Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Lethrinops longipinnis is a sand-sifting haplochromine cichlid endemic to the southern part of Lake Malawi, described by David Eccles and Digby Lewis in 1978 during their taxonomic study of the genus. Its name — 'long fin' — marks the elongate pectoral fins that distinguish it. It ranges across open sandy bottoms over a wide span of depth, from about 98 ft down to well over 328 ft, where it mines the substrate for insect larvae and other soft invertebrates.

Taxonomy & naming

Lethrinops longipinnis was described in 1978 by David H. Eccles and Digby S. C. Lewis as part of their taxonomic study of the genus Lethrinops from Lake Malawi, work that brought new order to a difficult assemblage and added several species. The genus itself had been erected in 1922 by Charles Tate Regan, with Chromis lethrinus Günther, 1894 (now Lethrinops lethrinus) as its type species; Regan coined Lethrinops for the resemblance of that fish to the marine emperors of the genus Lethrinus. The specific epithet longipinnis, from Latin longus ('long') and pinna ('fin'), refers to the elongate pectoral fins of the species, the feature picked out in the description and reiterated by Eccles and Trewavas in their 1989 revision of the Malawian haplochromine genera. FishBase records among its diagnostic features fine pharyngeal teeth (some enlarged), a caudal-peduncle depth around 12.7% of standard length and a head length around 37% of standard length. Lethrinops belongs to the tribe Haplochromini within the subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae and comprises roughly twenty-two described species plus many undescribed forms, all sediment-sifting cichlids endemic to the Lake Malawi system. The species carries no settled English common name, so none is asserted here.

Morphology

Lethrinops longipinnis is a moderately elongate, laterally compressed cichlid of the sand-sifting build, distinguished by the long pectoral fins that give it its name. FishBase lists a maximum size of about 6.5 in standard length, with length at first maturity estimated near 6.5 in, placing it among the medium-sized members of the genus. Its pharyngeal teeth are described as fine, with some enlarged, suiting the handling of small, soft prey; the slender caudal peduncle (about 12.7% of standard length) and proportionally long head (about 37% of standard length) are among the measurements that separate it from its congeners. As with most Lethrinops the everyday coloration is plain and silvery, and detailed published notes on live nuptial colour are limited, since the species is known mainly from preserved and trawl-caught material. By analogy with better-documented relatives, breeding males would be expected to develop some iridescent flush during courtship while females and non-breeding fish remain silvery, but this is inferred from the genus rather than recorded for longipinnis. In practice the elongate pectorals, fine pharyngeal dentition, and body proportions are the working means of telling it apart from the many similar sand-dwelling Lethrinops.

Habitat

The species is endemic to Lake Malawi (Lake Nyasa / Lago Niassa), the great rift lake shared by Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania, and within it is confined to the southern part of the lake. It is a fish of open sandy areas across a broad depth range: FishBase gives about 98–459 ft, usually 98–230 ft — spanning the deeper sand shelves and slopes rather than the shallow, sun-lit sand of the inshore zone. This makes longipinnis one of the deeper-ranging sand-dwellers of the genus, overlapping the territory of the offshore Lethrinops while remaining tied to sandy rather than muddy substrate. The surrounding lake water is warm, hard and alkaline at the surface — roughly 75–82 °F with a pH generally between about 7.7 and 8.6 — though over much of its depth range the water is cooler and more stable, below the warm, wind-mixed surface layer. The sandy bottoms it occupies support the buried invertebrate fauna it feeds on.

Feeding

Lethrinops longipinnis is a benthic, sand-sifting invertivore that works the substrate rather than grazing rock or chasing open water. FishBase records it feeding on insect larvae and other soft invertebrates in open sandy areas at depth, obtained in the genus-typical way: dropping the protrusible mouth to the sand, taking in a mouthful of substrate, and sorting the edible fraction across the gill rakers while expelling clean sand through the gill openings. Its fine pharyngeal teeth suit the handling of small, soft-bodied prey such as chironomid larvae. FishBase places the species at a trophic level near 3.4, a little above many of its congeners, consistent with a diet of small invertebrate prey. Ranging over sandy bottoms across a wide span of depth, longipinnis exploits a broad slice of the lake's benthic invertebrate community, part of the fine partitioning of substrate and prey that allows so many Lethrinops to coexist in Lake Malawi.

Mating

Direct observations of courtship in Lethrinops longipinnis are limited, but by the consistent biology of the genus and the wider Lake Malawi haplochromine flock it is expected to be a polygynous maternal mouthbrooder. Males establish and defend temporary spawning sites on the bottom and court passing females with display and heightened nuptial colour, leading a receptive female onto the site to spawn; many sand-dwelling Lethrinops build a low sand mound or shallow bower as the spawning arena, though whether longipinnis does so across the depths it occupies is unrecorded. What can be stated is the general pattern shared across the genus — site-holding, displaying males competing for the attention of females that choose where to spawn — rather than fine detail specific to this species, which has not been observed in the wild during the breeding season.

Breeding

Reproduction in Lethrinops longipinnis has not been documented directly, but it almost certainly follows the maternal-mouthbrooding pattern universal to Lake Malawi's haplochromine cichlids. After spawning on the male's territory, the female takes the fertilised eggs into her mouth, where they are incubated and the larvae sheltered until the fry are free-swimming; the male provides no parental care beyond defending a spawning site during courtship. Specific clutch counts for the species have not been published, but as a medium-sized sand-dwelling Lethrinops it is likely to carry a modest brood — on the order of a few dozen eggs and fry rather than the hundreds laid by open-substrate spawners, the trade-off for the protection mouthbrooding confers. FishBase's estimate of length at first maturity near 6.5 in indicates that the species reproduces only at close to its maximum recorded size, consistent with a relatively long-lived, slow-maturing benthic fish.

In the aquarium

Lethrinops longipinnis is not an established aquarium fish. As a deeper-ranging, largely trawl-caught endemic of the southern lake it has no real presence in the hobby, no settled trade name, and no body of keeping or breeding experience specific to it. Any husbandry notes are extrapolated from sand-sifting Lethrinops generally and should be read as such.

Were the species kept, it would need the same essentials as its shallow-water relatives: a large tank with a deep bed of fine sand covering the whole footprint, so the fish can drive its jaws into the substrate and sift it; plenty of open bottom space; and only sparing rockwork. Water chemistry would have to match the lake — temperature around 75–79 °F (a deeper-water fish would likely prefer the cooler end), pH 7.7–8.6, and hard, alkaline, well-oxygenated water maintained with strong filtration and regular partial water changes. Sinking foods it could sort from the sand — frozen bloodworm, Mysis and similar — would suit its habits, while high-fat, high-protein meaty feeds should be avoided because of the ever-present risk of Malawi bloat, the rapidly fatal digestive illness that follows poor water quality and unsuitable feeding. Suitable tankmates would be other peaceful, similarly sized Malawi cichlids rather than aggressive mbuna. In practice, the depth from which it is taken and its scarcity in collection make it a fish to know about rather than one to keep.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Lethrinops longipinnis as Least Concern (assessed 20 June 2018), on the basis that it is a Lake Malawi endemic that is widespread in the southern lake without identified threats sufficient to qualify it for a higher category. That status should be read against the usual qualifications for a deeper-ranging Malawi cichlid. As a sandy-bottom species spanning depths worked by both inshore seines and the trawl fisheries of the deeper lake, it overlaps significantly with fishing effort, so localised fishing pressure is a real if not yet population-level concern. More broadly, Lake Malawi faces mounting catchment pressures — sedimentation and nutrient loading from deforestation and agriculture, intensifying fisheries, and warming-driven changes in mixing and deep-water oxygenation documented in the lake's fisheries and limnology literature. None of these is recorded as an imminent danger to this particular species, but they form the backdrop against which the long-term prospects of a deeper-ranging, locally harvested lacustrine endemic should be judged.
