Taxonomy & naming
Haplochromis simpsoni was described by the British ichthyologist Peter Humphry Greenwood in 1965, in his monograph 'The cichlid fishes of Lake Nabugabo, Uganda' (Bulletin of the British Museum (Natural History), Zoology), where it appears on page 324 with a figure. The holotype (BMNH 1964.7.1:12) and twenty-one paratypes are lodged in the Natural History Museum, London, all from Lake Nabugabo, the type locality. Some of the paratype material had originally been collected during the 1930–1931 Cambridge expedition to the East African lakes and had been misidentified by Ethelwynn Trewavas (1933) as 'Haplochromis velifer'; Greenwood separated it as a distinct species. In his 1980 phyletic reclassification of the Lake Victoria–region flock, Greenwood reassigned the species to a new genus as Gaurochromis simpsoni, one of the many segregate genera (Astatotilapia, Paralabidochromis, Gaurochromis, Mylacochromis and others) he erected to break up the unwieldy catch-all Haplochromis. Most of those genera have not been broadly accepted: molecular work shows the Lake Victoria 'superflock' to be a very young, barely differentiated radiation in which such finely split genera are not cleanly diagnosable, so modern usage—including FishBase and the Catalog of Fishes—returns the species to Haplochromis, and Gaurochromis simpsoni is treated as a synonym. We keep the Haplochromis heading here while noting Greenwood's Gaurochromis placement. The species sits within the haplochromine assemblage of the Lake Victoria region, the most species-rich cichlid radiation known.
Morphology
Haplochromis simpsoni is a modestly sized haplochromine, reaching about 4.5 in in standard length—a few centimetres longer than many of its flock-mates but still a small fish. It has the generalized, moderately deep-bodied haplochromine form, with a single nostril on each side, the interrupted lateral line, and the egg-spots (ocelli) on the anal fin that are typical of the lineage and serve in spawning. As is the rule among Lake Victoria haplochromines, the species is strongly sexually dichromatic: breeding males carry the bright, species-specific nuptial coloration that drives the assortative mate choice underpinning the radiation, while females and non-breeding individuals are a plainer, cryptic silvery-brown. Detailed live coloration is poorly documented for this species in the modern literature, and no photograph accompanies its FishBase record. The dentition and jaw structure are those of an insectivore rather than the specialized scrapers, crushers or predators seen in other members of the flock.
Habitat
The species is endemic to Lake Nabugabo, a small (about 15 mi²) and shallow lake with a mean depth of only around 15 ft, lying in an extensive papyrus and Miscanthidium swamp on the western shore of Lake Victoria in southern Uganda. Nabugabo was cut off from Lake Victoria by a sand bar roughly 4,000 years ago and has since evolved its own small set of endemic haplochromines, making it a natural laboratory for studying rapid cichlid speciation. Greenwood recorded Haplochromis simpsoni inshore over a variety of bottoms—amongst emergent vegetation, over exposed sandy beaches, and some distance offshore over mud—so it is a habitat generalist within this little lake rather than a specialist of one biotope. The lake's open water is very dilute and only slightly alkaline (conductivity below about 40 µS/cm), while the surrounding swamp water is more acidic and tannin-stained; FishBase does not publish species-specific pH or temperature ranges, but as a shallow equatorial lake on the Equator (0–1°S) Nabugabo sits squarely in the warm, soft-water envelope typical of the Victoria basin (roughly pH 7.2–9.0 and 73–81 °F). The wetland fringes are important: their hypoxic, vegetated margins act as predator refugia.
Feeding
Haplochromis simpsoni is an omnivorous bottom feeder that preys chiefly on insect larvae, placing it among the insectivores of the Lake Victoria–region trophic spectrum (FishBase estimates a trophic level of about 3.2). It works a range of inshore substrates, taking benthic invertebrates—particularly aquatic insect larvae such as chironomids—along with other small prey and incidental plant and detrital material. Its placement by Greenwood in Gaurochromis, a grouping of robust-jawed insectivores, reflects this benthic-foraging biology. Within Nabugabo's community it occupies the generalist insectivore niche, one of the broad ecological roles into which the Lake Victoria haplochromine flock partitioned itself before the Nile perch invasion collapsed much of that structure.
Mating
Like the rest of the Lake Victoria haplochromine radiation, Haplochromis simpsoni is a maternal mouthbrooder with a polygynandrous, lek-like mating system rather than a pair bond. Detailed courtship has not been described for this particular species, but the genus pattern is well established: males develop bright nuptial colours and display to females, often over a small territory, and the anal-fin egg-spots feature in the spawning ritual. Female mate choice based on male colour is the engine of reproductive isolation in this flock—closely related species that look almost identical to the human eye are kept apart chiefly by these visual signals—which is why turbidity and the loss of clear water (through eutrophication after the ecological upheaval of the lake) are thought to erode the species boundaries themselves. Males contribute only sperm; all parental investment falls to the female.
Breeding
Haplochromis simpsoni is a maternal mouthbrooder: after spawning, the female takes the fertilized eggs into her mouth and broods them there through hatching and the early free-swimming stage, releasing the fry once they are well developed and, in the genus pattern, taking them back into her mouth when threatened. Species-specific clutch counts have not been published for Haplochromis simpsoni, but Lake Victoria–region haplochromines of its size typically produce small clutches on the order of a few dozen comparatively large, yolky eggs (roughly 20–80, genus-typical), a low-fecundity, high-investment strategy characteristic of mouthbrooders. Parental care is entirely by the female, with no male involvement after spawning. FishBase rates the species' resilience as high, with a minimum population doubling time of under fifteen months—consistent with a small, fast-maturing fish—which is part of why remnant populations have been able to rebound when predation pressure eased.
In the aquarium
Haplochromis simpsoni is essentially never kept in the aquarium hobby. It is a single-lake Ugandan endemic of no commercial ornamental interest, it is not exported, and—unlike a handful of charismatic Lake Victoria haplochromines that circulate among specialists (the 'flameback', certain Pundamilia and Astatotilapia) —it has no established presence in the trade. There is accordingly no body of hobbyist husbandry experience specific to this fish, and any keeping notes would be pure extrapolation from its better-known relatives. For the sake of completeness: Victoria-region haplochromines as a group are robust, soft-to-medium hard, warm-water (roughly 75–81 °F, pH 7–8.5) mouthbrooders that are best kept in groups with a surplus of females to spread male aggression, over open sand with rockwork, and that breed readily—but applying that template to Haplochromis simpsoni specifically would be guesswork, and the honest statement is that it is a wild conservation subject rather than an aquarium fish. Anyone genuinely interested in Lake Victoria haplochromines in captivity should work with the established, identified hobby strains rather than seek out an endangered single-lake endemic.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Haplochromis simpsoni as Endangered (criteria A1ace, B1+2cd), assessed on 1 August 1996 by L. Kaufman; the listing has not been re-evaluated since, so the category is now decades old. The threat is the textbook Lake Victoria–basin story: the introduction of the predatory Nile perch (Lates niloticus) into Nabugabo, together with eutrophication, drove roughly half of the lake's indigenous fish species out of the open water, and many haplochromines—simpsoni among them—survived only by retreating into the hypoxic, vegetated wetland margins that Nile perch avoid. There is, however, a hopeful coda specific to Nabugabo: as Nile perch were intensively fished down through the 1990s, a documented resurgence followed, and 'Gaurochromis simpsoni' was among the haplochromine species recorded returning to inshore and offshore waters by 2000 (Chapman et al., Conservation Biology). The species' long-term fate is tied to that of its single small lake—to Nile perch pressure, to water clarity, and to the integrity of the surrounding swamp—and its outdated assessment should be read against the basin-wide collapse and partial recovery of the Lake Victoria–region cichlid flock as a whole.
