Aquascape & setup

Hard, alkaline, well-buffered water of the kind that defines Lake Malawi — stability matters more than chasing a single number.

Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Placidochromis boops is a small, large-eyed deep-water cichlid endemic to the southern part of Lake Malawi, described in 2004 by Mark Hanssens in his revision of the lake's deep-living Placidochromis. It lives at depths of roughly 75 to 125 metres, far below diving range, in the dim middle layers of the lake. Its name — Greek for 'cow-eyed' — captures the conspicuously large eyes that fit a life in low light.

Taxonomy & naming

Placidochromis boops was described in 2004 by the Belgian ichthyologist Mark Hanssens, in his chapter 'The deep-water Placidochromis species' (pages 104-197) in The Cichlid Diversity of Lake Malawi/Nyasa/Niassa: Identification, Distribution and Taxonomy, edited by Jos Snoeks and published by Cichlid Press — the monograph that named most of the lake's deep-water Placidochromis at once. The genus Placidochromis was established by Digby Lewis in 1982 for Malawi haplochromines of calm, unspecialised form; it sits in the tribe Haplochromini, subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae, within the lake's great radiation of non-mbuna 'hap' cichlids. Catalog of Fishes lists it as valid — Placidochromis boops Hanssens, 2004 — with FishBase SpecCode 62390. The epithet boops comes from the Greek bo-opis, 'cow-eyed' or 'ox-eyed,' referring to the species' large eyes; it is the same classical word that gives the marine bogue (Boops boops) its name, and in both cases it marks an enlarged eye. Large eyes are a recurring adaptation in deep-water fishes, gathering what little light reaches their habitat.

Morphology

Placidochromis boops is a small, fusiform cichlid, reaching about 4.5 in standard length (FishBase). Its standout feature is a notably large eye — the trait Hanssens named it for. FishBase records 14-15 dorsal spines and 10-11 dorsal soft rays, 3 anal spines and 8-9 anal soft rays, and a detailed diagnosis of body proportions: head length about 37.9-39.8% of standard length, body depth 34.9-37.7%, snout length 30.8-35.3% of head length, lower jaw 42.6-46.0% of head length, with 16-19 gill-rakers on the lower limb of the first arch. As with the rest of the deep-water group, live coloration is muted and largely lost in preservation, and the species is documented chiefly from preserved, trawled adults rather than from observed living fish, so breeding dress and sexual dimorphism are not well recorded. In build it is a compact, big-eyed open-water and sand hap suited to dim depths.

Habitat

The species is endemic to Lake Malawi and occurs in the southern part of the lake, in Malawian waters. FishBase gives a depth range of about 74 to 125 metres, placing boops among the deeper-living Placidochromis — well below the lit, oxygen-rich shallows, in the dim middle layers over soft sediment. Lake Malawi is permanently stratified, with anoxic water in its greatest depths, so the deep-water cichlids are confined to a band of intermediate depth between the productive surface and the lifeless bottom. The large eyes of boops are a direct fit to this low-light world. As a southern deep-water endemic it shares its habitat with a number of other deep Placidochromis and deep-water haps, a community that is difficult to survey and remains comparatively poorly known.

Feeding

No dedicated dietary study has been published for Placidochromis boops. Placidochromis are generally invertebrate-feeders and generalist micropredators, and the deep-water members are presumed to forage over soft sediment for benthic invertebrates and other small prey. FishBase estimates a trophic level of about 3.3 for boops, derived from its size and the ecology of close relatives — a value consistent with a small benthic invertivore rather than a piscivore or herbivore. Its large eyes suggest reliance on vision to detect prey or movement in very low light, but the specifics of its diet are inferred from the genus and habitat rather than recorded from stomach contents or direct observation.

Mating

Courtship and spawning behaviour have not been described for Placidochromis boops. As a Lake Malawi haplochromine it is confidently expected to be a maternal mouthbrooder: males court receptive females with displays, the female takes the fertilised eggs into her mouth, and no lasting pair bond forms. Whether the deep-water Placidochromis defend display sites on the sediment or spawn over open bottom is undocumented, and in the deep, dim southern waters the elaborate visual signalling of shallow Malawi cichlids is presumably reduced — though the species' large eyes might let visual cues remain useful at depth. What can be stated is only the general pattern the genus and the wider flock make near-certain: a brief, polygynous, female-mouthbrooding system rather than anything observed in boops itself.

Breeding

There is no published account of spawning, clutch size or fry development specific to Placidochromis boops. By the consistent biology of Malawi haplochromines, it is a maternal mouthbrooder: the female incubates a modest clutch of large, yolky eggs in her buccal cavity for around three weeks, then releases free-swimming fry and continues to shelter them in her mouth for a short time when threatened. Comparable small haps carry clutches of a few tens to roughly a hundred eggs. None of these figures has been measured for boops, which has not been bred in captivity or studied for reproduction in the wild; the account here is extrapolated from the genus and the broader mouthbrooding flock rather than recorded for the species.

In the aquarium

Placidochromis boops is not part of the aquarium hobby. It is a deep-water southern endemic known from trawled specimens rather than live collection, with no hobby name, husbandry literature or breeding record; any keeping notes can only be generic to the genus.

The Placidochromis that aquarists keep are shallow-water species — chiefly Placidochromis electra and Placidochromis phenochilus — managed as relatively peaceful, sand-associated Malawi haps in spacious aquaria with a deep sand bed, hard alkaline water (pH around 7.8-8.6, moderately hard) and temperatures in the mid-20s Celsius, alongside other non-aggressive haps. A deep-water, large-eyed species like boops, adapted to cool, dim, comparatively low-oxygen depths, would be a far more demanding and unrealistic subject, and is not in the trade. This is a fish of scientific rather than aquarium interest.

Conservation

Placidochromis boops was assessed by the IUCN in 2018 and listed as Least Concern, indicating that on present evidence the assessors did not consider it at appreciable risk of extinction within its southern-lake range. It nonetheless remains a deep-water species whose populations are difficult to monitor, and the lake-wide pressures on Lake Malawi apply to it: intensive artisanal and commercial fishing, sedimentation from catchment deforestation, and a gradually expanding deoxygenated deep layer that squeezes the habitable depth band these fish occupy. Deep trawling can disturb the benthic communities that deep cichlids depend on. The Least Concern listing reflects the species' apparent distribution rather than detailed population data, so continued attention to deep-water fishing pressure and water-quality trends in the southern lake remains sensible.
