Taxonomy & naming

Labrochromis ptistes was described by Peter Humphry Greenwood and Cornelis D. N. Barel in 1978, in Part VIII of Greenwood's long-running 'Revision of the Lake Victoria Haplochromis species' (Bulletin of the British Museum (Natural History), Zoology, vol. 33). The type series came from the Speke Gulf, northeast of Tefu Island in the Tanzanian south of Lake Victoria, taken at a depth of about 28 metres; the holotype (BMNH 1977.1.10.60) and nine paratypes (BMNH 1977.1.10.61-69) are held in the Natural History Museum, London. Two years later Greenwood (1980), in his attempt to dismantle the unwieldy catch-all genus Haplochromis into smaller phyletic units, reassigned the species to Labrochromis Regan, 1920 — the genus he reserved for the lake's specialised pharyngeal snail-crushers — so that the valid combination in the Catalog of Fishes is now Labrochromis ptistes, a placement confirmed by the recent revision of Mahulu & Seehausen (2025). That generic split has never been universally adopted in the hobby or in much of the literature, and the Atlas keeps the conventional Haplochromis heading under which the fish was described and is still widely catalogued, while noting that Labrochromis ptistes is the same animal. It belongs to the spectacular Lake Victoria haplochromine radiation — several hundred very recently diverged, closely related endemic species — within which a small cluster of robust-jawed forms (L. ishmaeli, L. humilior, L. pharyngomylus, L. teegelaari, L. mylergates and ptistes) converged on a mollusc-crushing way of life.

Morphology

Labrochromis ptistes is a modestly sized haplochromine: the documented maximum is about 4 in standard length. The body is the deep-headed, laterally compressed form typical of the flock, with a relatively long head (about 34-38% of standard length in Greenwood & Barel's material) and a fairly short snout. Its defining feature is internal rather than external: like the other Labrochromis snail-crushers, ptistes carries a heavily hypertrophied lower pharyngeal bone bearing broad, flattened molariform teeth — a robust pharyngeal mill built to crack the hard shells of snails and bivalves. This is the structure that gives the fish its name. No detailed published account of its live nuptial coloration survives — the species has scarcely been seen alive since the surveys of the 1970s and 1980s — but, as in essentially all Victorian haplochromines, it would have been sexually dimorphic and dichromatic: territorial males assuming brighter breeding colour and carrying yolk-coloured egg-spots (ocelli) on the anal fin, while females and non-breeding fish stayed drab and cryptic. Fine differences in head proportions, eye size and snout length separate ptistes from its near-identical molluscivore relatives, and these meristic and morphometric details, rather than any single dramatic mark, are how the species is told apart.

Habitat

Labrochromis ptistes is endemic to Lake Victoria, the vast, shallow equatorial lake shared by Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya, and is known only from its type locality in the Speke Gulf region of the Tanzanian sector. There it was an offshore bottom fish: FishBase records it as benthopelagic over an exposed area with a mud bottom, and the type series was collected at roughly 28 metres — deeper than the inshore sand- and rock-dwelling members of the flock. This places it among the demersal, sublittoral haplochromines that worked the soft offshore floor of the lake rather than the shallow margins. Lake Victoria's water is warm and well-buffered: surface temperatures typically run about 23-27 degrees C and the water is alkaline, with pH commonly in the range of roughly 7.2 to 9.0 and moderate hardness — the broad chemical envelope shared by the whole flock rather than figures measured for this species in particular. Its restriction to deeper offshore mud is significant for its fate: those were among the habitats most altered by the lake's late-twentieth-century eutrophication, deoxygenation of bottom water, and the spread of the introduced Nile perch.

Feeding

Labrochromis ptistes is a molluscivore — a pharyngeal snail-crusher. FishBase records it as feeding on molluscs and estimates a trophic level of about 3.6, and its membership in Labrochromis is defined precisely by the trophic apparatus it uses: massively enlarged pharyngeal jaws set with broad molariform teeth that crush the shells of snails (and likely small bivalves) so the soft body can be swallowed and the shell fragments rejected. This is one of several distinct mollusk-eating strategies the Victorian flock evolved; the Labrochromis crushers take their prey whole and process it deep in the throat, in contrast to the 'shellers' that extract snail flesh by other means. The species' own name captures the mechanism: 'ptistes' is Greek for one who winnows or shells grain, applied by Greenwood & Barel to the crushing pharyngeal mill and the effect it has on its molluscan prey. In the functioning pre-perch lake this guild of snail-crushers was an important consumer of the abundant benthic gastropod fauna of the soft offshore bottoms.

Mating

No courtship study specific to Labrochromis ptistes has been published, but its reproductive biology follows the conservative and well-documented haplochromine pattern of the Lake Victoria flock. These cichlids are polygynous and form no lasting pair bond. Mature males establish and defend temporary territories and signal to females with intensified nuptial colour and with the egg-spots on the anal fin; a ripe female visits a displaying male, the pair spawn, and the female alone assumes every subsequent parental duty. Across the hundreds of species of the radiation, competition among males for display sites combined with female choice on male colour is thought to be the engine of the flock's explosive speciation — which is part of why the loss of clear-water visual conditions during the lake's eutrophication was so damaging to these fishes. For an offshore, deeper-water species like ptistes the specifics of where and how it displayed were never recorded before its decline.

Breeding

Labrochromis ptistes is a maternal (female) mouthbrooder, as FishBase records and as is the rule throughout the Lake Victoria haplochromines. After spawning the female takes the fertilised eggs into her mouth and broods them there; the egg-spots on the male's anal fin are part of the spawning sequence by which fertilisation is achieved close to her mouth. She carries the developing eggs and then the larvae through to free-swimming young without feeding while she broods, and continues to shelter the fry in her mouth at the first sign of danger for some time after they can swim. No clutch count has been published for ptistes specifically; Victorian haplochromines of this body size typically carry only modest broods — on the order of a few dozen eggs (commonly around 20-80) — a low fecundity offset by the high survival that intensive maternal mouthbrooding buys. There is no paternal care, and the species has never, as far as the record shows, been bred in captivity.

In the aquarium

Labrochromis ptistes is not an aquarium fish in any practical sense. It is a scientifically obscure, deeper-water snail-crusher known only from its type locality, with no trade history and no presence in the hobby; unlike the handful of brightly coloured Victorian haplochromines that circulate among specialist keepers (sometimes as conservation 'ark' populations), ptistes has no following and, given that it may already be extinct in the wild, no realistic source. Nothing here should be read as a husbandry recommendation. If it were ever maintained, it would need what the Victorian haplochromines as a group require: hard, alkaline water (pH around 7.5-8.5) at roughly 24-27 degrees C, a spacious, structured tank for the genus's territorial polygynous males with several females per male to spread aggression, and — for a dedicated molluscivore — a diet incorporating shelled snails so the specialised pharyngeal jaws are used and worn as intended. Its interest is as a wild component of Lake Victoria's shattered flock rather than as a fish for the home aquarium.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Labrochromis ptistes as Critically Endangered (Possibly Extinct) under criterion C2a(ii) (assessed 31 March 2010 by F. Witte, M. P. de Zeeuw and E. Brooks), with a decreasing population trend. The 'Possibly Extinct' tag reflects that the species has not been reliably recorded since the catastrophic changes that overtook the lake. From the late 1970s the upsurge of the introduced Nile perch (Lates niloticus), a large predator, combined with severe eutrophication, falling water clarity and the deoxygenation of deeper bottom water, drove the collapse of the Lake Victoria haplochromine flock; quantitative trawl data from the Mwanza and Speke Gulf regions (Witte, van Oijen and colleagues) documented the disappearance of a large fraction of the endemic species, with estimates of 200 or more taxa lost or pushed to local extinction. The IUCN lists fishing pressure, the invasive Nile perch, and domestic, industrial and agricultural pollution among the threats. As an offshore, deeper-water snail-crusher dependent on soft bottoms and benthic molluscs, ptistes was exposed both to the loss of oxygenated bottom habitat and to perch predation, and it is among the Victorian endemics for which the most recent surveys offer little hope. While some haplochromines have shown a partial, altered recovery as perch stocks were fished down, this species has not resurfaced in the published record.
