Taxonomy & naming
This species was described by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1911 as Tilapia pallida, on material collected during E. Bayon's expedition to Uganda and published in the Annali del Museo Civico di Storia Naturale di Genova. The original series came from the northern shore of Lake Victoria at Jinja, the Ripon Falls (the lake's historic Nile outflow), and Bussu, in Uganda. Boulenger's syntype series was mixed, and the name was later restricted: Peter Humphry Greenwood, whose multi-part revision of the Lake Victoria Haplochromis dominated the mid-twentieth-century study of the flock, selected a lectotype (MSNG 12912, in the Genoa museum) in the fourth part of that revision in 1960, with paralectotypes in Genoa and in the Natural History Museum, London. Like almost every small cichlid of the lake, it was soon transferred out of Tilapia into the catch-all genus Haplochromis, where it has remained in general usage. Its nomenclatural history reflects the long struggle to carve up that genus: Regan (1920) placed pallida in Labrochromis, and Greenwood (1980), in his attempt at a phyletic classification, moved it to Astatotilapia. Those splits were never universally adopted, and most databases — FishBase and Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes among them — continue to list the fish as Haplochromis pallidus (Boulenger, 1911), the heading kept here. The species is part of the Lake Victoria superflock within the subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae.
Morphology
Haplochromis pallidus is a small cichlid: FishBase records a maximum of 3 in standard length, and the CLOFFA/Faunafri database gives 3 in SL for the type material, so this is a fish only a few centimetres long, in line with the great majority of the Victoria haplochromines. As in the rest of the flock, the body is the typical haplochromine form — moderately deep, laterally compressed, with a single continuous dorsal fin. The epithet pallidus, Latin for 'pale', records the muted, light coloration of the preserved (and presumably living) fish that struck Boulenger; it is not a brightly coloured species in the manner of the rock-dwelling 'furu' that male collectors prize. No detailed account of breeding-male nuptial colour has been documented for pallidus specifically, and because the species is known from so little material, claims about iridescent sheens or egg-spot counts cannot be made honestly here. In the haplochromines generally, males in breeding condition are the more colourful sex and bear conspicuous ocelli ('egg-spots') on the anal fin, while females and non-breeding fish are drabber; pallidus is presumed to follow that pattern, but the specifics are not on record.
Habitat
The species is endemic to Lake Victoria, the great shallow equatorial lake shared by Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania. Boulenger's types came from the Ugandan (northern) shore around Jinja and the former Ripon Falls; its presence in the Tanzanian sector of the lake has never been confirmed. Remarkably for a described species, it is essentially known from a single locality — an exposed, shallow, sandy beach — which is all the habitat note that the primary literature supports. That places pallidus among the sand- and shoreline-associated haplochromines rather than the rock-dwellers, but it gives little basis for a fuller biotope description. Lake Victoria itself is warm and only moderately mineralised: surface waters typically run about 73–81 °F, with pH on the alkaline side of neutral (commonly in the range of roughly 7.2 to 9.0) and modest hardness. The species is benthopelagic and, being a shallow-shore fish, lives within the first few metres of the water column; no precise depth range has been published for it, so the shallow-littoral band is given here with that caveat rather than a measured figure.
Feeding
Haplochromis pallidus is a bottom-feeding insectivore and detritivore. The few specimens examined for the Greenwood revision contained moderately large quantities of bottom debris — sand grains, diatom frustules and fragments of plant tissue — together with fragmentary insect larvae, tentatively identified as Diptera (true-fly, e.g. midge, larvae). That gut content, and the low trophic level FishBase estimates for the species (about 2.6), mark it as a fish that worked the sandy bottom for small invertebrates and the organic material trapped there, rather than a piscivore or a specialised plant- or mollusc-eater. Within the Lake Victoria flock — historically one of the most finely partitioned freshwater fish communities on Earth, divided among insectivores, detritivores, zooplanktivores, molluscivores, algae-scrapers, paedophages and piscivores — pallidus sat in the benthic-insectivore/detritivore guild that fed across the soft-bottomed inshore zone.
Mating
No courtship or social behaviour has been described for Haplochromis pallidus from the wild; the species is too poorly known for that. What can be said is framed by the biology of the flock to which it belongs. The Lake Victoria haplochromines are maternal mouthbrooders in which males, not females, drive courtship: a ripe male typically establishes a small territory or a display arena, advertises to females with body colour and the egg-spot ocelli on his anal fin, and performs a lateral, quivering display to lead a female to spawn. Female mate choice based on male colour is a central, well-studied force in this radiation, and the erosion of that colour-based choice under turbid water is implicated in the flock's recent decline (see Conservation). For pallidus in particular, the courtship arena, territoriality and seasonal timing are simply not on record.
Breeding
Like the rest of the Lake Victoria haplochromine flock, Haplochromis pallidus is a maternal (female) mouthbrooder: FishBase records 'mouthbrooding by females' for the species. After spawning, the female takes the fertilised eggs into her mouth and broods them there through hatching and the early free-swimming stage, releasing the fry and, for a time, allowing them to retreat back into her mouth when threatened. No clutch count, egg size, brooding duration or fry-development data have been published for pallidus itself — it is far too sparsely collected for that. As a genus-typical figure, small haplochromines of this size brood modest clutches on the order of a few dozen relatively large, yolk-rich eggs (commonly cited at roughly 20–60 for fish of this body size), a low-fecundity, high-investment strategy that is the rule across the flock. Those numbers are given here as the genus pattern, not as measurements of this species.
In the aquarium
Haplochromis pallidus is essentially not an aquarium fish. It is a small, pale, scientifically obscure member of the Lake Victoria flock, known from a single locality and not present in the ornamental trade; there is no body of hobbyist husbandry or captive-breeding experience for it to report, and it would be misleading to invent one. The fish that do reach Victoria-cichlid keepers are a small set of more colourful, more readily collected haplochromines (and conservation-program species held in public aquaria), not this one.
What can be offered is general guidance for the group, should material ever become available. Lake Victoria haplochromines are kept much like their Lake Malawi relatives but tuned to a smaller, sandier, often more boisterous fish: a tank with a good footprint (35.5 in / ~55 US gal or more for a group), a fine sand substrate appropriate to a shoreline species, some structure for sightline breaks and refuge, and hard, alkaline water around pH 7.5–8.5 at 73–79 °F. These are maternal mouthbrooders best kept as one male with several females to spread male aggression, with the understanding that haplochromines hybridise readily in captivity, so species and even close relatives should not be mixed if the fish are to stay genetically clean — a point that matters especially for any conservation-minded keeping of Victoria endemics. For pallidus specifically, none of this has been tested; the honest summary is that it is a wild fish of scientific rather than aquarium interest.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Haplochromis pallidus as Data Deficient, assessed on 31 March 2010 by F. Witte and M.P. de Zeeuw — both authorities on the Lake Victoria flock — and that remains its current listing (verified live on the Red List). The Data Deficient category reflects exactly the problem this article runs into throughout: there is no information on the species' population size now or in the past, its presence in the Tanzanian sector of the lake has never been confirmed, and it is known from very little material. The assessment names two threats. The first is hybridization driven by decreased water transparency: as nutrient pollution and the loss of the lake's clear water blurred the colour signals on which female haplochromines choose mates, reproductive isolation between closely related species has broken down, collapsing distinct forms into hybrid swarms. The second is predation by the introduced Nile perch (Lates niloticus), whose explosive increase in the 1980s is widely held responsible for the loss or severe reduction of a large fraction of the lake's several hundred endemic haplochromine species; pallidus is also taken incidentally in the fishery, though not specifically targeted. Whether this particular small, sand-beach species persists, has recovered alongside the partial post-perch rebound of some haplochromine groups, or has quietly disappeared, is unknown — which is the literal meaning of its Data Deficient status.
