Taxonomy & naming
Steatocranus gibbiceps was described by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1899, in the third fascicle of the first volume of the Annales du Musée du Congo, part of his survey of the new fishes Belgian collectors were sending back from the Congo. The type locality is Matadi, the river port near the head of the Congo estuary in what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and the species is anchored by syntypes split between the Natural History Museum in London (BMNH 1899.2.20.12) and the Royal Museum for Central Africa at Tervuren (MRAC 62). The name has stood unchanged since: the Catalog of Fishes and the CLOFFA checklist (Snoeks & De Boeck, 1991) both list it as valid with no junior synonyms, a notably clean nomenclatural history for a nineteenth-century African cichlid. The genus Steatocranus, also Boulenger's, belongs to the African subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae; the Cichlid Room Companion places it in the tribe Steatocranini, a small assemblage of rheophilic Congo cichlids that converge on a bottom-living, reduced-swim-bladder body plan. Within the genus, gibbiceps is one of the larger and more elongate species and is frequently confused in the trade with the more familiar Steatocranus casuarius (the 'lionhead' or 'blockhead'); the two arrive mixed in Congo shipments and are reliably separated only on close inspection.
Morphology
This is a small cichlid: FishBase gives a maximum of about 4 in total length, and hobbyist accounts of wild-type adults fall in the same range, with mature males reaching roughly 4 in and females noticeably smaller — some keepers report males growing nearly twice the bulk of their mate. The body is elongate and slender — more streamlined than the stockier Steatocranus casuarius — an obvious adaptation to holding position in current. The defining genus trait is the nuchal hump, a deposit of fatty tissue on the forehead that gives the genus its name (Greek steatos, fat or tallow, plus kranion, skull) and the fish its 'bumphead' trade label; in Steatocranus gibbiceps this hump is only moderately developed, growing larger with age and most pronounced in dominant males. The simplest way to tell it from Steatocranus casuarius is the scale pattern: in gibbiceps the centre of each scale is pale and the margin dark, the reverse of casuarius. Coloration is otherwise subdued — brownish-grey to nearly black, with dominant breeding males turning very dark, the colour bleeding into the fins. Sexual dimorphism is marked: males are larger, carry the bigger hump, and bear conspicuously elongated dorsal- and anal-fin extensions, while females stay smaller and plainer. Juveniles and females retain a dark spot at the base of the dorsal fin that persists in adult females but fades out in maturing males.
Habitat
Steatocranus gibbiceps is endemic to the lower Congo River system, recorded from Pool Malebo (the wide lake-like reach formerly called Stanley Pool, between Kinshasa and Brazzaville) downstream through the cataract zone as far as Matadi near the estuary. This places it across two of the freshwater ecoregions that biogeographers use to divide the basin — the Malebo (Stanley) Pool ecoregion and the Lower Congo Rapids ecoregion — a stretch famous among ichthyologists for its violent, high-energy rapids, which have driven repeated convergent evolution of bottom-living, reduced-buoyancy forms in several cichlid lineages. The water it lives in is fast and turbulent, flowing over rock, and is consequently very high in dissolved oxygen; FishBase characterises the species as rheophilic and demersal. Crucially for aquarists, the lower Congo runs soft but is not strongly acidic — closer to neutral than the blackwaters of the central basin — so this is a soft-water, near-neutral fish rather than an extreme acidophile. Documented temperatures sit in the warm tropical range, FishBase citing roughly 75–81 °F. As a goby-like rock-hopper of shallow rapids and rocky margins it occupies the topmost, sunlit band of the river rather than its depths; specific depth measurements are not published, so the habitat is best described as the shallow rocky shoreline and rapids zone.
Feeding
FishBase classes Steatocranus gibbiceps as feeding primarily on molluscs — snails — and the species earns a hobbyist reputation for clearing a tank of pest snails quickly. That said, the wild diet is better described as a benthic generalist working the rock surfaces of the rapids: keepers and field summaries note it also takes small invertebrates and grazes some algae and aufwuchs, the thin film of attached algae, diatoms and tiny animals that coats current-swept stone. Its trophic level is estimated at about 3.3, consistent with a small predator-grazer rather than a pure herbivore. The crushing of snail shells is handled by the cichlid pharyngeal jaw, and the goby-like habit of hopping over the bottom keeps the fish constantly in contact with the substrate where this food is found. In the lower-Congo community it fills the niche of a small, rock-dwelling benthic forager among the many specialised cichlids that partition the rapids.
Mating
Steatocranus gibbiceps forms strong, often lifelong monogamous pair bonds — a behaviour typical of the cave-spawning Steatocranini and one keepers consistently observe. Outside the immediate breeding period the fish are relatively peaceful and can be kept in pairs or, in a large enough tank, in groups where a social order plays out; but each fish demands personal space, and a settled pair will fiercely defend the area immediately around its chosen cave or burrow, driving off other members of its own species. Pairing typically emerges as juveniles mature: in one documented rearing, a group raised together began to show aggression toward one another at around 2 in, from which a bonded pair sorted itself out. Courtship and territory establishment centre on a cavity in the rock — a crevice, an overhang, or in the aquarium a clay tube or pot — which the pair adopts and prepares as the future spawning site.
Breeding
The species is a biparental cave spawner: the pair selects an enclosed cavity, the female deposits her eggs on its inner wall or ceiling, and both parents care for the brood. Exact wild clutch counts are not published, but as a small cave-spawning cichlid it lays modest clutches in the genus-typical range — one captive spawn yielded about 40 raised fry, far fewer than the hundreds an open-substrate eartheater produces, reflecting the security of a sealed nest. Parental care is well developed and conspicuous: the female tends the eggs and fry inside and around the cave while the male patrols and defends the surrounding territory, and observers describe Steatocranus as excellent, attentive parents — one anecdotal report even has a single pair guarding three successive batches of fry at once. Fry are small but robust, marked with vertical dark bars and the dark dorsal-base spot, and stay close to the cave entrance for their first weeks before ranging more widely. Captive triggers are unremarkable — clean, warm, well-oxygenated water, regular water changes and a varied diet are enough — and the fish is considered easy to breed once a compatible pair has formed.
In the aquarium
Steatocranus gibbiceps is a long-standing, rewarding aquarium fish, less common in shops than Steatocranus casuarius but kept and bred by Congo-cichlid enthusiasts for decades and well within reach of a moderately experienced hobbyist. Its needs follow directly from its rapids home. The single most important parameter is water quality and oxygenation: although it does not require a raging current to thrive, it comes from clean, fast, oxygen-saturated water, so brisk turnover, good surface agitation or a powerhead, and diligent maintenance matter more than for most cichlids. Water chemistry is easy to satisfy — soft to moderately hard, and near neutral (roughly pH 6.5–8.0) rather than acidic, mirroring the lower Congo; temperature in the low-to-mid 20s °C (about 75–81 °F, or 73–81 °F) suits it well.
Because these are bottom-dwellers that hop and perch rather than swim in open water, floor space matters more than height, and a pair can be housed in a modest tank — on the order of an 31.5 in / 75-litre footprint — with the layout built around their behaviour. Provide a structured rockscape with abundant caves, crevices and lengths of tube or upturned clay pots: each fish wants a refuge, and a breeding pair needs a defensible cavity. A sand or fine-gravel substrate over which they can forage completes the biotope. Plants are generally left alone but may be uprooted or nipped when the fish come into breeding condition, so anchor or pot anything delicate.
Feeding is simple — they take most prepared and frozen foods, relish worms and small live or frozen invertebrates, accept spirulina and vegetable matter, and will dispatch pest snails. One important caveat repeatedly stressed by experienced keepers: avoid fatty foods such as tubifex and beef heart as a staple, since these can cause fatal intestinal and digestive problems in Steatocranus; a leaner, varied diet keeps them healthy. Temperament is manageable: outside of breeding they are calm and only moderately territorial, and they coexist with other robust, similarly sized fishes, but the zone around an active nest is defended hard and same-species rivals will be driven off, so give pairs room and broken sightlines. The most common mistakes are keeping them too warm and stagnant, overfeeding rich fatty foods, and underestimating how much territory a spawning pair claims.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Steatocranus gibbiceps as Least Concern, in an assessment by T. Moelants dated 16 February 2009. The rating reflects a relatively wide distribution through the lower Congo and Pool Malebo and no evidence of a major decline, though the population trend was recorded as unknown. The species carries no CITES or CMS listing and is harmless to humans. It is collected for the ornamental trade but at modest volumes, and it is not a target of food fisheries. The broader context is the lower Congo itself: the rapids stretch between Pool Malebo and the estuary is a globally significant centre of fish endemism whose extraordinary diversity is tied to the river's specific hydrology, and which sits downstream of growing pressures from hydropower development, urban expansion around Kinshasa and Brazzaville, and pollution. None of these is documented as an immediate threat to this particular cichlid, but as a habitat specialist of a hydrologically unique and increasingly modified river reach, its long-term security is bound up with the health of the lower Congo as a whole.
