Aquascape & setup

Hard, alkaline, well-buffered water of the kind that defines Lake Malawi — stability matters more than chasing a single number.

Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Hybridization watchi

Placidochromis communis is a small, very deep-water haplochromine cichlid endemic to Lake Malawi, described in 2004 by Mark Hanssens in his monographic revision of the lake's deep-living Placidochromis. Its type series was trawled from around 476–482 ft in Young's Bay in the north of the lake, among the deepest-dwelling cichlids known. Its name — 'common' — refers not to abundance but to the fish's deliberately unremarkable, generalised appearance, which makes it a sort of baseline against which its more distinctive deep-water relatives are compared.

Taxonomy & naming

Placidochromis communis was described in 2004 by the Belgian ichthyologist Mark Hanssens, in his monographic chapter 'The deep-water Placidochromis species' (pages 104-197) in Jos Snoeks's edited volume The Cichlid Diversity of Lake Malawi/Nyasa/Niassa: Identification, Distribution and Taxonomy (Cichlid Press, El Paso). That single work named a large cohort of deep-living Placidochromis at once, and communis was among them. The genus Placidochromis was erected by Digby Lewis in 1982 for Malawi haplochromines of generally calm, unspecialised appearance; it sits in the tribe Haplochromini of the subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae and belongs to the lake's vast non-mbuna 'hap' radiation. Catalog of Fishes records it as a valid species, Placidochromis communis Hanssens, 2004; its FishBase SpecCode is 62386. The epithet communis is Latin for 'common' or 'general,' chosen to flag the species' unremarkable, generalised morphology rather than any frequency in catches — fittingly, it serves within Hanssens's treatment as a plain reference form against which more specialised deep-water Placidochromis are distinguished by their meristic and proportional details.

Morphology

Placidochromis communis is a small cichlid, reaching about 3 in standard length (FishBase). It has the fusiform, moderately compressed body typical of the deep-water Placidochromis, and — as its name advertises — a deliberately generalised, unremarkable form, lacking the sharply pointed head, enlarged eyes or other specialisations that mark out some of its congeners. The diagnosis therefore rests entirely on a suite of proportional measurements (head, snout, jaw and cheek dimensions as percentages of standard or head length) and meristic counts rather than on bold colour, which is muted in these dimly lit fishes and largely lost in preservation. The known specimens were taken by deep trawling, so the species is documented from preserved adults rather than from living, fully coloured fish; notes on breeding coloration and on sexual dimorphism are correspondingly thin. In overall build it is a compact, plain deep-water hap — a baseline form rather than a striking one.

Habitat

The species is a Lake Malawi endemic. Its type series was trawled in Young's Bay near Chilumba in the north of the lake at a remarkable 476–482 ft, among the deepest records for any Malawi cichlid, and FishBase notes records from both the Malawian and Tanzanian sides of the northern lake. Like the other deep-water Placidochromis revised by Hanssens, communis lives in the lake's dim, cool, deeper layers over and around soft sediment, far below the wave-washed rocky shallows familiar to divers. Lake Malawi is permanently stratified, and below roughly 656–820 ft the water is anoxic, so the deep-water cichlid community is squeezed into a band of intermediate-to-considerable depth; at nearly 492 ft, communis sits near the deep end of that habitable column, in very low light close to the lower limit of the oxygenated zone. The northern basin of the lake is the deepest, and this fish is one of its specialist deep dwellers.

Feeding

No dedicated dietary study has been published for Placidochromis communis. Placidochromis as a genus are mostly invertebrate-feeders and generalist micropredators that sift sand and glean small prey, and the deep-water members are thought to forage over soft sediment for benthic invertebrates and other small organisms in near-darkness. FishBase places the deep-water Placidochromis at trophic levels around 3.2-3.3, consistent with a diet of small invertebrates rather than fish or plant matter. At nearly 492 ft the food base is sparse and dominated by benthic invertebrates and detritus, so a generalised feeder like communis is well suited to gleaning whatever small prey the deep sediment offers. For this species specifically, feeding ecology is inferred from its relatives and habitat rather than recorded from stomach contents or direct observation.

Mating

Courtship and spawning behaviour have not been described for Placidochromis communis. Lake Malawi's haplochromine cichlids, including Placidochromis, are overwhelmingly maternal mouthbrooders in which males court females with displays and the female takes the fertilised eggs into her mouth, so communis is expected to follow that pattern. In the near-total darkness of habitats approaching 492 ft, conventional visual courtship signals must be greatly reduced or absent, and how these very deep haps locate mates and pair is essentially unknown — a genuinely open question about a barely studied community. What can be said with confidence is only what the genus and the wider flock make near-certain: a polygynous mouthbrooding system rather than pair-bonded biparental care, however that plays out in the dark.

Breeding

There is no published account of spawning, clutch size or fry development specific to Placidochromis communis. By the consistent biology of Lake Malawi haplochromines, it is a maternal mouthbrooder: the female incubates a relatively small clutch of large, yolky eggs in her buccal cavity for roughly three weeks, releasing fully formed free-swimming fry and continuing to shelter them in her mouth when threatened for a short period afterward. Clutch sizes in comparable small haps run from a few tens to perhaps a hundred eggs. None of this has been measured for communis, which has not been bred in captivity or studied in the wild for reproduction; the description here is extrapolated from the genus and the broader Malawi mouthbrooding flock rather than recorded for the species.

In the aquarium

Placidochromis communis is essentially absent from the aquarium hobby. It is a very deep-water endemic known only from trawled specimens collected at around 476–482 ft, not a fish that can be collected alive for the trade, and it has no established hobby name, husbandry literature or breeding history. Any keeping notes can only be generic to the genus.

The Placidochromis that are kept — chiefly shallow-water species such as Placidochromis electra and Placidochromis phenochilus — are valued as relatively peaceful, sand-sifting haps that do well in spacious aquaria with a deep sand bed, hard alkaline water (pH around 7.8-8.6, moderately hard) and temperatures in the mid-20s Celsius, among other non-aggressive Malawi haps. A fish adapted to the cold, dark, low-oxygen conditions nearly 492 ft down is not a realistic aquarium subject at all; decompression and the gulf between its natural habitat and a heated tank make it a scientific curiosity rather than a hobby fish. The honest summary is that communis is documented from the lake's depths but plays no part in aquarium experience.

Conservation

Placidochromis communis was assessed by the IUCN in 2018 and listed as Least Concern. Despite being known from deep water, it was recorded from more than one area of the northern lake (the Malawian and Tanzanian shores), and its deep, hard-to-access habitat is relatively buffered from the most intense inshore pressures, so the assessors did not consider it threatened. That said, Lake Malawi as a whole faces well-documented pressures — heavy artisanal and commercial fishing, sedimentation from catchment deforestation, and the slow expansion of the lake's deoxygenated deep layer, which is especially relevant to a fish living near the lower edge of the oxygenated column. Deep-water trawling can also affect benthic cichlid communities that have nowhere shallower to retreat. A Least Concern listing reflects the absence of evidence of decline and the species' apparently wider-than-single-point range, rather than any detailed population monitoring; like most deep-water Malawi cichlids, communis remains lightly studied.
