Taxonomy & naming
Haplochromis saxicola was described by the British ichthyologist Peter Humphry Greenwood in 1960, in Part IV of his monumental multi-part "A revision of the Lake Victoria Haplochromis species (Pisces, Cichlidae)", published in the Bulletin of the British Museum (Natural History), Zoology series. The type locality is Ramafuta Island, Uganda, in the northern reaches of Lake Victoria, and Greenwood based the species exclusively on fishes from these northern shores. The holotype (BMNH 1959.4.28.249) and a long series of paratypes are held at the Natural History Museum, London. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats the name as valid as Haplochromis saxicola Greenwood 1960, in the family Cichlidae, subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae. In his later reclassification of the Lake Victoria flock Greenwood split the unwieldy catch-all genus Haplochromis into a series of smaller genera, and saxicola falls within Psammochromis (type species Haplochromis riponianus) — a lineage of robust, often insect- and mollusc-eating fishes of hard bottoms. Many workers, including Seehausen and colleagues in their survey of the lake's rock cichlids, accordingly refer to the fish as Psammochromis saxicola, while FishBase and the Catalog of Fishes retain the conservative Haplochromis combination used here. The species is anatomically close to Haplochromis riponianus, from which it differs chiefly in male coloration, in its more slender pharyngeal bones (which in most individuals lack the molar-like crushing teeth riponianus develops), and in its frequently longer lower jaw.
Morphology
This is a modest-sized haplochromine: FishBase gives a maximum of about 5 in standard length, and the species is typically smaller in the hand. The body is the generalised perch-like haplochromine form, moderately deep and laterally compressed, with a pointed snout and a comparatively long lower jaw. Greenwood's northern type material had somewhat longer heads and lower jaws than the southeastern populations Seehausen later examined, a geographic gradient that runs across several related Psammochromis as well. Breeding males are grey-green over the flanks, with black in the pelvic fins; quiescent males and females closely resemble Haplochromis riponianus and carry the muted, blotchy camouflage pattern typical of the flock. Southern fish referred to saxicola show five to six dark vertical bars on the flanks. Internally the species is distinguished by relatively slender pharyngeal (throat) bones bearing only slightly enlarged, non-molariform teeth and fewer rows of oral teeth than riponianus; in older fish the oral teeth are frequently worn down to abraded stumps, a signature of a diet that includes hard-shelled prey. Sexual dimorphism follows the haplochromine norm — males develop the brighter nuptial color and the egg-spot ('egg-dummy') markings on the anal fin used in spawning, while females stay drab.
Habitat
Haplochromis saxicola is endemic to Lake Victoria, the great shallow equatorial lake shared by Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya, and FishBase notes it probably extends into the Victoria Nile; the Catalog of Fishes records its distribution as Lake Victoria and the Victoria Nile. It is a fish of hard substrates — exposed beaches, rock, shingle and sand bottoms, and dense plant stands near rocky shores. Unlike the most specialised 'Mbipi' rock cichlids of the lake, the Psammochromis lineage is not strictly confined to rock; saxicola has been described from rock, shingle and sand alike. Seehausen and colleagues found it abundant in very shallow water — subadults in less than 2 ft and full adults from about 3 ft to at least 7 ft depth over rubble and small boulders, for example at Chamagati Island in the Tanzanian (southeastern) part of the lake. FishBase records the species down to about 30 ft. Notably, catches showed an approximately even sex ratio, a rare feature among the lake's rock-dwelling haplochromines. Lake Victoria is warm (roughly 73–81 °F in the surface waters these fish occupy) and alkaline, with pH on the order of 7.2–9.0; it is the visually clear, well-lit inshore habitat that historically allowed the flock's color-based mate choice to function.
Feeding
Within the Lake Victoria trophic scheme, Haplochromis saxicola is an insectivore that takes hard prey — a predator of large insect larvae and small molluscs. FishBase summarises its diet as mainly insect larvae (Diptera, probably chironomid midge larvae), together with snails and ostracods. Stomach and gut examinations reported by Seehausen and colleagues found a single fish from Matwinki Island containing mayfly larvae, caddisfly larvae, chironomid larvae and ostracods in roughly equal parts, plus the crushed shells of some fairly large sphaeriid (pea) clams. The slightly enlarged pharyngeal bones and the worn, stubby teeth fit this menu: the fish gathers invertebrates from among rocks and shingle and crushes the shelled items in its throat. FishBase places it at a trophic level of about 3.4, mid-way up the food web — a small benthic invertebrate-feeder rather than a piscivore or an algae-scraper.
Mating
Like the rest of the Lake Victoria haplochromine flock, Haplochromis saxicola is a polygynous, promiscuous mouthbrooder in which there is no lasting pair bond. Males hold and defend small territories on the substrate and court passing females with displays of their nuptial coloration and the anal-fin egg-spots, while females range more widely and are mouthbrooders that take sole charge of the brood. The lake's haplochromines are textbook examples of color-based assortative mating: females discriminate among males largely by male nuptial hue under clear, well-lit water, and this visual mate choice is thought to have driven and to maintain the flock's explosive speciation. Specific courtship observations for saxicola itself are not documented in detail, but its even sex ratio in the catch and the bright grey-green nuptial dress of breeding males are consistent with the standard lek-like haplochromine system.
Breeding
Haplochromis saxicola is a maternal (female) mouthbrooder, as FishBase records and as is universal in the Lake Victoria haplochromine radiation. After a male fertilises the eggs on the substrate — the female typically snapping at the egg-dummy spots on his anal fin to take in milt — she carries the developing eggs and then the larvae in her buccal cavity, providing all the parental care; the male contributes none beyond fertilisation. The fry are released as free-swimming young once developed and may briefly shelter in the mother's mouth when threatened. No clutch count specific to saxicola has been published, but related small Lake Victoria haplochromines of this size are low-fecundity mouthbrooders typically carrying on the order of a few dozen eggs per brood; FishBase rates the species' resilience as high, with a minimum population doubling time of under 15 months. Breeding is not tied to a fixed season in the warm, aseasonal equatorial lake.
In the aquarium
Haplochromis saxicola is essentially not an aquarium fish. It is a small, undescribed-in-the-hobby Lake Victoria insectivore with no established presence in the ornamental trade, no recognised common name, and no body of hobbyist breeding reports — quite unlike the handful of charismatic Victorian haplochromines (the 'nyererei' and 'Christmas fulu' types) that conservation-minded keepers maintain. Anyone who did keep it would treat it as a generic Lake Victoria haplochromine: a hard-water species needing alkaline conditions (pH around 7.5–8.5), warm temperatures of roughly 75–81 °F, and a rock-and-sand aquascape with broken lines of sight, since haplochromine males are persistent and aggressive toward rivals. Because the genus crushes snails and insect larvae, a varied diet of frozen and live invertebrates suits it. The far more important context for this fish is conservation rather than husbandry: captive 'ark' populations of threatened Lake Victoria haplochromines are maintained by aquarium and zoo programs precisely because so many wild species were driven to the brink, but saxicola is not among the forms currently held in those programs.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Haplochromis saxicola as Data Deficient (assessed 31 March 2010 by Witte, F. & de Zeeuw, M.P.), reflecting how little is known of its current distribution and population. The assessment names the principal threat as predation by the introduced Nile perch (Lates niloticus) — a pressure the assessors regard as potentially reversible — together with possible hybridisation driven by declining water clarity: eutrophication, erosion, sedimentation and runoff have turned much of the once-clear lake turbid, blurring the visual cues on which haplochromine mate recognition depends and allowing formerly distinct species to interbreed. The boom of the Nile perch from the 1980s onward, compounded by this water-quality collapse and by heavy fishing, drove a catastrophic decline of the Lake Victoria haplochromine flock, with many endemic species lost or reduced to remnants. As a hard-bottom, inshore species saxicola sits squarely in the zone most affected by these changes; whether viable populations persist is exactly the uncertainty the Data Deficient listing records. It carries no CITES or CMS listing.
