Taxonomy & naming
Steatocranus glaber was described in 1976 by the American ichthyologists Tyson R. Roberts and Donald J. Stewart, in their landmark monograph 'An ecological and systematic survey of fishes in the rapids of the lower Zaïre or Congo River' (Bulletin of the Museum of Comparative Zoology, volume 147, number 6, page 295, plate 12 figure a). That survey was the first serious accounting of the extraordinary fish fauna of the lower Congo rapids, and it named a string of rheophilic cichlids new to science, Steatocranus glaber among them. The holotype (MCZ 50557) and a series of paratypes (MCZ 50558; with two specimens transferred to the USNM as USNM 216367) were taken at the type locality on the Lower Congo River near Inga, at roughly 5°31.5′S, 13°37.5′E. The name has never been challenged: the Catalog of Fishes lists it as valid, and it has been carried forward through the CLOFFA checklist (Snoeks & De Boeck 1991) and the most recent Congo-basin treatments (Ibala Zamba et al. 2022). The genus Steatocranus was erected by George Albert Boulenger in 1899 and belongs to the African subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae; it is a tight cluster of Congo-basin rheophiles, the so-called lionhead or buffalohead cichlids. Molecular work by Schwarzer and colleagues (2011) placed Steatocranus glaber within a strongly supported clade of lower Congo endemics — alongside Steatocranus cf. gibbiceps, Steatocranus mpozoensis and several lineages of Steatocranus cf. tinanti — that the authors showed had radiated in situ within the rapids themselves, making the genus a textbook case of riverine speciation.
Morphology
Steatocranus glaber is one of the smaller members of its genus: FishBase records a maximum of about 2 in standard length, so even large adults are short, chunky fish only a couple of inches long. The body is elongate and cylindrical rather than the deep, disc-shaped silhouette of a typical lake cichlid — the build of a fish that lives pressed against rock in moving water rather than hovering in open midwater. The head is broad and the forehead rises into a low nuchal swelling, but in this species that 'hump' is modest and, critically, scaleless and smooth, which is exactly what the epithet glaber (Latin for bald or smooth) records. Roberts and Stewart noted candidly that the bald hump 'does not uniquely distinguish this fish from other Steatocranus' but was 'still appropriately descriptive,' a rare moment of taxonomic honesty about a diagnostic character. Coloration in preserved and aquarium material is the muted, cryptic palette of the whole genus — brownish to grey-tan, sometimes with darker barring or speckling that breaks up the outline against rock and gravel. The most consequential anatomical feature is internal: in keeping with its rheophilic relatives, Steatocranus has a reduced swim bladder, which robs it of neutral buoyancy and forces it to rest on and 'hop' across the substrate rather than swim freely above it. Sexual dimorphism in the genus follows a consistent pattern — males grow larger and develop the more pronounced cranial hump while females stay smaller and slimmer — though in this minimally-humped species the difference is subtle and is most reliably read from size and from the female's plumper, breeding-ready body.
Habitat
Steatocranus glaber is a narrow-range endemic of the lower Congo River, recorded only from the rapids in the vicinity of the Inga falls (and nearby Yalala) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This is one of the most extreme freshwater environments on Earth: within the Lower Congo Rapids freshwater ecoregion the river drops roughly 280 metres over about 350 kilometres between the end of Malebo (Stanley) Pool and the city of Matadi, generating some of the most powerful hydraulics of any river anywhere. The water is warm, well-oxygenated and fast, and the rapids' churning, deep, turbulent channels have effectively partitioned the cichlid fauna into a mosaic of locally endemic, current-adapted species. Steatocranus glaber is a demersal, strictly freshwater fish of this rocky, high-energy biotope. FishBase gives an in-situ chemistry of pH 6.0–7.5 with hardness up to around 20 dH and water temperatures of about 73–81 °F — essentially near-neutral, soft-to-moderately-hard, warm tropical water. As a rapids-dweller it lives shallow, working the rock and gravel along the margins and bed of the channels rather than the open deep water; no precise depth band is published for this species, but its biology places it in the well-lit, oxygen-rich shallows where diatoms grow on stone.
Feeding
By the standards of the genus, Steatocranus glaber is a grazer of the rock surface. FishBase summarises its diet as feeding 'on diatoms and other small particles,' which fits a fish that spends its life mouthing the algal and detrital film that coats stone in fast, sunlit water. Its estimated trophic level of about 3.2 reflects a mixed diet — the biofilm it rasps from rock carries not only diatoms and algae but the meiofauna, aufwuchs invertebrates and organic particles trapped within it, so the fish takes animal as well as plant matter without being a dedicated predator. In the community of the rapids it occupies the benthic grazer guild, exploiting a food source — the thin but continuously renewed periphyton of a high-energy river — that rewards a small, substrate-clinging body plan and works against open-water competitors. This trophic position is shared broadly across the lower-Congo Steatocranus radiation, with the various species partitioning microhabitat and bite mechanics rather than diverging into wholly different diets.
Mating
Steatocranus glaber forms monogamous pairs, the reproductive pattern documented for the genus as a whole. Pair-bonding cichlids of this kind establish and jointly hold a small territory centred on a spawning shelter, and the pair bond — rather than a harem or a lek — is the social unit. The genus is known for being substrate-oriented and territorial around cover: with a reduced swim bladder and a habit of resting on the bottom, these fish defend caves and crevices in the rock as both home and nursery. Courtship and territorial behaviour specific to Steatocranus glaber have not been described in detail in the wild, where the violence of the rapids makes direct observation almost impossible, but in its close relatives pairing is accompanied by mutual display, substrate cleaning and joint defence of the chosen cavity against intruders. The fish is small and not notably aggressive at community scale, but like other cave-spawning cichlids a bonded pair becomes pointedly defensive of the immediate area around the nest.
Breeding
Steatocranus glaber is a biparental cave spawner, the breeding mode FishBase records for the species and the strategy used across the genus. The pair selects a sheltered cavity — a crevice or hollow under rock, out of the direct force of the current — and the female attaches her eggs to its ceiling or wall; both parents then tend the clutch, with the female typically fanning and guarding the eggs inside while the male patrols the entrance and the surrounding territory. Spawning a guarded clutch inside a sealed rock cavity is a sensible adaptation to a turbulent river: it shelters eggs and fry from the current and from open-water predators alike. No clutch count has been published for Steatocranus glaber specifically; congeneric lionhead cichlids are modest, careful breeders that lay relatively small clutches — on the order of a few dozen to a couple of hundred comparatively large eggs — and produce robust, well-guarded fry rather than clouds of tiny larvae, a quality-over-quantity strategy that suits cave spawning. After the wrigglers become free-swimming the parents continue to shepherd them around the nest site, retreating into the cavity at any threat. The fast, warm, oxygen-rich conditions of the rapids are presumably the natural spawning trigger, but the detailed reproductive timing of this species in the wild remains undocumented.
In the aquarium
Steatocranus glaber is essentially a specialist's fish — far less often imported than its relatives the lionhead (Steatocranus casuarius) or the slender buffalohead (Steatocranus tinanti) — but the husbandry that suits those species applies directly to it, and the genus as a whole has a reputation as hardy and rewarding for keepers willing to respect its rheophilic nature. Because it is a small fish (around 2 in), a single pair does not need a large tank; a footprint of roughly 31.5 in length is a sensible minimum, with the emphasis on floor area and rockwork rather than height, since these are bottom-dwellers that almost never use open midwater. The defining requirement is current and oxygen: replicate the rapids with strong, well-oxygenated flow (a powerhead or a generously sized filter return) over a hardscape of smooth stones, cobbles and slate arranged into the caves and crevices the fish needs for shelter and spawning. A sand or fine-gravel base, plenty of line-of-sight-breaking rock, and dim, calm surroundings keep the fish settled. Water should be warm (about 73–81 °F) and near-neutral (pH roughly 6.0–7.5), and although the species comes from soft-to-moderate water it is not chemically fussy within that envelope; clean, oxygen-saturated water matters far more than exact hardness. Feeding is straightforward — as a natural biofilm grazer it readily takes quality sinking pellets, frozen and live foods such as bloodworm and brine shrimp, and benefits from some vegetable or spirulina content to echo its diatom-heavy wild diet. The honest caveats: the reduced swim bladder means the fish 'crawls' and hops rather than swims, which is normal and not a sign of illness; pairs become territorial around a chosen cave, so a small group is best given enough caves to space out; and because Steatocranus glaber is rarely traded, most keepers will encounter it only as occasional wild imports, so its true aquarium track record is thin compared with its better-known congeners. It is not a community fish for boisterous open-water tankmates, but it is an excellent subject for a dedicated Congo-rapids biotope.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Steatocranus glaber as Vulnerable under criterion D2 (assessed 16 February 2009 by T. Moelants; population trend unknown). The D2 listing flags a species with a very restricted area of occupancy or number of locations, such that a single plausible threat could push it to Critically Endangered or Extinct in a short time — precisely the situation of a fish known only from the rapids around Inga. That stretch of the lower Congo is the site of the existing Inga I and Inga II hydroelectric dams and the long-proposed, far larger Grand Inga scheme; large-scale damming and flow alteration of the very rapids this species depends on is the obvious looming pressure on a narrow-range rheophile whose entire habitat is defined by fast water. The species is of no fisheries interest and carries no CITES or CMS listing, so direct exploitation is not a concern. But the combination of a pinpoint distribution, a habitat that cannot survive impoundment, and the relentless hydropower development of the lower Congo means its long-term outlook is tied directly to the fate of the Inga rapids themselves — and to how much of that unique river ecosystem any future dam leaves intact.
