Steatocranus casuarius, the buffalohead or lionhead cichlid, is a small grey-brown fish of the Congo River rapids that has spent decades as one of the best-loved oddballs in the hobby. Like the rest of its genus it is a rheophile of the boulder-strewn fast water below Malebo Pool, and it has paid for that life with its swim bladder: the organ is so reduced that the fish cannot hang in open water and instead hops and perches over the bottom on its fins. Mature males carry a swollen fatty hump on the forehead that gives the species its English names and its scientific one — a head that, like a cassowary's bony casque, rises into a rounded crest.

Taxonomy & naming

Steatocranus casuarius was described by the Belgian ichthyologist Max Poll in 1939 in his monograph on the fishes of Stanley Pool (Les poissons du Stanley-Pool), published in the Annales du Musée du Congo Belge. The type locality is Kinshasa, on the lower Congo River in what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and the description is anchored not by a single holotype but by a large series of syntypes — dozens of specimens lodged in the Royal Museum for Central Africa at Tervuren (MRAC), catalogued by Derijst in 1991. The species has carried the same name continuously ever since and has no junior synonyms. The genus Steatocranus itself is older, erected by George Albert Boulenger in 1899 for the humped Congo cichlid Steatocranus gibbiceps; casuarius is one of eight species recognised today, all small rheophilic cichlids endemic to the Lower and Central Congo basin (the others being Steatocranus bleheri, Steatocranus gibbiceps, Steatocranus glaber, Steatocranus mpozoensis, Steatocranus rouxi, Steatocranus tinanti and Steatocranus ubanguiensis, with a ninth, Steatocranus masalamasoso, described from the Léfini in 2022). Within the African cichlid subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae, Steatocranus belongs to a lineage of substrate-brooding rheophiles, and molecular work by Schwarzer and colleagues (2011) has shown that the lower-Congo Steatocranus form part of a locally endemic cichlid species flock whose diversification tracks the extraordinary hydrology of the rapids. In the aquarium trade casuarius is most often confused with Steatocranus gibbiceps, with which it shares its range and export channels; a quick field mark is the centre of the body scales — dark in casuarius, pale in gibbiceps. Two other Lower Congo congeners turn up as regular "contaminants" in wholesale Buffalohead shipments out of the Malebo Pool/Kinshasa export hub: Steatocranus ubanguiensis, a smaller species not usually exceeding about 2.5–3 in in the wild and noticeably more aggressive than casuarius, and Steatocranus mpozoensis, easily mistaken for a casuarius juvenile at a glance but told apart by a more gradually sloped head profile and a fright pattern of two dark horizontal lines over a checkered ground, versus the plain checkering casuarius shows when startled.

The species also has a specific place in the hobby's history. It reached Europe in the late 1960s and early 1970s alongside several other newly available West African imports — the rheophilic Teleogramma brichardi and assorted Pelvicachromis and Nanochromis species — but of that whole cohort, Steatocranus casuarius was the only one to become genuinely established as a breeding aquarium fish; the others were kept only sporadically, with few records of any being bred consistently.

Morphology

This is a small, elongate, big-headed cichlid. FishBase gives a maximum of about 4 in total length, while keepers and Seriously Fish report a clear size difference between the sexes, with males reaching roughly 4.5 in and females staying nearer 3 in. The body is cylindrical and heavy at the front, tapering to a narrow caudal peduncle — the build of a fish that lives wedged among rocks rather than cruising open water. Coloration is muted: a base of grey to grey-brown or olive, often with a faint sheen of blue-green on the cheeks and a scattering of pale spots on the flanks and unpaired fins, the centre of each body scale picked out in dark pigment. It is, by the honest admission of every hobby source, a drab fish whose appeal lies in its shape and behaviour rather than colour. The defining feature is the nuchal hump: in dominant, breeding-condition males the forehead swells into a rounded mound of fatty tissue that lifts the profile into a near-vertical brow and gives the fish its buffalohead, lionhead and blockhead names. The hump is the most reliable sex character — males grow larger and far more developed crests than females — and, intriguingly, it is not fixed; keepers note that an individual's hump can shrink or swell noticeably with mood and dominance over short periods. The genus's whole body plan is built around the same problem the reduced swim bladder creates: Steatocranus's short, stubby ventral fins have been compared to the paired suction-disk-like fins of some gobies, another unrelated lineage that traded buoyancy control for the ability to hold station on the bottom against current, and casuarius shares that basic solution with its rheophilic relatives.

Habitat

Steatocranus casuarius is a fish of the lower Congo River and its rapids, recorded from Malebo Pool (the old Stanley Pool) downstream, in both the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Republic of the Congo. This places it across two freshwater ecoregions — the Malebo Pool basin and the Lower Congo Rapids, the extraordinary 350-km stretch in which the Congo drops some 919 ft between the Pool and Matadi, generating among the most powerful river rapids on Earth. The species lives in this fast, turbulent, intensely oxygenated water, but not out in the main torrent: it occupies the boulder bottom and shelters in pockets of slack water and crevices behind and between the rocks, a demersal fish that grazes the rock surfaces and stays close to cover. Field and aquarium data put the water as warm and near-neutral — FishBase records 75–82 °F, pH 6.0–8.0 and a moderate hardness range of about 5–19 °dH. The lower Congo's water is soft and only mildly acidic to neutral rather than strongly blackwater. Because the fish keeps to the shallow rocky margins and rapids rather than the deep channel, its documented occurrence is in a shallow band, roughly the upper few metres of the rocky littoral; FishBase carries no specific depth range, consistent with a shoreline rheophile rather than a deep-water species.

Feeding

In the wild Steatocranus casuarius is a benthic grazer. FishBase lists it as feeding primarily on algae, and its whole anatomy — a small fish that perches and hops across rock — fits a life spent working over the aufwuchs, the film of algae and the small invertebrates and detritus bound up in it, that coats the boulders of the rapids. It is best read as a grazing omnivore that rasps this growth from rock surfaces, taking the associated micro-invertebrates along with the plant matter; its estimated trophic level (around 3.3 on FishBase) reflects that mixed intake rather than a pure herbivore. In captivity it is undemanding and accepts dried flakes and pellets readily, but the consistent advice from suppliers and keepers is to favour smaller, leaner foods — live and frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp and the like — and specifically to avoid very fatty foods such as Tubifex, which are reported to cause fatal intestinal problems in this genus. A vegetable component suits its grazing biology.

Mating

Buffalohead cichlids are monogamous and form strong, lasting pair bonds. Outside the rocky territory the species is relatively peaceful, but a pair defends the immediate area around its chosen cave fiercely. The most dependable route to a pair, as with many cave-spawning cichlids, is to raise a small group of young fish together and let them sort themselves into couples rather than forcing an adult pairing, which often fails because these fish prefer to choose their own partners. The pair bond is notably durable: hobby accounts hold that if one partner dies the survivor may never re-pair. Because the fish are naturally somewhat skittish, a shoal of dither fish — Congo tetras are the classic choice — helps settle a breeding pair and draw them out into the open. The swollen male hump and his larger size play into the dominance and courtship signalling that precedes spawning, the crest itself a visible badge of condition.

Breeding

Steatocranus casuarius is a biparental cave spawner, and it breeds readily enough in aquaria to be a long-standing hobby staple. The pair selects an existing cave — a rock crevice, an upturned flowerpot, a length of PVC pipe — or excavates its own beneath a rock, digging out the sand to create the chamber. The eggs are attached to the wall or roof of the cave; reported clutches are modest, FishBase giving 20–150 eggs and hobby breeding accounts often citing 40–60 orange eggs, a small clutch typical of a sheltered substrate brooder. Both parents tend the brood: the female concentrates on the eggs and wrigglers inside the cave while the male guards the territory, and reports put hatching at roughly five to seven days with the fry free-swimming around eleven to fourteen days after spawning. At that stage the young leave the cave to forage in a tight group, shepherded by both adults, who herd strays back and drive off any intruder that approaches. Parental care is unusually prolonged for a small cichlid — brood-tending may continue for up to about three months before the young are left to fend for themselves and the pair spawns again; older juveniles are often tolerated in the tank even while a new brood is being raised. Soft, slightly acidic water around pH 6.0–7.0 at the warm end of the range is the reported trigger, on a conditioning diet rich in live and frozen foods.

In the aquarium

The buffalohead is one of the more rewarding small African cichlids for a keeper who wants character over colour, and it has a deserved reputation as easy to keep. A single pair can be housed in a tank from about 29.5 in long (roughly 20 US gal), though more floor space is welcome and is essential if more than one pair is kept, since the footprint — not the water volume — is what matters to a bottom-perching fish. The single most important furnishing is the substrate and aquascape: a bed of sand the fish can dig in, and piles of rock arranged into caves and crevices. Because the fish burrow under the rockwork, stones must be set on the tank base or siliconed together so a digging fish cannot bring a pile down on itself; driftwood and PVC tubes make good supplementary shelters and spawning sites. Plants are not eaten but may be uprooted, so robust species such as Anubias tied to wood or rock work best.

Water should mirror the rapids: well-oxygenated and warm, 75–82 °F, with pH around 6.0–7.5 and soft to moderately hard water (about 2–15 °dH). Provide strong flow in part of the tank — a small powerhead is ideal — but also a quieter corner out of the current, because while this is a rheophile it shelters in slack water rather than fighting the torrent. The fish are sensitive to dissolved waste, so good filtration and regular water changes pay off. Feeding is easy with the one caveat noted above: keep fatty foods like Tubifex off the menu.

Temperament is manageable. Away from a spawning cave the species is fairly peaceful and suits a community of other fast-water Congo fishes — alestiid (Congo) tetras, suckermouth catfish such as Chiloglanis, rheophilic Synodontis like Steatocranus brichardi, and similarly robust characins and barbs. It should not, however, be combined with other cichlids unless the tank is large, and a breeding pair will hold and defend its territory vigorously. Keep it as a pair (or a group of youngsters grown on to pair off), give it rock, sand and flow, and it is an undemanding, characterful, long-lived aquarium fish whose comical bottom-hopping gait and changeable head-hump are the main attraction.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Steatocranus casuarius as Least Concern (assessed 16 February 2009 by T. Moelants, published 2010), reflecting a reasonably wide distribution through the lower Congo and Malebo Pool and no evidence of a population-level decline. It carries no CITES listing and is harvested for the ornamental trade — both wild-caught and captive-bred fish are commercially traded — at levels the assessment does not flag as a threat. The genus as a whole, however, is a cautionary case for the fragility of rheophilic Congo endemics: these are fish bound to specific rapids habitats, and the 2022 description of Steatocranus masalamasoso came with the sobering note that a hydroelectric dam on the Léfini had inundated that species' only known rapids and that recent surveys failed to find it at all. Buffalohead is far more widespread and far less exposed than such narrow-range congeners, but the broader pressures on the lower Congo — hydropower development, altered flow and the sensitivity of rapids specialists to any change in their fast-water habitat — are the backdrop against which the long-term outlook for the whole genus should be read.
