Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Taxonomy & naming

Haplochromis mento was described by the British ichthyologist Charles Tate Regan in 1922, in his landmark monograph on the cichlid fishes of Lake Victoria published in the Annals and Magazine of Natural History (series 13, volume 8). Regan placed it in the catch-all genus Haplochromis, where the great majority of Lake Victoria's endemic cichlids — the so-called 'furu' species flock — were and largely still are housed. The name has remained a valid species since, though its generic placement has been contested. When Peter Humphry Greenwood undertook his sweeping revision of the Lake Victoria haplochromines (1979–1980), he split the unwieldy genus Haplochromis into a series of smaller genera defined by feeding morphology, and assigned the large-toothed open-water piscivores — mento among them — to the genus Prognathochromis. The combination Prognathochromis mento (Regan, 1922) is therefore widely used in the primary literature. Greenwood's split is not universally accepted: many workers, and databases such as FishBase and the Catalog of Fishes, retain these fishes in a broadly defined Haplochromis pending a molecular consensus, treating Prognathochromis (and the parallel genus Harpagochromis for other piscivores) as a synonym or subgenus. We follow that convention and keep the species under Haplochromis, while noting the Prognathochromis assignment that anchors most of the ecological work. The species is endemic to Lake Victoria; the piscivorous haplochromines of the lake were given a full systematic revision by van Oijen (1991).

Morphology

Haplochromis mento is a comparatively large haplochromine, reaching about 7 in in standard length. Its build is that of a pursuit predator: an elongate, relatively shallow and streamlined body, a pointed head, and large, strong oral teeth set in jaws adapted for seizing and holding other fish. This combination of a slender body and prominent dentition is the signature of the open-water piscivorous haplochromines, and workers studying the parallel Lake Edward radiation explicitly note mento as 'a pelagic species with a shallow body and large oral teeth' that presumably pursues and captures fast-swimming prey. Like other members of the flock it shows the haplochromine ground plan of a single pair of nostrils, a divided lateral line, and (in males) egg-spots on the anal fin used in spawning. Coloration follows the haplochromine pattern in which breeding males are brightly and distinctively pigmented while females and non-breeding fish are a more cryptic silvery to brownish grey; precise live colours for this species are poorly documented in the modern literature. Sexual dimorphism is present, as it is throughout the flock: males are the brighter, more strongly marked sex and develop the conspicuous anal-fin egg-spots, while females remain drab — a difference tied directly to the maternal mouthbrooding mating system.

Habitat

The species is endemic to Lake Victoria, the vast, shallow East African lake shared by Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya and drained ultimately to the Nile. FishBase records it as a benthopelagic fish of littoral areas with sand, or sand-and-rock, substrates, occurring down to about 20 ft depth; most of the recorded localities are wave-exposed shorelines, though at least one is a sheltered gulf. Lake Victoria is a warm, well-mixed equatorial water body: surface temperatures typically run from the low-to-mid 20s up to roughly 81 °F, and the open water is moderately alkaline, with pH generally in the range of about 7.2 to 9.0 and hardness modest. Historically the lake was far clearer than it is today; the eutrophication and turbidity of recent decades have transformed the underwater light environment that visually hunting, brightly coloured haplochromines like mento evolved in, with consequences discussed under Conservation.

Feeding

Haplochromis mento is a piscivore — a fish-eater — and sits high in the lake's food web; FishBase places it at a trophic level of about 4.2, among the highest of any cichlid. Direct evidence comes from gut analysis: the stomachs of examined specimens contained the remains of cyprinid and cichlid fishes, confirming that it preys on other fish rather than on invertebrates or plant material. Its morphology matches this diet, with the slender, fast body and the large grasping teeth of a pursuit predator that runs down and seizes prey in open water. Within the pre-collapse Lake Victoria community, mento was one of a guild of haplochromine piscivores that fed on the lake's smaller fishes, including the abundant zooplanktivorous and detritivorous haplochromines and small cyprinids — an entire native predatory niche that the introduced Nile perch later came to occupy and overwhelm.

Mating

Direct courtship observations specific to Haplochromis mento are not documented, but its reproductive behaviour can be read confidently from the haplochromine flock to which it belongs. These fish are maternal mouthbrooders with a polygynous, lek-like mating system. Males develop bright nuptial coloration and a row of yellow-to-orange 'egg-spots' on the anal fin, establish and defend a small territory, and court passing females with displays and quivering. The female is the choosy sex, selecting among displaying males largely on the basis of colour pattern — a form of sexual selection that is thought to have helped drive the explosive speciation of the Lake Victoria flock, since small differences in male colour can keep otherwise similar species reproductively isolated. After a brief courtship the pair spawns, and the female alone takes the eggs into her mouth; the male's role ends at fertilisation.

Breeding

As with all the Lake Victoria haplochromines, Haplochromis mento is a maternal mouthbrooder: the female incubates the fertilised eggs in her buccal cavity, brooding them through hatching and continuing to shelter the free-swimming fry in her mouth, releasing them to forage and gathering them back at any disturbance. Clutch sizes have not been published for this species specifically; congeneric Lake Victoria haplochromines typically produce small clutches on the order of a few tens of eggs (roughly 20–80), reflecting the trade-off between fecundity and the protection that mouthbrooding affords each large, well-provisioned egg. Fertilisation is mediated by the male's anal-fin egg-spots, which the female snaps at as she collects her eggs, drawing in milt. Parental care is performed entirely by the female and ends when the brood is released and independent; there is no biparental or substrate-guarding phase. No specific breeding triggers or developmental timings have been recorded for mento in the wild or in captivity.

In the aquarium

Haplochromis mento is essentially never seen in the aquarium hobby. It has no established common name and no trade presence; unlike a handful of colourful Lake Victoria haplochromines that survive in dedicated conservation-minded aquaria, this large open-water piscivore is not among the species maintained in hobbyist or public-aquarium breeding programmes in any meaningful numbers. Any keeping of it would be a specialist or institutional undertaking rather than a hobby proposition. Were it ever maintained, the requirements would follow from its biology: a long, open-swimming predator of around 7 in needs a large tank with a substantial footprint and open water rather than a rockwork maze; hard, alkaline water (pH on the order of 7.5–8.5) at roughly 75–81 °F to mirror Lake Victoria; a sand or sand-and-rock floor; and, because it is a committed piscivore, a meat-based diet. As a maternal mouthbrooder it would be best kept in a group with several females per male to spread male aggression, the standard approach for haplochromine flock fish. The honest summary, though, is that this is a wild species of conservation concern, not an aquarium fish.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Haplochromis mento as Data Deficient (assessed in 2010 by F. Witte and M.P. de Zeeuw), meaning there is not enough information to judge its extinction risk; its population trend is recorded as unknown. The assessment identifies the main threat as hybridisation driven by decreased water transparency: as eutrophication and erosion have clouded Lake Victoria, the clear-water visual environment that kept closely related, differently coloured haplochromines reproductively separate has broken down, allowing once-distinct species to interbreed. On top of this the species is threatened by predation from the introduced Nile perch (Lates niloticus) and is caught in the lake's fisheries, though it is not specifically targeted. These pressures sit within one of the most notorious episodes in conservation biology: the Lake Victoria haplochromine flock — several hundred endemic species — suffered a catastrophic decline from the 1980s onward following the Nile perch upsurge, compounded by eutrophication and the proliferation of the planktivorous 'dagaa' fishery. Many furu species are presumed extinct or are now Critically Endangered; the genuine uncertainty over whether mento persists, and in what numbers, is exactly what the Data Deficient listing reflects.
