Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Haplochromis velifer is a small maternal mouthbrooding cichlid found only in Lake Nabugabo, a shallow sand-dammed satellite of Lake Victoria in Uganda, where it works the muddy and sandy bottoms of inshore bays for insect larvae. Described by Ethelwynn Trewavas in 1933 and named 'sail-bearing' for its tall fins, it is one of the Nabugabo endemics that partly survived the Nile perch invasion, and it is listed by the IUCN as Vulnerable.

Taxonomy & naming

Haplochromis velifer was described by the British ichthyologist Ethelwynn Trewavas in 1933, in her account of the cichlid fishes collected during the Cambridge Expedition to the East African lakes of 1930-1931 (Journal of the Linnean Society, Zoology, vol. 38, p. 322). The type series came entirely from Lake Nabugabo, Uganda: the holotype is held at the Natural History Museum, London (BMNH 1933.2.23.194), alongside a series of thirteen paratypes (BMNH 1933.2.23.181-193). Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats the name as valid as Haplochromis velifer Trewavas 1933, in the cichlid subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae. Peter Humphry Greenwood redescribed the species in his 1965 monograph 'The cichlid fishes of Lake Nabugabo, Uganda', the foundational treatment of that lake's endemic flock. In his long effort to break the catch-all genus Haplochromis into smaller natural units, Greenwood later (1980) transferred the species to Astatotilapia, the lineage of small, generalised, riverine-derived haplochromines that seeded the Victoria-region radiations; some databases accordingly carry it as Astatotilapia velifer. Because that wider reclassification of the Lake Victoria 'superflock' remains unsettled and is not consistently applied, this atlas keeps the long-familiar Haplochromis heading while noting the modern placement. The Lake Victoria, Nabugabo, Kyoga and Edward-George haplochromines together form one of the most explosively speciated vertebrate assemblages known, and velifer is one of its Nabugabo members.

Morphology

Haplochromis velifer is a small cichlid; the largest recorded specimen measured about 4.5 in in standard length (snout to tail base), and most fish are smaller. In overall build it is a typical Lake Victoria-region haplochromine: a moderately deep, laterally compressed body, a fairly large head and a terminal mouth suited to picking small prey off the bottom. The epithet velifer, Latin for 'sail-bearing', points to the feature Trewavas singled out in naming it: well-developed, tall median fins that give the fish a sail-like profile when the dorsal is raised. As in nearly all haplochromines of this group, the sexes differ in colour and finnage: breeding males are the more colourful sex and carry egg-spots (ocelli) on the anal fin that figure in spawning, while females and non-breeding fish are plainer and more cryptically marked. Detailed colour-in-life notes are sparse in the literature, the species having been documented mainly from preserved museum material and field surveys rather than from aquarium observation; Fryer and Iles (1972) recorded its colour pattern among the Nabugabo cichlids. Precise meristic and colour diagnostics rest on Trewavas's original description and Greenwood's 1965 revision.

Habitat

Haplochromis velifer is endemic to Lake Nabugabo, a small, shallow freshwater lake in southern Uganda lying just west of Lake Victoria's western shore. Nabugabo is a 'satellite' of Lake Victoria in the truest sense: sediment cores indicate it was cut off from the main lake only about 5,500 years ago, when a rising sandbar dammed a former bay. In that short geological span its haplochromines have diverged enough to be recognised as distinct endemic species, making the lake a natural laboratory for very recent cichlid evolution. Within Nabugabo, velifer is a bottom-associated (benthopelagic) fish recorded both close inshore and some distance out, over muddy and sandy bottoms in sheltered bays and over clear sandy beaches. The lake is shallow and tannin-stained, fringed by extensive papyrus and wetland; FishBase carries no published depth band for the species, but Nabugabo itself is a shallow basin (only a few metres deep over most of its area), so the fish lives within roughly the upper few metres of the water column. Equatorial surface waters of this kind are warm year-round, on the order of 24-27 degrees Celsius, circumneutral to mildly alkaline (pH roughly 7.0-8.5), and soft to moderately mineralised.

Feeding

Haplochromis velifer is an omnivorous bottom feeder. The diet, as recorded by Greenwood (1965) and Fryer and Iles (1972), is dominated by aquatic insect larvae, especially chironomids (non-biting midge larvae) and trichopterans (caddisfly larvae), taken from the muddy and sandy substrates it patrols. FishBase places it at a trophic level of about 3.2, consistent with an insectivore-leaning omnivore rather than a specialist of any one resource. This generalised, soft-bottom invertebrate-picking habit is typical of the Astatotilapia-grade haplochromines from which the Victoria-region flocks descended, and contrasts with the many narrowly specialised feeding guilds (algae-scrapers, mollusc-crushers, fish-eaters, scale-eaters, paedophages) that the larger radiations evolved. In the Nabugabo community, velifer functions as one of the benthic insectivores converting bottom-dwelling invertebrate production into prey for larger predators.

Mating

Detailed courtship behaviour has not been described for Haplochromis velifer specifically, but its reproductive biology follows the well-known and highly conserved pattern of the Lake Victoria-region haplochromines. These are polygynous maternal mouthbrooders with no pair bond: males establish and defend small temporary territories, advertise to females with intensified breeding colour and lateral display, and quiver and lead ripe females through a spawning circling. The anal-fin egg-spots of the male play a role in this exchange, drawing the female to mouth at the male's fin during spawning so that her eggs are fertilised inside or near her mouth. The female alone selects mates and provides all parental care; males contribute only sperm and a display arena. Social structure outside spawning is loose and shoaling rather than strongly territorial.

Breeding

Haplochromis velifer is a maternal (ovophile) mouthbrooder, as FishBase records simply as 'mouthbrooder'. Spawning has not been documented in detail for this species, but in the Victoria-region haplochromines the female takes the eggs into her mouth almost as they are laid, broods the developing clutch in her buccal cavity through hatching, and continues to shelter the free-swimming fry there, taking them back in at any threat for a period after they begin to forage. Clutch sizes in these small haplochromines are modest — congeners of comparable size typically carry on the order of a few dozen relatively large, yolk-rich eggs (roughly 20-60), a small-clutch, high-investment strategy that trades fecundity for the protection of mouthbrooding. No specific fecundity count has been published for velifer, so this figure should be read as a genus-typical estimate rather than a measured value. The female receives no help from the male, and there is no nest or substrate guarding. Because the entire brood is carried internally, reproduction is independent of any particular spawning substrate, which is part of why these fish persist in disturbed and predator-rich settings.

In the aquarium

Haplochromis velifer is essentially not an aquarium fish. It is a small, plainly coloured Lake Nabugabo endemic known almost entirely from scientific collections and survey work, and it has no established presence in the ornamental trade; it is not bred or sold in the hobby in any meaningful way. The few Victoria-region haplochromines that are kept (mostly more colourful 'Haplochromis' species maintained by specialist and conservation-minded aquarists) give a fair guide to what this fish would need: a warm tank around 24-27 degrees Celsius, hard, alkaline water near pH 7.5-8.5, a sand bottom for its bottom-feeding habit, and the polygynous mouthbrooder's standard social arrangement of one male to several females to spread his attention. Like its relatives it would be an active, occasionally pugnacious fish best kept in a species or carefully chosen Lake Victoria community tank. In practice, however, anyone seeking a Victoria-basin haplochromine for the aquarium would be working with one of the species actually in cultivation, not this one. The realistic role for velifer is as a subject of conservation and field study rather than home aquaria.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Haplochromis velifer as Vulnerable (criteria A1ae, B1+2c), assessed in 1996 by L. Kaufman, with Uganda as its only range country. The driver behind that listing is the ecological catastrophe of the Lake Victoria basin: the introduction and explosive increase of the predatory Nile perch (Lates niloticus), together with eutrophication and fishing pressure, drove a mass decline of the region's endemic haplochromines through the late twentieth century, and Lake Nabugabo — which also received Nile perch — lost roughly half of its indigenous fish species. Crucially, however, Nabugabo's structurally complex wetland and papyrus-fringed inshore margins acted as refugia: a body of work by Chapman, Ogutu-Ohwayo, Kaufman and colleagues documented that many Nabugabo haplochromines survived by retreating into these vegetated ecotones where Nile perch could not effectively hunt, and that several have since resurged as Nile perch numbers fell. As one of these surviving Nabugabo endemics, velifer is precisely the kind of narrow-range species whose fate hinges on the continued protection of those inshore wetland refuges. Its entire global population lives in a single small lake, so localized threats — wetland clearance, pollution, or renewed predator pressure — carry outsized risk, which is what the Vulnerable listing reflects. The 1996 assessment is now dated and a reassessment would be valuable.
