Taxonomy & naming
Haplochromis paraguiarti was described by the British ichthyologist Peter Humphry Greenwood in 1967, in part VI of his long-running 'A revision of the Lake Victoria Haplochromis species' published in the Bulletin of the British Museum (Natural History), Zoology (vol. 15, no. 2, p. 69, fig. 12). The holotype (BMNH 1966.2.21.6) and a large series of paratypes are held at the Natural History Museum, London; the type locality is a beach near Nasu Point in the Buvuma Channel, on the Ugandan (northern) side of the lake. The specific epithet combines the Greek para- ('beside, near') with the name of the congener guiarti, signalling Greenwood's view that the new fish was a near-twin of the earlier-named Haplochromis guiarti (Pellegrin, 1904) and most readily distinguished from it. Like much of the Victoria flock, the species has been shuffled between genera: Greenwood's later (1979–1980) breakup of the catch-all genus Haplochromis would place predatory, sharp-headed forms of this kind in the genus Prognathochromis, and the combination Prognathochromis paraguiarti appears in some databases. Most working checklists, however — including the CLOFFA treatment by van Oijen and colleagues (1991) and FishBase — retain the conservative usage Haplochromis paraguiarti, and that broad-sense Haplochromis is the heading used here.
Morphology
This is a small haplochromine, reaching about 6 in in standard length (the maximum recorded by Greenwood; most specimens are smaller). It shows the generalized Victoria-haplochromine body plan — a moderately deep, laterally compressed body with a single continuous dorsal fin — and Greenwood diagnosed it primarily by its overall similarity to Haplochromis guiarti, from which it differs in details of head shape, dentition and squamation rather than in any single dramatic feature. As in essentially all members of the flock, breeding males would have carried the genus-typical anal-fin egg-spots (ocelli) and assumed brighter nuptial colours, while females and non-breeding fish are a plainer silvery-brown; precise live colours for this species are poorly documented, because almost all knowledge of it comes from preserved museum material rather than from observation of living fish. Detailed sexual-dimorphism notes beyond this general pattern were not published.
Habitat
Haplochromis paraguiarti is endemic to Lake Victoria, the great shallow rift-valley lake shared by Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania, and is recorded from roughly 1°N to 3°S. Greenwood found it characteristically on exposed, wave-washed beaches where the bottom is firm — sand, rock or shingle — with only a few records from more sheltered water. It is a benthopelagic fish of the littoral and sub-littoral zone, taken down to about 30 ft depth (FishBase, after the CLOFFA checklist). No detailed in-situ water chemistry was published for this species specifically; Lake Victoria as a whole is warm (surface waters roughly 73–81 °F) and moderately alkaline, with pH generally in the 7.2–9.0 range, and these basin-wide figures are the best available guide to the conditions it lived in.
Feeding
Despite its resemblance to Haplochromis guiarti and the predatory associations of the Prognathochromis grouping, the limited dietary evidence does NOT mark paraguiarti out as a fish-eater. Most of the specimens Greenwood examined contained either macerated plant tissue or a mixture of plant tissue and insect fragments — specifically mayfly (Ephemeroptera) larvae. That gut content places it as a benthic phytophage/insectivore foraging over the firm beach substrate it inhabits, rather than a piscivore; FishBase assigns it an estimated trophic level of about 3.2, consistent with an invertebrate-and-plant diet rather than top predation. As with most of the flock, its feeding has never been studied in detail in life, so this picture rests on a modest sample of preserved stomachs and should be read as indicative rather than definitive.
Mating
No courtship or social behaviour has been described for Haplochromis paraguiarti specifically; the fish was known almost entirely from museum specimens and disappeared from the lake before any behavioural study could be made. What can be said is drawn by inference from the wider Lake Victoria flock, which is uniformly built on the haplochromine pattern: males establish small, often shifting territories on or near the substrate, advertise to females with their nuptial colours and anal-fin egg-spots, and there is no lasting pair bond. Spawning is brief, and the female alone takes the eggs into her mouth — the prelude to the maternal mouthbrooding described below.
Breeding
Haplochromis paraguiarti is recorded simply as a mouthbrooder, and like every member of the Lake Victoria haplochromine flock it is a maternal (female-only) mouthbrooder: the female collects the fertilized eggs into her buccal cavity and broods them there, releasing the free-swimming fry only after they have absorbed the yolk. Species-specific figures for clutch size and brooding duration were never published for this fish; Victoria haplochromines of its size typically lay small clutches on the order of a few dozen eggs and brood them for roughly two to three weeks, and that genus-typical range is the only guide available. There is no aquarium breeding record. The maternal-mouthbrooding strategy, which trades large egg numbers for intensive care of a few well-developed young, is one of the traits that allowed the flock to radiate into hundreds of species in the lake.
In the aquarium
Haplochromis paraguiarti is, for practical purposes, not an aquarium fish. It is a Data Deficient and very possibly extinct Lake Victoria endemic that was never established in the hobby and is not in cultivation; it has no trade name and no husbandry literature. The general requirements of surviving Victoria haplochromines are well understood — hard, alkaline water (pH around 7.5–8.5), temperatures of roughly 75–81 °F, a spacious tank with open sand and rock to absorb the spirited intraspecific aggression typical of the flock, and a maternal-mouthbrooder's need for the female to be given cover after spawning. Those parameters are offered only as context for the kind of fish this was; no one keeps this species, and any tank described as holding it would almost certainly be holding a misidentified relative. Aquarists genuinely interested in the Victoria flock are better served by the handful of forms that conservation-breeding programmes have kept alive ex-situ.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Haplochromis paraguiarti as Data Deficient (assessed 31 March 2010 by F. Witte and M. P. de Zeeuw, published 2010), reflecting how little is known of its current status. The assessment notes the species is restricted to firm-substrate littoral and sub-littoral habitat and lists the threats that have reshaped the whole lake: the introduced Nile perch (Lates niloticus), over-fishing, and pollution from domestic, industrial and agricultural sources, compounded by the lake's eutrophication. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes goes further and flags the species outright as extinct. Whichever label is correct, the backdrop is the same and is one of the best-documented mass-extinction events in modern freshwater fish: the explosive spread of Nile perch through Lake Victoria in the 1980s, together with eutrophication and the loss of water clarity, drove the catastrophic decline of an endemic haplochromine flock once numbering several hundred species (Witte et al. 1992 and subsequent work). Many of those species, like paraguiarti, are now known only from the museum jars in which Greenwood's generation preserved them.
