Taxonomy & naming
Placidochromis chilolae was described in 2004 by the Belgian ichthyologist Mark Hanssens, in his monographic chapter 'The deep-water Placidochromis species' (pages 104-197) in Jos Snoeks's edited volume The Cichlid Diversity of Lake Malawi/Nyasa/Niassa: Identification, Distribution and Taxonomy (Cichlid Press, El Paso). That one work named a large cohort of deep-living Placidochromis at a stroke, and chilolae was among them. The genus Placidochromis was erected by Digby Lewis in 1982 for Malawi haplochromines of generally calm, unspecialised appearance; it sits in the tribe Haplochromini of the subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae and belongs to the vast non-mbuna 'hap' radiation of sand- and open-water cichlids. Catalog of Fishes records it as a valid species, Placidochromis chilolae Hanssens, 2004, a status reaffirmed by Konings (2016); its FishBase SpecCode is 62388. The epithet is a toponym: chilolae refers to Chilola Bay, the Mozambican locality from which the type series was trawled. Within Hanssens's informal morphological groupings of the deep-water Placidochromis, the species is separated from its neighbours by a suite of proportional measurements and meristic counts rather than by any single dramatic feature.
Morphology
Placidochromis chilolae is a small cichlid, reaching about 3 in standard length (FishBase) — one of the more diminutive members of the deep-water Placidochromis group. It has the fusiform, moderately compressed body typical of these sand- and open-water haps, and like the rest of the deep-water cohort it is diagnosed mainly on proportional measurements (head, snout, jaw and cheek dimensions expressed as percentages of standard or head length) and on meristic counts, rather than on bold colour. Pigment is muted in these dimly lit fishes and largely lost in preserved material, so the published description rests on form and counts rather than on a vivid colour pattern. The known specimens were taken by trawling and dredging in deep water, meaning the species is documented from preserved adults rather than from living, fully coloured fish; notes on breeding coloration and on sexual dimorphism are correspondingly thin. In overall build it is a compact, unremarkable deep-water hap rather than a robust predator or a specialised rock-dweller.
Habitat
The species is a Lake Malawi endemic, recorded only from Chilola Bay on the Mozambican (eastern) shore, near Cóbuè, where the type series was collected at depths of 167–187 ft. Like the other deep-water Placidochromis revised by Hanssens, it belongs to a fauna that lives and breeds in the lake's dimly lit deeper layers rather than in the accessible, well-oxygenated shallows familiar to divers and aquarists. These deep habitats lie over and around soft sediment, in subdued light, well below the wave-washed rocky margins. Lake Malawi is permanently stratified, and below roughly 656–820 ft the water is anoxic, so the deep-water cichlid community is squeezed into a band of intermediate depth; chilolae's 164–197 ft range sits comfortably within that lit-but-deep zone. Because the species is known from a single bay, its true range may well be wider than the record suggests — deep-water sampling of Lake Malawi remains patchy — but on present evidence it is a narrowly documented, deep-dwelling Mozambican-shore endemic.
Feeding
No dedicated dietary study has been published for Placidochromis chilolae. Placidochromis as a genus are mostly invertebrate-feeders and generalist micropredators that sift sand and glean small prey, and the deep-water members are thought to forage over soft sediment for benthic invertebrates and other small organisms in the gloom. FishBase places the deep-water Placidochromis at trophic levels around 3.2-3.3, consistent with a diet of small invertebrates rather than fish or plant matter. For chilolae specifically, feeding ecology is inferred from its relatives and its habitat — a small benthic invertivore working the deep sediment surface — rather than recorded from stomach contents or direct observation.
Mating
Courtship and spawning behaviour have not been described for Placidochromis chilolae. Lake Malawi's haplochromine cichlids, including Placidochromis, are overwhelmingly maternal mouthbrooders in which males court females with displays and the female takes the fertilised eggs into her mouth, so chilolae is expected to follow that pattern. In many sand-dwelling haps, males establish temporary display sites on the bottom and attract passing females; whether the deep-water Placidochromis build any kind of spawning arena, or simply pair briefly over open sediment, is not documented. In the perpetual low light of its habitat, visual courtship signals are presumably muted compared with the vivid displays of shallow-water mbuna. What can be said with confidence is only what the genus and the wider flock make near-certain: a brief, polygynous mouthbrooding system rather than pair-bonded biparental care.
Breeding
There is no published account of spawning, clutch size or fry development specific to Placidochromis chilolae. By the consistent biology of Lake Malawi haplochromines, it is a maternal mouthbrooder: the female incubates a relatively small clutch of large, yolky eggs in her buccal cavity for roughly three weeks, releasing fully formed free-swimming fry and continuing to shelter them in her mouth when threatened for a short period afterward. Clutch sizes in comparable small haps run from a few tens to perhaps a hundred eggs. None of this has been measured for chilolae, which has not been bred in captivity or studied in the wild for reproduction; the description here is extrapolated from the genus and the broader Malawi mouthbrooding flock rather than recorded for the species.
In the aquarium
Placidochromis chilolae is essentially absent from the aquarium hobby. It is a deep-water, single-locality endemic known mainly from trawled and dredged specimens, not a fish collected alive for the trade, and it has no established hobby name, husbandry literature or breeding history. Any keeping notes can only be generic to the genus.
The Placidochromis that are kept — chiefly shallow-water species such as Placidochromis electra and Placidochromis phenochilus — are valued as relatively peaceful, sand-sifting haps that do well in spacious aquaria with a deep sand bed, hard alkaline water (pH around 7.8-8.6, moderately hard) and temperatures in the mid-20s Celsius, in the company of other non-aggressive Malawi haps. A deep-water species like chilolae, adapted to cool, dim conditions tens of metres down, would in principle be far more demanding and is not a realistic aquarium subject. The honest summary is that this is a fish of scientific rather than aquarium interest — documented from the lake's depths, but not part of hobby experience.
Conservation
Placidochromis chilolae was assessed by the IUCN in 2018 and listed as Data Deficient — the assessors judged that too little is known about its true range, population and ecology to evaluate its extinction risk, a common verdict for the deep-water, single-locality cichlids of Lake Malawi. Its known restriction to one bay on the Mozambican shore means that, if that record really does reflect a narrow range, it would be inherently vulnerable; but it is at least as likely that the species is simply under-sampled in a habitat that is hard to survey. Lake Malawi as a whole faces well-documented pressures — heavy artisanal and commercial fishing, sedimentation from catchment deforestation, and the slow expansion of the lake's deoxygenated deep layer — and deep-water trawling in particular can affect benthic cichlid communities that have nowhere shallower to retreat. For chilolae, the responsible position is the IUCN's: a poorly known endemic whose status cannot yet be judged, flagged for the kind of targeted deep-water survey that the whole Placidochromis deep-water group needs.
