes among them, continue to treat the entire flock under the inclusive genus Haplochromis, regarding Prognathochromis as a synonym or at most a subgenus. This atlas keeps the conservative Haplochromis heading while noting the Prognathochromis placement. The epithet macrognathus — 'large jaw' — refers to the species' strongly projecting lower jaw.
Morphology
Haplochromis macrognathus is a moderately large haplochromine, reaching about 7 in in standard length — sizeable for a Victorian cichlid and consistent with its predatory habits. The body is elongate in the manner of the lake's piscivores rather than deep and disc-shaped. Its defining feature is the jaw structure that gives the fish its name: the lower jaw projects beyond the upper, and the cranial (head) profile is essentially straight, broken by a slight hump at the premaxilla. The dentition shifts with age in a way diagnostic of the dentex group. In juveniles and small fish the outer teeth are unicuspid mixed with weakly bicuspid teeth; in adults over about 4 in the outer-row teeth become strong, curved and uniformly unicuspid — recurved fangs suited to seizing other fish. The inner tooth rows number three to six in the upper jaw and one to three in the lower, a mixture of unicuspid and tricuspid forms. Live coloration is poorly documented, as is true of most extinct Victorian haplochromines known mainly from preserved museum specimens; like related species the sexes would have differed in nuptial colour, with breeding males more strongly pigmented than the cryptic, silvery females. Documented sexual dimorphism beyond this typical haplochromine pattern is not recorded.
Habitat
The species was endemic to Lake Victoria, the largest of the African Great Lakes, spanning the borders of Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania. Records cluster in the lake's northern and eastern waters: along the Ugandan coastline at Bunjako, Jinja, Fielding Bay, Ekunu Bay, Pilkington Bay and the Buvuma Channel; at Port Southby and similar sites in Kenyan waters; and at Majita Beach in Tanzania. It occupied a range of inshore habitats — sheltered gulfs with hard or muddy bottoms as well as exposed sandy beaches — but showed an affinity for firm substrates. It was a shallow-water fish, recorded at depths no greater than about 26 ft. Lake Victoria's open inshore waters are warm and alkaline; basin-wide the lake runs roughly pH 7.2-9.0 and around 73–81 °F at the surface, the broad envelope these inshore haplochromines lived within. The lake forms part of the Lake Victoria Basin freshwater ecoregion, which also takes in Lakes Edward, George, Kyoga and Kivu and is renowned for its lacustrine cichlid radiation.
Feeding
Haplochromis macrognathus was a piscivore — a fish-eater — and its anatomy reflects that guild squarely. The projecting lower jaw, large mouth and recurved unicuspid teeth of adults are the toolkit of a predator that grasped and swallowed other fish, principally the smaller and more abundant haplochromine cichlids that swarmed the lake's inshore zone. FishBase places it at a high trophic level (around 4.2), and gut examinations of preserved specimens confirmed smaller haplochromines as the staple prey, though at least one specimen unexpectedly contained blue-green algae in its intestinal tract — an aberration rather than evidence of habitual herbivory. Within the dense, tightly partitioned Victorian community, macrognathus was one of many specialized predators that fed on the lake's enormous standing crop of small zooplanktivorous and detritivorous haplochromines, the engine of the flock's food web. That very dependence on a haplochromine prey base proved its undoing once that prey base collapsed.
Mating
Like the entire Lake Victoria haplochromine flock, Haplochromis macrognathus was a maternal mouthbrooder, and its reproductive biology can be inferred from the well-studied general pattern of the group rather than from species-specific field study, which was never carried out before its disappearance. In these cichlids the sexes lead largely separate lives outside spawning; males develop bright nuptial colours and display to females over a chosen patch of substrate, often performing the lateral quivering and 'leading' movements typical of haplochromine courtship. Females, drab and cryptic by comparison, visit displaying males to spawn. Pairing is brief and promiscuous — there is no lasting pair bond and no biparental territory — and the male's role ends once eggs are fertilized. The intense sexual selection on male colour and the fine-grained mate choice this implies are widely thought to be a key driver of the flock's explosive speciation.
Breeding
No dedicated breeding study of Haplochromis macrognathus was ever published, so its reproduction is described from the consistent haplochromine pattern documented across Lake Victoria. It was a female mouthbrooder: after the eggs were laid and fertilized on the substrate, the female took them into her mouth and brooded the developing clutch for roughly three weeks, the eggs and then the yolk-sac larvae held and oxygenated in her buccal cavity while she fed little or not at all. Clutch sizes in Victorian haplochromines of this body size are modest — typically on the order of a few dozen to perhaps a hundred large, yolk-rich eggs (genus-typical figure; no count specific to macrognathus exists). Released fry are large and well developed, and the female may briefly continue to shelter them in her mouth when threatened before parental care ends. This low-fecundity, high-investment strategy yields few but advanced young — efficient under stable conditions, but offering little buffer against a novel predator that consumes brooding adults and juveniles alike.
In the aquarium
Haplochromis macrognathus is not an aquarium fish in any practical sense. It is Critically Endangered and very likely extinct, with no known wild population and no record of it ever being maintained or bred in captivity. Unlike a handful of the so-called 'survivor' Victorian haplochromines — small, colourful rock- and algae-associated species that aquarists rescued into conservation-oriented breeding programmes as the lake collapsed — this large, specialized open-water piscivore was never part of the ornamental trade and appears to have been lost before any captive population could be established. Anyone keeping Lake Victoria haplochromines today is working with those surviving lineages, not with macrognathus. Were a fish of its biology ever to be kept, it would demand a very large tank, hard alkaline water around pH 7.5-8.5 and 75–81 °F, and a diet of whole fish or substantial meaty foods to match its piscivorous habit — but this is hypothetical husbandry; the species is functionally gone. The honest entry here is that it cannot be obtained or kept.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Haplochromis macrognathus as Critically Endangered (criterion C2a(ii)), assessed on 31 March 2010 by F. Witte, M.P. de Zeeuw and E. Brooks, with a decreasing population trend; the species is widely flagged as 'possibly extinct.' It was present in Lake Victoria until about 1982, with the earliest suggestions of its extinction following in the mid-1990s. The overwhelming driver was the introduction of the Nile perch (Lates niloticus), a giant predatory fish stocked into Lake Victoria that, from the 1980s, triggered one of the most catastrophic vertebrate extinction events of modern times — an estimated 200 or more endemic haplochromine species vanished or were driven to the brink. As a haplochromine-eating piscivore, macrognathus was hit twice over: directly preyed upon by Nile perch and starved as its own haplochromine prey base was devoured. Secondary pressures compounded the collapse, including eutrophication and loss of water clarity (which erodes the colour-based mate recognition that keeps closely related species distinct, promoting hybridization) and incidental capture in the lake's fisheries. Harrison and Stiassny (1999) cautioned that, because parts of the lake remain inadequately surveyed and 'absence' had at that point been recorded for only a few years, declaring the species definitively extinct would be premature — hence its retention on the Red List as Critically Endangered rather than Extinct. It carries no CITES listing.
