Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Hybridization watchi

Haplochromis serranus is a large predatory cichlid endemic to Lake Victoria, one of the bigger fish-eaters of the lake's celebrated haplochromine species flock. Described by Georg Pfeffer in 1896 and named for its perch-like build, it lends its name to the "serranus group" of Victorian piscivores. Like all the flock it is a maternal mouthbrooder, and like most of the lake's larger predators it was hit hard by the Nile-perch upsurge of the 1980s; the IUCN lists it as Data Deficient.

Taxonomy & naming

Haplochromis serranus was described by the German zoologist Georg Johann Pfeffer in 1896, in his contribution on the vertebrate fauna of German East Africa within Karl Möbius's 'Die Thierwelt Deutsch-Ostafrikas'. He placed it originally in the genus Hemichromis, as Hemichromis serranus, on material from the Bukoba River on the north-western shore of Lake Victoria (in present-day Tanzania). The unique holotype was housed in the Berlin museum (ZMB, uncatalogued) and is now possibly lost — a common fate for the oldest African cichlid types. The species was later transferred to Haplochromis, the vast catch-all genus into which Regan (1922) and subsequent workers placed the hundreds of Lake Victoria haplochromines; van Oijen, Snoeks and colleagues confirmed the valid combination as Haplochromis serranus in their 1991 CLOFFA checklist. One name falls into synonymy: Haplochromis acutirostris Regan, 1922, described from Bunjako in Uganda, which van Oijen et al. (1991) treated as conspecific. The species is the eponymous member of the informal 'serranus group' of large-jawed Victorian piscivores, and Greenwood's later splitting of the Lake Victoria flock would have referred such fishes to the genus Prognathochromis. The atlas retains the conventional Haplochromis heading, under which the great majority of the literature and the hobby still file these fishes; readers should be aware that the modern, narrowly-defined Haplochromis is sometimes restricted to a different set of species, and the generic placement of the Victorian flock remains contentious.

Morphology

Haplochromis serranus is a comparatively large, elongate, perch-like haplochromine — its species epithet, from the seabass genus Serranus, was chosen precisely for that predatory, percoid look. FishBase gives a maximum of about 8 in standard length, placing it among the larger fish-eaters of a flock whose members are mostly well under 6 in. The piscivores of Lake Victoria share a consistent set of features that fit the hunting life: a large head (head length more than 36% of standard length), long jaws (lower-jaw length exceeding 45% of head length, and beyond 50% in many species), deep cheeks, and in many the lower jaw projecting beyond the upper. The oral teeth are typically acutely pointed unicuspids — straight to strongly recurved depending on the species — set in jaws built to seize and hold other fish; the intestine is correspondingly short for a vertebrate-eater (roughly 0.8–2.0, usually about 1.2–1.3 times the body length). As in all haplochromines, breeding males would have carried the brighter nuptial colours and the characteristic yellow or orange egg-spots (ocelli) on the anal fin, while females and non-breeding fish are plainer and more silvery; detailed in-life colour notes for this particular species are sparse, reflecting how little of the living flock was documented before the Nile-perch collapse.

Habitat

Haplochromis serranus is endemic to Lake Victoria, the vast, shallow, tropical lake shared by Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya, and is found nowhere else on Earth. FishBase records it from sheltered bays and gulfs where the bottom is soft organic mud, with all sampled localities lying less than 1640 ft from shore, and a recorded depth down to about 26 ft. The piscivore group as a whole, however, ranges far more widely across the lake — over every substrate type, from shallow littoral water less than a metre deep out to roughly 164 ft in open water — and every species in the group is a Lake Victoria endemic. Lake Victoria's water is warm, near-neutral to alkaline and only moderately mineralised: shallow inshore temperatures generally sit in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius (around 73–81 °F) and pH runs from about 7.2 up to 9.0, conditions typical of this great equatorial soda-influenced basin. The lake has changed dramatically since this fish was first described — eutrophication, falling water clarity and deoxygenation of the deeper water have reshaped its habitats over the twentieth century, compounding the pressure from the introduced Nile perch.

Feeding

Haplochromis serranus is a piscivore — a fish-eater — and FishBase places it at a high trophic level of about 4.2, near the top of the lake's food web. Victorian piscivores hunt by a range of techniques, broadly divided into ambush and pursuit hunting, and their morphology (big head, long jaws, recurved unicuspid teeth, short gut) is built for catching and swallowing other fishes whole. The overwhelming majority of their prey is other haplochromine cichlids: with several hundred small haplochromine species packed into the lake, the predators fed largely on their own flock-mates, taking everything from newly-released, post-buccal juveniles about 0.5 in long up to adult fish. Roughly ten haplochromine piscivore species specialised on the silver cyprinid Rastrineobola argentea ('dagaa' / 'mukene'), and small Barbus such as Barbus radiatus profundus were also taken, but small cichlids were the staple. The larger species — and at around 8 in serranus is one of them — were not strictly tied to large prey; prey size tracked predator size only loosely. Before the Nile perch upsurge, this guild of haplochromine predators, together with native non-cichlid fish-eaters (the catfishes Bagrus docmac and Clarias gariepinus, the lungfish Protopterus aethiopicus, and birds and otters inshore), sat at the apex of the lake's fish community and helped regulate the densities of the smaller haplochromines below them.

Mating

No courtship or social behaviour has been documented specifically for Haplochromis serranus, and this section is written from what is known of the Lake Victoria flock generally rather than from direct observation of this species. Lake Victoria haplochromines are, almost without exception, polygynous maternal mouthbrooders with no lasting pair bond. Breeding males develop bright nuptial colouration and display the egg-spots on the anal fin, court females with quivering and lateral displays, and — in many species — defend a small spawning territory or take part in loose leks; the female visits, spawns, and departs to brood alone, so the male's investment ends at fertilisation. The anal-fin ocelli are central to the spawning act: as the female snaps at what look like loose eggs on the displaying male's fin, she takes up sperm and fertilises the clutch already in her mouth. Whether serranus held discrete territories or spawned more opportunistically is not on record.

Breeding

Breeding has not been documented in detail for Haplochromis serranus itself; what follows is genus- and group-typical, drawn from the well-studied Lake Victoria flock. Haplochromis serranus is a maternal (female-only) mouthbrooder: the female takes the fertilised eggs into her mouth and incubates them there through hatching and the early free-swimming stage, the male providing no parental care. Clutch sizes in Victorian haplochromines are modest and scale with female body size; for the piscivore group the only direct figure comes from one of the smaller members, Haplochromis nanoserranus, with a mean of about 66 eggs and an egg diameter near 0.5 in, while across the flock fecundities of a few tens of eggs are usual and a large female such as serranus would be expected toward the upper end. Littoral species tend to breed more or less year-round, whereas those from deeper, open water are more seasonal. Newly released fry are well-developed and immediately able to feed, and the female may shelter them in her mouth for a short period after they first swim free. The brooding female stops feeding while carrying, which is part of why these fishes are so vulnerable to the combined pressures of trawling and predation.

In the aquarium

Haplochromis serranus is essentially not an aquarium fish. It has no established presence in the hobby, no settled common name, and the Cichlid Room Companion notes only that a handful of specimens were brought to Europe as part of conservation efforts to recover Lake Victoria predators that had vanished from the lake to Nile-perch predation — the species was last collected in 1993. Any keeping notes are therefore extrapolated from the better-known Lake Victoria haplochromines that do circulate among specialists. As a roughly 8 in, actively predatory, open-water hunter it would demand a large tank (on the order of 120 US gal or more for a group), hard, alkaline water matching the lake (pH around 7.5–8.5, temperature 73–81 °F), robust filtration, and a diet of meaty foods; it could not be safely housed with anything small enough to be swallowed, and males of these fishes are typically aggressive, so a one-male, several-female harem in a long tank is the usual formula. Realistically, though, this is a fish for the conservation breeding programme and the museum drawer, not the living-room aquarium, and a hobbyist is far more likely to encounter one of the smaller, commercially-bred 'Victorian Hap' species instead.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Haplochromis serranus as Data Deficient (assessed in 2010 by F. Witte and M.P. de Zeeuw), reflecting genuine uncertainty about whether, and where, the species still survives. Its native range spans the Kenyan, Tanzanian and Ugandan waters of Lake Victoria, and its population trend is recorded as unknown. The backdrop is the best-known ecological disaster in modern freshwater conservation: the deliberate introduction of the Nile perch (Lates niloticus), which from the late 1970s into the 1980s erupted into a vast predatory population and, together with intensive trawling and the lake's eutrophication, drove the collapse of the haplochromine flock — by many estimates the loss or severe decline of well over 200 endemic cichlid species. The large sub-littoral piscivores, the guild to which serranus belongs, were among the hardest hit and 'almost completely vanished' from much of the lake; in the Mwanza Gulf the predators had already been seriously depleted by the trawl fishery even before the perch took hold. Some haplochromines have since shown partial recovery in refuge habitats — rocky reefs, weedy bays and shallow, well-oxygenated shallows that the Nile perch frequents less — so there is a real possibility that serranus persists in such cover, but its last confirmed collection was in 1993 and its current status is, honestly, unknown.
