Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Haplochromis mbipi is a small rock-dwelling cichlid endemic to the rocky shores of south-eastern Lake Victoria, one of the East African 'mbipi' — the local name for the lake's flock of stone-loving haplochromines. A maternal mouthbrooder that grazes algae and small invertebrates off submerged boulders, it is currently assessed by the IUCN as Least Concern, but like all of Lake Victoria's colour-based cichlids it is quietly threatened by the rising turbidity that erodes the visual mate choice keeping the species distinct.

Taxonomy & naming

Haplochromis mbipi was described in 1998 by Ole Seehausen, Erwin Lippitsch and Niels Bouton, in the monograph 'Mbipi, the rock-dwelling cichlids of Lake Victoria: description of three new genera and fifteen new species' (Seehausen, Lippitsch, Bouton & Zwennes, Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters 9(2):129–228). In that work the authors erected the new genus Mbipia for it and named the species Mbipia mbipi, making it the type species of the genus — the epithet simply repeats the genus name in apposition. The holotype (RMNH 33271, in the Naturalis collection at Leiden) and a long series of paratypes were collected at Makobe Island in the Speke Gulf, Lake Victoria, Tanzania, from a depth of one to two metres. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats the species as valid under the name Mbipia mbipi. The generic placement, however, remains genuinely unsettled: Lake Victoria's haplochromines are a famously young and shallowly differentiated 'superflock', and the many segregate genera carved out of the old catch-all Haplochromis (Mbipia, Neochromis, Pundamilia, Paralabidochromis and others) are not universally accepted. FishBase and several other databases therefore continue to list the fish as Haplochromis mbipi, and we keep the familiar Haplochromis heading here while noting that the modern name in the primary literature is Mbipia mbipi. Within the rock-cichlid assemblage Mbipia groups with the other algae-and-insect grazers of the boulder zone, and it is closely allied to its only described congener, Mbipia lutea.

Morphology

This is a small cichlid, reaching about 5 in in standard length, with a fusiform, fairly deep haplochromine body. Meristic counts from the original description run to 15–16 dorsal-fin spines with 8–10 soft rays, 3 anal spines with 7–9 soft rays, and 29–30 vertebrae. As in essentially all Lake Victoria haplochromines the species is strongly sexually dichromatic, and this colour difference is the heart of both its identity and its vulnerability. Territorial, sexually active males take on the dark, brooding coloration that gives the whole 'mbipi' group its name — the Kisukuma word means 'the dark ones' — while females and non-territorial males are a far plainer, cryptic grey-brown. Males carry the genus's characteristic anal-fin markings; in this species the egg-dummy ocelli are often reduced to small yellow spots rather than the bold ringed 'eggspots' seen in some relatives. Females, subadults and quiescent males are difficult to tell apart in the field from other rock-dwelling haplochromines, and reliable identification leans on the combination of locality, dentition and the breeding males' colours. The drab, near-identical female plumage across many sympatric mbipi species is precisely why the bright, species-specific male colours do so much taxonomic work in this flock.

Habitat

Haplochromis mbipi is endemic to Lake Victoria and is known from most of the south-eastern part of the lake, in Tanzanian waters; the type series came from Makobe Island in the Speke Gulf. It is a strict rock-dweller, one of the 'mbipi' that live over and among the submerged boulders rather than out over the open sand or in the pelagic zone. FishBase records it from various stony and rocky habitats, including stone-and-sand mixed substrates, and notes that it is most abundant along gently sloping shores strewn with small and medium-sized rock boulders. It is a shallow-water fish: the depth range is given as roughly 0 to 6 metres, with the holotype taken at 3–7 ft. Lake Victoria is a large, shallow, equatorial lake, and its surface waters are warm and alkaline; published values for the inshore environment this species occupies sit at roughly 73–81 °F and a pH around 7.2–9.0, typical of the lake's well-buffered, mineral-rich water. The single most important physical variable for Haplochromis mbipi, though, is not temperature or pH but water clarity — the visual environment over the rocks, which has deteriorated markedly across the lake in recent decades.

Feeding

Haplochromis mbipi is an epilithic grazer-omnivore, working the algal and invertebrate film that coats the rocks. FishBase, drawing on the original description, lists a varied diet of diatoms, filamentous epilithic algae, detritus, insect larvae and Bryozoa (the encrusting 'moss animals' that grow on hard surfaces), and FishBase's modelling places it at a low trophic level of about 2.6. In practice this is a fish that scrapes and picks at the rock surface, taking attached algae together with the small animals living in it rather than specialising tightly on either plant or animal food — a generalist of the boulder biofilm. Females, non-territorial males and subadults are gregarious and forage in loose groups over the rocks, a sociable feeding habit that contrasts sharply with the solitary territoriality of breeding males. Among the rock cichlids of the lake this grazing guild fared comparatively well through the upheavals of the late twentieth century: unlike the open-water zooplanktivores and the larger piscivores, the rock-dwellers' habitat and food were less directly stripped away by the Nile perch invasion and the lake's deoxygenation.

Mating

Reproduction in Haplochromis mbipi is organised around small male-held territories on the rocks. A sexually active male defends a patch usually less than a square metre in area, centred on a larger crevice; he leaves the crevice during courtship and during the frequent skirmishes with rival males, but does not stray far from it, and he drives off conspecific males vigorously. When a ripe female approaches, the male leads her to the crevice, where spawning takes place. The system is polygynous — a single territorial male will spawn with several females in succession — and the dark nuptial coloration of the male is the principal signal a female uses to choose a mate of her own species. This is the crux of how the Lake Victoria flock stays diverse: closely related, fully inter-fertile species coexist on the same reef and remain distinct almost entirely because females prefer to mate with males showing the 'right' colour pattern. That reproductive barrier is behavioural and visual, not genetic, which is exactly what makes it fragile when the water clouds over.

Breeding

Like all Lake Victoria haplochromines, Haplochromis mbipi is a maternal mouthbrooder with no paternal care. After the female spawns in the male's crevice she takes the fertilised eggs into her mouth and incubates them there; she then defends a small territory of her own around a little cave at variable depth while she broods. Specific egg counts for this species are not published in the sources consulted, but mouthbrooding haplochromines of this size in the lake typically carry only small clutches — on the order of a few dozen relatively large eggs — a low fecundity offset by the protection of oral incubation. FishBase reports that in aquaria females release their fry after about 21 days but continue to take them back into the mouth when danger threatens and at night for up to a further 21 days, so effective maternal care extends well beyond the initial brooding period. Length at first maturity is estimated at around 2.5 in. The trade-off of mouthbrooding — few, well-guarded young rather than many abandoned ones — is the standard reproductive strategy that underpins the explosive speciation of these cichlids.

In the aquarium

Haplochromis mbipi is essentially not an aquarium fish in any ordinary sense. It is a small, scientifically important Lake Victoria endemic with no common name and no established presence in the ornamental trade; it is not bred or sold for hobbyists the way the lake's better-known 'Victorian haps' (such as Pundamilia nyererei or various Astatotilapia) are. Any specimens in captivity are overwhelmingly in research collections and conservation-oriented programmes rather than home tanks.

Where it has been kept — chiefly by the research groups that study Lake Victoria mate choice — its needs are those of a rock-dwelling Victorian haplochromine generally. That means hard, alkaline water (pH on the alkaline side of neutral, moderate to high hardness) at a warm 75–81 °F; a tank aquascaped with piled rock to provide the crevices territorial males demand; and enough length and broken sight-lines that subordinate fish and brooding females can escape a dominant male, who will hold and defend his patch aggressively. As a maternal mouthbrooder the species is straightforward to spawn under the right social conditions, and a varied diet built around algae- and spirulina-based foods plus small invertebrates suits its biofilm-grazing habits.

The honest summary, though, is that this is a fish to read about rather than to keep: it is rarely available, carries real conservation significance, and is best left to the institutions working to safeguard Lake Victoria's cichlid diversity.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Haplochromis mbipi as Least Concern, in an assessment dated 1 April 2010 (published 2016) by F. Witte, M.P. de Zeeuw and E. Brooks; the population trend is listed as stable and the species' only recorded range is Tanzania. The assessors nonetheless flag two specific pressures: hybridisation driven by decreased water transparency, and incidental capture as bait for the long-line fishery. The first of these is the defining threat to the whole 'mbipi' assemblage. Because species in this flock are kept apart almost entirely by females choosing mates on colour, the eutrophication-driven turbidity now clouding much of Lake Victoria — the product of catchment deforestation, nutrient runoff and the lake's altered ecology since the Nile perch boom — degrades the very signal that maintains the species boundary. As Seehausen and colleagues famously documented, where the water has turned murky, formerly distinct colour species interbreed and collapse together, so that turbidity can erase biodiversity without killing a single fish. The rock-dwellers as a group survived the twentieth-century catastrophe that drove many open-water and predatory Victoria haplochromines to extinction or near-extinction better than most, which is reflected in this species' Least Concern listing; but its long-term security rests less on its own abundance than on whether the lake's water can be kept clear enough for its mate-choice system to keep working.
