Taxonomy & naming
Placidochromis intermedius was described in 2004 by the Belgian ichthyologist Mark Hanssens, in his chapter 'The deep-water Placidochromis species' within Jos Snoeks's landmark volume The Cichlid Diversity of Lake Malawi/Nyasa/Niassa: Identification, Distribution and Taxonomy (Cichlid Press). That work untangled a cluster of deep-living haplochromines that had previously been lumped under informal names — material formerly passed around as 'deep-water altus', for instance, proved to be a mixture that included this species and others — and gave several of them, intermedius among them, their first formal scientific names. The genus Placidochromis was erected by Eccles and Trewavas in 1989 for a group of generally calm-mannered Malawi haplochromines; its name joins Latin placidus, 'placid', with the cichlid name-element chromis. The epithet intermedius is Latin for 'intermediate' or 'in the middle', chosen because the fish has a typical, average Placidochromis shape, lacking the more pronounced specialisations of some of its congeners. Catalog of Fishes lists the species as valid: Placidochromis intermedius Hanssens, 2004.
Morphology
This is a small cichlid, reaching only about 2.5 in standard length. It is a comparatively deep-bodied fish — body depth around 38–41 percent of standard length — with the short, deep proportions that give it its name. Fin counts are 14–15 dorsal spines with 10 soft rays, and 3 anal spines with 8–9 soft rays. Hanssens separated it from its deep-water relatives chiefly on a suite of measured proportions and meristics rather than on colour: head length about 35.5–35.8 percent of standard length, a pointed snout (snout length roughly 29–30 percent of head length), a moderately long lower jaw, a slender premaxillary pedicel and lachrymal, a predorsal distance near 37 percent of standard length, and a count of 19–22 gill-rakers on the lower limb of the first gill arch — the gill-raker number being a particularly useful character for telling these otherwise similar deep-water species apart. As is typical for fishes known mainly from trawl-caught, preserved specimens, the life coloration and any sexual differences in pattern are not well documented.
Habitat
Placidochromis intermedius is endemic to Lake Malawi and is recorded from the southern part of the lake. It is a genuinely deep-water fish: FishBase gives a depth range of about 322–404 ft, placing it among the lake's benthopelagic deep specialists, far below the rock and sand habitats familiar from the aquarium trade. At these depths the water is cool, dimly lit and strongly stratified, and the bottom is typically soft sediment. Like the other deep-water Placidochromis sorted out by Hanssens, intermedius appears to be a fish of this offshore benthic zone rather than the littoral, and its distribution within the southern basin reflects sampling by deep nets and dredges more than direct observation. Detailed habitat preferences — substrate type, microhabitat, association with particular depth bands — are not described beyond the broad depth range.
Feeding
No dedicated dietary study has been published for Placidochromis intermedius, and its feeding ecology is inferred from its anatomy and the habits of related deep-water Placidochromis. FishBase assigns it an estimated trophic level of about 3.2, consistent with a small invertebrate-feeding omnivore. Members of this deep-water assemblage generally forage over and within the soft bottom, taking small benthic invertebrates and zooplankton; intermedius, with its average jaw structure and moderate gill-raker count, fits the picture of a generalist micro-predator rather than a specialist of any single prey type. In the absence of stomach-content data, this remains a reasonable inference from the genus rather than a documented fact for the species.
Mating
Courtship and mating have not been observed in Placidochromis intermedius. As a Lake Malawi haplochromine it is confidently expected to be a maternal mouthbrooder, following the reproductive template that is essentially uniform across the lake's hundreds of 'hap' and mbuna species. In that pattern, males court females with displays — often over a chosen patch of substrate — and females select mates and then take the fertilised eggs into the mouth. For a deep-water, dispersed species the natural display setting would be the open sediment plains rather than a structured reef. The intensity of any breeding coloration, the form of male display and the timing of spawning are all undocumented for this species, and the description here is generalised from the wider flock.
Breeding
There is no published record of clutch size, egg development or fry-rearing for Placidochromis intermedius. By the consistent biology of Lake Malawi haplochromines, it is a female mouthbrooder: the female incubates the eggs and larvae in her buccal cavity for several weeks, releasing free-swimming young that may briefly retreat to her mouth when alarmed. Small haps of this size typically produce modest clutches of a few dozen eggs, a low fecundity offset by the high survival that intensive mouthbrooding affords. Because the species is known almost entirely from deep-net sampling and preserved material, none of these particulars have been observed directly; what is offered is the standard Malawi-flock pattern rather than a species-specific account.
In the aquarium
Placidochromis intermedius is not an aquarium fish in any practical sense. It is a small, deep-water endemic known from scientific sampling rather than the trade, with no established hobby presence, no commercial name and no body of keeping experience specific to it. Any husbandry comments are purely extrapolated from the genus and from general Lake Malawi practice, and should be read with that caveat. Were such a fish to be kept, it would call for the hard, alkaline water of Lake Malawi (high pH and moderate-to-high hardness), clean and well-oxygenated conditions, a soft sandy substrate and a calm community of similarly mild sand- and open-water haps rather than aggressive rock-dwellers; a varied diet of small frozen and live invertebrates plus a quality cichlid preparation would suit its presumed micro-predatory feeding. In practice, however, this is a faunistic and taxonomic entity rather than a fish on anyone's stock list.
Conservation
Placidochromis intermedius was assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern, with the assessment dated 20 June 2018, and it carries no CITES listing. The Least Concern rating reflects its occurrence across the southern basin of a very large lake rather than any detailed knowledge of population trends, which are unknown. Like all of Lake Malawi's deep-water endemics, it is nonetheless subject to lake-wide pressures: intensive and expanding fisheries — including demersal trawling that works precisely the deep bottom these fishes inhabit — alongside catchment erosion, sedimentation, nutrient enrichment and the warming and deoxygenation of deep water under climate change, which can shrink the cool, oxygenated band on which deep specialists depend. The conservation literature on Lake Malawi consistently highlights these threats at the ecosystem scale. For a barely studied deep-water species, the most meaningful protection comes from safeguarding the lake's deep benthic environment and managing its fisheries sustainably.
