Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Taxonomy & naming

The species was described in 1998 by Ole Seehausen and Niels Bouton, in the landmark monograph 'Mbipi, the rock-dwelling cichlids of Lake Victoria: description of three new genera and fifteen new species' (Seehausen, Lippitsch, Bouton & Zwennes, Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters 9(2):129–228). The original combination was Lithochromis xanthopteryx, and Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes still treats Lithochromis xanthopteryx (Seehausen & Bouton, 1998) as the valid name; the genus Lithochromis was erected by Lippitsch & Seehausen in the same work for a cluster of red- and yellow-finned rock cichlids. As with most of the Lake Victoria flock, the fish is also widely catalogued under the catch-all genus Haplochromis, which the atlas retains as its heading; the radiation's generic boundaries remain unsettled, and many authors keep these mbipi species in Haplochromis pending a comprehensive revision. The holotype (RMNH 33434) and a long series of paratypes are held at the Naturalis collection in Leiden (formerly RMNH) and at TAFIRI in Tanzania. The type locality is Capri Point in the Mwanza Gulf, Lake Victoria, Tanzania, from 10–13 ft depth. No junior synonyms are recognised. The specific epithet, 'yellow-finned', singles out the bright-yellow anal fin of breeding males.

Morphology

This is a small cichlid: the type series reaches about 3.5 in standard length, and FishBase lists a maximum of 4 in SL, so a large adult is roughly the length of a finger. The body is fusiform and laterally compressed in the typical haplochromine mould, with a moderately sloping head. Meristics from the original description give 15–16 dorsal spines and 9–10 dorsal soft rays, 3 anal spines and 9–10 anal soft rays, and 29–31 vertebrae. The diagnostic feature is colour, and it is sexually dimorphic. Nuptial males are largely steely metallic blue over the head and flanks, crossed by the dark vertical bars common to many Mwanza Gulf mbipi, and carry a conspicuous bright-yellow anal fin — the trait that gives the species its name — often with yellow suffusing the soft dorsal and the ventral body. Females and non-territorial males are far plainer, a cryptic yellowish- to greyish-brown that blends with the rock. Like other haplochromines the males bear ocelli ('egg spots') on the anal fin, which play a role in the mouthbrooding spawning sequence.

Habitat

Haplochromis xanthopteryx is a rock specialist with a very small range, endemic to the steeply sloping eastern side of the northern Mwanza Gulf in southern Lake Victoria, Tanzania. It is abundant at rocky outcrops from the Gabalema Islands in the north to Butimba Point in the south, and becomes scarcer at the Nyegezi rocks at the southern edge of its range. Within that range it is strictly tied to large, very steeply sloping boulders, where it occupies the immediately inshore slope between about 0.5 and at least 16 ft depth, living in the crevices between boulders and in rock pools within emergent reefs — exactly the 'mbipi' (Kiswahili for the rocks) habitat for which Seehausen named this guild. Lake Victoria's surface waters are warm and mildly alkaline: temperatures over the shallow rocky inshore typically run around 73–81 °F and pH is on the basic side of neutral, broadly 7.2–9.0, reflecting the lake's hard, well-buffered water. Water clarity is the parameter that matters most here, because the rock cichlids' colour-based mate recognition depends on it, and the gulf has lost much of its former transparency to eutrophication.

Feeding

The species is a generalist of the rocky inshore rather than a narrow specialist. Stomach-content analysis of males in the original study found a seasonally variable diet that included aquatic insect larvae, filamentous blue-green algae (Cyanophyta), bryozoans, prawns, detritus and even juvenile fish — a broad, opportunistic intake drawn from the epilithic 'aufwuchs' community and the crevices it forages. FishBase places it at a trophic level of about 3.1, consistent with a fish that takes a mixture of small invertebrates, algal material and the occasional small vertebrate prey. In the densely packed mbipi community, where dozens of rock cichlids partition the same boulders, this flexible omnivory lets it exploit whatever the season offers along the inshore slope.

Mating

Like the rest of the Lake Victoria rock cichlids, Haplochromis xanthopteryx is a polygynous maternal mouthbrooder, and reproduction is built around male colour and territory rather than a pair bond. Territorial males develop the full steely-blue-and-yellow nuptial dress and defend small stations among the boulders, where they court passing females with the lateral displays and quivering typical of haplochromines. This is the heart of the mbipi story that made these fish famous in evolutionary biology: females choose mates largely by male colour, and that visual mate choice keeps closely related, otherwise-interfertile species reproductively isolated on the same reef. The system only works in clear water — Seehausen and colleagues showed that where turbidity rises, females can no longer discriminate colours, mate choice breaks down, and distinct forms hybridise. The bright yellow anal fin of the male is part of that signalling apparatus.

Breeding

Breeding has not been described in detail for this particular species, but it follows the well-known Lake Victoria haplochromine pattern, and FishBase records it explicitly as a polygynous female mouthbrooder with maternal parental care. After a male fertilises the eggs at his territory, the female takes the clutch into her mouth and broods it there; the male contributes no parental care. Egg-spots on the male's anal fin feature in the spawning sequence, encouraging the female to nip at them and so draw milt into her mouth to fertilise the eggs she is already carrying. Clutches in comparably sized Lake Victoria rock cichlids are small — on the order of a few dozen eggs (roughly 20–60) — and the female mouthbroods the developing young for around three weeks before releasing free-swimming fry, with no biparental cave or substrate phase. The small clutch and prolonged oral incubation are the classic trade-off of mouthbrooding: few eggs, but each heavily protected.

In the aquarium

Haplochromis xanthopteryx is essentially an ichthyologist's and conservation fish rather than a hobby staple — it is rarely kept, almost never offered in the general trade, and most aquarium-held Lake Victoria 'Haplochromis' are other, hardier species. There is no established body of husbandry literature specific to it, so any keeping advice is extrapolated from the broader Victorian mbipi group maintained in conservation and specialist aquaria. By that analogy it would want a hard, alkaline tank (pH on the order of 7.5–8.5) at roughly 75–81 °F, with a robust pile of rockwork providing crevices and clear lines of sight for territorial males, over a sand base. As a polygynous mouthbrooder it is best kept as one male with several females so that male aggression and courtship are spread among the group; lone pairs tend to go badly. Like its relatives it would take prepared foods readily but should not be fed a diet heavy in mammalian protein. The single most important and most easily overlooked requirement is water clarity: these fish evolved under clear water and their colour, behaviour and reproductive isolation all depend on good light penetration, so strong filtration and a tank kept genuinely clear matter more for this group than for most cichlids. Anyone keeping it should treat it as a species-tank conservation subject and avoid mixing it with congeners it could hybridise with.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Haplochromis xanthopteryx as Vulnerable under criterion D2 (Witte, Brooks & de Zeeuw; assessment published 2010), the category reflecting a very small range that could be driven to a threatened state by a single human impact. The fish is endemic to the eastern shore of the northern Mwanza Gulf and to nothing else, which by itself makes it precarious. The assessment names two specific pressures. The first, and most insidious for a rock cichlid, is hybridisation driven by falling water transparency: eutrophication of the gulf — fed by nutrient run-off and intensified by the Nile perch's reshaping of the food web — has clouded the water, undermining the colour-based mate choice that keeps these species distinct, so that decreased visibility erodes the species from within. The second is direct capture in the long-line and trap fisheries that work the gulf. The wider Lake Victoria context is sobering: the introduced Nile perch (Lates niloticus), eutrophication and the spread of water hyacinth together drove one of the most dramatic vertebrate extinction events of the twentieth century, with a large share of the lake's endemic haplochromine flock lost or imperilled. Within that crisis, a clear-water-dependent, single-gulf endemic like this one sits squarely among the vulnerable.
