Taxonomy & naming
Placidochromis fuscus was described in 2004 by the Belgian ichthyologist Mark Hanssens in his revision 'The deep-water Placidochromis species,' a chapter (pages 104–197) in Jos Snoeks's edited volume 'The Cichlid Diversity of Lake Malawi/Nyasa/Niassa: Identification, Distribution and Taxonomy' (Cichlid Press, El Paso). The holotype (MRAC 99-41-P-3927) and three paratypes were taken at Msaka (also rendered Masaka) in Malawi, at the southern end of the lake, from a depth of 87–89 metres, during the SADC/GEF Lake Malawi/Nyasa Biodiversity Conservation Project. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the name as valid: Placidochromis fuscus Hanssens 2004, in family Cichlidae, subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae. The genus Placidochromis was established by Ethelwynn Trewavas in 1935 and is one of the large haplochromine genera of the Malawi flock; Hanssens's revision dealt specifically with the deep-water assemblage, a group that is poorly sampled and consequently rich in newly described and thinly documented species. The specific epithet fuscus is Latin for 'dark brown,' chosen for the dark melanin pattern seen in mature males.
Morphology
Placidochromis fuscus is a small cichlid, reaching about 3 in standard length in the type material (FishBase). Hanssens's diagnosis is largely meristic and morphometric: head length about 33.3–34.8 percent of standard length, head width 40.5–42.9 percent of head length, snout length 30.2–30.8 percent of head length, lower-jaw length 37.3–39.2 percent of head length, a fairly large eye (diameter 36.4–37.3 percent of head length), predorsal distance 36.6–38.6 percent of standard length and body depth 36.6–39.2 percent of standard length. The outer oral dentition is described as well-developed and bicuspid, and the gape is inclined at roughly 10–15 degrees to the horizontal. The dorsal fin carries 16–17 spines and 9–10 soft rays, and the anal fin 3 spines and 8 soft rays. The most quotable external feature is the one that gives the species its name — the dark melanin pattern that mature males develop — but, as with most deep-water Malawi haplochromines known only from net-caught preserved specimens, full life coloration is not documented and no widely available photograph of a living fish exists.
Habitat
The species is a deep-water fish of Lake Malawi. FishBase gives a depth range of 87–89 metres, matching the type locality at Msaka in the south of the lake; it is currently known only from this single locality. At nearly 90 metres the lake floor is a dim, cool environment of open sand and mud, far below the rocky, sunlit shallows that the famous mbuna and the ornamental fishery occupy. Lake Malawi is permanently stratified, and dissolved oxygen declines with depth, so deep-water haplochromines such as fuscus inhabit a comparatively narrow and demanding band of the lake. The single-locality record is more a reflection of how little the deep lake floor has been sampled than firm evidence of a genuinely tiny range — a recurring theme for this group, which only became known at all through dedicated deep trawling during the SADC/GEF survey.
Feeding
No direct dietary study has been published for Placidochromis fuscus, and FishBase records no diet composition for it. The well-developed bicuspid outer teeth and the slightly inclined gape suggest a benthic feeder that takes small invertebrates and other edible material from the soft lake floor, the general mode across much of the genus. FishBase places fuscus at an estimated trophic level of about 3.3, derived from its size and the trophic ecology of close relatives, consistent with a small invertivore rather than a piscivore or a dedicated algae-grazer. Its moderately large eye fits foraging in the low light of deep water. With no stomach-content data available, any more specific dietary claim would be conjecture.
Mating
There is no published account of courtship or spawning in Placidochromis fuscus. Like nearly all Lake Malawi haplochromines, it is almost certainly a maternal mouthbrooder, with males courting females and the female taking the fertilised eggs into her mouth to incubate them. The development of a dark male melanin pattern — the trait behind the name fuscus — is consistent with the heightened breeding coloration that male Malawi cichlids typically use in display, and hints that males signal to females in the usual haplochromine way. But the actual courtship sequence, whether males defend territories or build any kind of sand depression, and the role of anal-fin egg-spots, have not been observed in this species and are inferred from the broader flock.
Breeding
No breeding has been recorded for Placidochromis fuscus, in the wild or in captivity. By the consistent biology of the Malawi haplochromine radiation, it is expected to be a maternal mouthbrooder producing modest clutches of large, yolky eggs that the female broods in her buccal cavity for several weeks before releasing free-swimming fry, with no biparental care and no constructed nest. FishBase rates the species' resilience as high, with a model-estimated minimum population doubling time of under 15 months — a calculated figure, not a measured one. As with so many deep-water Malawi endemics, the clutch size, brooding duration and fry development of fuscus are simply unknown and are inferred here from close relatives.
In the aquarium
Placidochromis fuscus is not an aquarium fish. It is a deep-water endemic known only from the scientific type series, with no established presence in the ornamental trade, no trade name and no body of keeping experience. Its depth — around 87 to 89 metres — places it well beyond the reach of the collectors who supply the Malawi cichlid hobby, who work the rocky and shallow-sand habitats rather than the deep lake floor.
This distinguishes it sharply from the colourful, hobby-popular members of the genus such as Placidochromis electra and Placidochromis phenochilus, which live shallow and are widely traded. Any husbandry notes for fuscus would be extrapolation from the genus: a spacious, well-filtered aquarium with a sand bed, stable hard alkaline water in the Lake Malawi range and a varied diet of small frozen and prepared foods. In practice there is no realistic way to obtain the fish and no keeping record to build on. The honest conclusion is that this is a species documented from a museum type series and a survey dataset, not one that enters the aquarium.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Placidochromis fuscus as Data Deficient, in an assessment dated 19 June 2018 — an honest reflection of how little is known about a fish recorded from a single deep locality. Data Deficient means there is not enough information to judge its extinction risk, not that it is safe; for a species known from one spot at one depth, that uncertainty is the central conservation fact. Lake Malawi as a whole faces heavy artisanal and commercial fishing, sedimentation from catchment deforestation, pollution and the long-term effects of a warming, more strongly stratified lake that may further compress the oxygenated deep-water habitat these specialists depend on. The species is not targeted by the ornamental fishery and is too small and too deep to be a food fish, so direct exploitation is not a concern; the open questions are how widely it actually occurs on the deep lake floor and whether lake-wide habitat change threatens it. Better deep-water survey data would be needed before its status could be reassessed with confidence.
