Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Haplochromis sauvagei is a small, chessboard-patterned haplochromine from the rocky and sandy margins of Lake Victoria, one of the very few members of that vast endemic flock to have established itself in the aquarium hobby (where it is traded as the 'rock kribensis'). A maternal mouthbrooder of the rock-dwelling 'mbipi' assemblage, it makes its living chiefly as an oral-shelling snail eater. The IUCN lists it as Vulnerable, a survivor of the Nile-perch and eutrophication collapse that erased much of Victoria's haplochromine diversity.

Taxonomy & naming

Georg Johann Pfeffer described this fish in 1896 as Ctenochromis sauvagei, on material from Victoria-Nyanza at Lake Ukerewe — the type locality is Kagehi (Kageyi), on the southern shore of Lake Victoria in the Mwanza district of Tanzania, near 2°23'S, 33°06'E. The name has long been treated as valid in the catch-all genus Haplochromis (van Oijen et al. 1991; Seegers 2008), and FishBase and Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes both list it today as Haplochromis sauvagei (Pfeffer, 1896). The type material has a tangled history: Pfeffer's unique holotype (ZMB 22222) was considered lost by P.H. Greenwood, who in his 1957 revision designated a neotype (BMNH 1956.9.17.1) — but Seegers (2008), cataloguing the East African fishes collected in the 1880s, located the original holotype after all. Generic placement remains genuinely unsettled. In his monograph on the lake's rock cichlids, Ole Seehausen (1996) placed the species in the Ptyochromis lineage (as the subgenus Haplochromis (Ptyochromis)), a largely sand-dwelling group of oral snail-shellers; in the hobby and some checklists it is instead carried as Paralabidochromis sauvagei. Because no comprehensive, stable genus-level revision of the Victoria flock has been adopted, this profile retains the conservative Haplochromis heading used by the primary databases while noting the modern alternatives.

Morphology

Haplochromis sauvagei is a small cichlid: FishBase gives a maximum of 4 in standard length, and keepers report mature males to roughly 4.5–5 in total length with females noticeably smaller, around 3.5 in. The body is moderately deep with a characteristically steep dorsal head profile, and the mouth carries the diagnostic dentition of its lineage — strong, recurved outer teeth that in the lower jaw are procumbent (forward-leaning), well suited to prising the soft body of a snail from its shell. Greenwood (1957) described males as grey-green or blue-grey with a coppery sheen on the flanks and the underside of the gill cover; the coppery-cheeked populations are northern. Many fish show a broken 'chessboard' of dark blotches over the flank, sometimes overlying or replacing a mid-lateral stripe — the pattern that earns the trade name. Sexual dimorphism is pronounced in colour: courting males flush with blue and red (a blue dorsal fin, and an anal fin that runs from coppery to entirely red depending on the colour morph), while females are a plain brassy or greyish yellow, often with a bright yellow throat. Considerable geographic variation in male colour exists between island and shore populations, and Seehausen flagged the possibility that the northern and southern forms could even represent a sibling-species pair.

Habitat

The species is endemic to Lake Victoria, the great East African Rift lake shared by Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya, and it falls within the Lake Victoria Basin freshwater ecoregion. It belongs to the 'mbipi', the lake's rock-dwelling haplochromine community, but is not a pure rock specialist. Seehausen (1996) found it specifically in places where patches of sandy substrate are interspersed with shelter — rock, vegetation, or both — and noted it is largely absent from continuous rock habitat that lacks sand pockets; FishBase similarly records it from the hard-bottomed littoral zone and 'especially common over exposed sandy beaches.' It occupies shallow water, from less than 3 ft down to at least 16 ft depth. Lake Victoria's open water is warm and alkaline: FishBase gives a temperature range of about 75–81 °F, and the lake's surface water is well-buffered and hard, typically running pH on the order of 7.2–9.0. Unusually for a rock cichlid, both sexes of Haplochromis sauvagei occur at the rocks in roughly equal numbers, rather than the population being dominated by territorial males.

Feeding

The primary literature and the aggregators disagree slightly on the trophic label, and the honest answer is that Haplochromis sauvagei is a snail-eating generalist. Seehausen (1996) is explicit that it 'feeds predominantly on snails,' and describes the characteristic oral-shelling technique of its lineage: the fish approaches a moving snail, pauses a few millimetres off, turns its head slightly sideways, then seizes the exposed soft body with a sudden bite and jerks to tear it free of the shell; small, thin-shelled snails may instead be crushed whole between the pharyngeal jaws. FishBase records a broader bottom-feeding diet of gastropods plus bottom deposits containing insect larvae, copepods and diatoms, with larval boring mayflies (Povilla adusta) prominent among the insects, and Seehausen's own summary elsewhere characterises the species as an omnivore taking epilithic algae, associated insects and sponges. Its estimated trophic level is low (about 2.7). In practice it is best read as an oral-shelling molluscivore with enough dietary breadth — insects, algae, detritus — to be called an omnivore, which is exactly the flexibility that has helped it persist where narrower specialists did not.

Mating

Like the rest of the Lake Victoria haplochromine radiation, Haplochromis sauvagei is a polygynous maternal mouthbrooder, and there is no lasting pair bond. Males develop their blue-and-red nuptial colours and court ripe females over the sand-and-rubble bottom, using the standard haplochromine display in which the male presents his flank and the egg-spot-bearing anal fin to a female. Because both sexes share the same patchy sand-and-shelter habitat in roughly equal numbers — rather than males monopolising exposed rock territories — encounters between the sexes are frequent. Female choice on male colour is a powerful force in this flock, and the strong geographic differences in male coloration between Victoria populations are part of how closely related rock species stay reproductively separate. That separation is fragile, however: in turbid, eutrophied water the colour signals that keep species apart break down, and hybridisation between Haplochromis sauvagei and other haplochromines is documented both in the lake and readily in aquaria.

Breeding

Reproduction follows the textbook Lake Victoria pattern. After courtship and spawning the female takes the fertilised eggs into her mouth and broods them there; the male plays no further part. Clutches are modest, matching the fish's small size — hobby spawnings typically yield around 40–45 eggs from adult females. The female mouthbroods for roughly three weeks (keepers report holding for about 24 days before fry are fully developed), during which she does not feed, then releases free-swimming young. The fry are small and are best started on baby brine shrimp; they grow quickly and begin to show adult colour at around an inch in length. No special seasonal trigger is required in captivity beyond good condition and stable, clean water — the species is, if anything, prone to spawning frequently.

In the aquarium

Haplochromis sauvagei is genuinely one of the few Lake Victoria haplochromines with a foothold in the hobby, sold under the name 'rock kribensis' (sometimes by island form, e.g. 'Makobe'), and it has a deserved reputation as hardy, undemanding and easy to breed. A small group can be kept and bred in a tank of about 20 gallons furnished with rockwork and open sand; a 40-gallon (or larger) footprint is better as the fish mature, and a harem of one male to several females reduces wear on individual females. Water should reflect the lake: hard, alkaline and warm — pH comfortably above 7.5 (the lake itself runs to around 9) and a temperature in the mid-20s °C. They are not fussy feeders and thrive on a varied diet of quality flake and pellet with frozen or live foods; snails are taken with relish and a tankful of pest snails will not last long.

The real husbandry pitfalls are social rather than chemical. The first is hybridisation: Haplochromis sauvagei crosses freely with other Victorian haplochromines (and the resulting fry pollute hobby bloodlines), so it should never be kept with similar-looking Victoria species, and breeders should keep it as a single-species tank or alongside clearly different, unrelated fish. The second is that, although not especially aggressive, males can harass females and conspecifics; the usual mbipi remedies of generous rockwork, sightline breaks and keeping the sexes in a skewed ratio apply. Because the fish defend themselves well without being bullies, they make effective 'dither' and have been mixed successfully with robust Lake Malawi mbuna, but mixing with other Victorians demands caution. Frequent water changes keep them in spawning condition. Maintaining a documented location form unmixed is the single most valuable contribution a keeper can make, given how much of this fish's wild diversity has already been lost.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Haplochromis sauvagei as Vulnerable under criterion D2 (assessed 31 March 2010 by Witte, de Zeeuw & Brooks; population trend unknown). It carries no CITES or CMS listing. The assessment reflects the catastrophe that overtook the Lake Victoria haplochromine flock in the late twentieth century: the introduced Nile perch (Lates niloticus), compounded by lake-wide eutrophication, turbidity and oxygen loss, drove an estimated several hundred endemic haplochromine species to extinction or near-extinction in a few decades — one of the largest vertebrate extinction events of modern times. Haplochromis sauvagei was among the survivors, helped by its shallow rock-and-sand refuge habitat and its flexible diet, and some haplochromines have partially recovered as the Nile perch fishery matured. But the species remains exposed to the same ongoing pressures — predation, eutrophication, sedimentation from catchment land use, and the signal-degrading turbidity that promotes hybridisation and erodes the very reproductive boundaries that define these fishes.
