Taxonomy & naming
Stigmatochromis melanchros was formally described by Jay R. Stauffer Jr., Rachel M. Cleaver-Yoder, and Ad Konings in 2011 in the Proceedings of the Biological Society of Washington (vol. 124, no. 3, pp. 212–222; DOI 10.2988/10-30.1). The paper simultaneously described a second new congener, S. macrorhynchos, bringing the genus to six species at the time of writing — S. woodi (type species), S. modestus, Stigmatochromis pholidophorus, Stigmatochromis pleurospilus, S. macrorhynchos, and Stigmatochromis melanchros. The holotype is PSU 4944, an adult of 6.5 in standard length, collected by J. Stauffer at Mazinzi Reef, Lake Malawi, Malawi (13°53'S, 34°53'E) on 10 March 1996; three paratypes were also taken at Mazinzi Reef between 1995 and 2002. The species catalogue entry is Catalog of Fishes species ID 71973.
In the trade the fish circulated for years under the pre-description labels Stigmatochromis sp. 'tolae' and 'Haplochromis tolae', names that persist informally; the description settled its identity and its place in the genus. FishBase (speccode 66294) and Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes both confirm the valid name and authorship.
Stigmatochromis was erected by Eccles and Trewavas in 1989 and is placed within the Pseudocrenilabrinae, the enormous subfamily that encompasses the Lake Malawi cichlid flock. It is diagnosed primarily by its melanin pattern — three characteristic spots on the flank (supra-pectoral, supra-anal, and precaudal), a snout longer than the postorbital head length, and a premaxillary pedicel proportionally longer than in the closely related Sciaenochromis. Within the genus, Stigmatochromis melanchros is separated from its congeners by a combination of characters: wider interorbital width than S. macrorhynchos (19.3–20.5% of head length vs. 13.7–16.2%), larger preorbital depth relative to eye diameter than Stigmatochromis pholidophorus (95.8–109.3% vs. 75.4%), shorter lower jaw than S. modestus (40.7–44.4% of head length vs. 45.2–48.3%), fewer lower-jaw teeth than S. modestus (13–19 vs. 24–28), and a smaller horizontal eye diameter than S. woodi (25.2–26.9% of head length vs. 27.0–32.6%).
Morphology
FishBase lists the maximum recorded standard length as 6.5 in SL. Field observations compiled by malawi.si put adults at approximately 7.5 in total length in males and 6.5 in TL in females, making this one of the mid-to-large haplochromines of the intermediate zone — comparable in bulk to a robust Nimbochromis but less elongate. The body is moderately deep and laterally compressed, with a large head and distinctly prognathous jaws whose outer rows carry predominantly unicuspid teeth, a dentition suited to gripping and swallowing fish. Jaw and head dimensions are given in the description: the lower jaw runs 40.7–44.4% of head length, and the deep head (67.8–76.8% of head length) gives Stigmatochromis melanchros a broad, blunt profile compared to the longer-snouted S. macrorhynchos.
Sexual dimorphism is pronounced. Breeding males undergo a dramatic melanistic transformation, becoming an overall very dark blue-black — an appearance so total that the fish can look uniformly black in shaded areas or at depth — with iridescent blue sheen detectable in good light. Females are strikingly different: a silvery to pale ground colour punctuated by three distinct round black blotches on the lateral midline, pale orange or yellowish highlights on the scale edges, and small dark markings at the base of the dorsal fin — the typical Stigmatochromis spot pattern. Non-breeding males resemble females but gradually intensify colouring as they come into condition. Juveniles and sub-adults of both sexes share the female pattern and form loose aggregations in shallower parts of the intermediate zone; older fish become progressively more solitary.
Habitat
Stigmatochromis melanchros is restricted to the southern basin of Lake Malawi, in Malawian territorial waters. Its recorded range spans the reefs of Mazinzi (the type locality), Chimwalani, and Mbenji Island, all in the southern part of the lake. The species is not currently known from Tanzanian or Mozambican waters; FishBase gives the distributional envelope as 13°S–14°S, 34°E–35°E, consistent with a southern endemic.
Its preferred biotope is the intermediate zone — the transitional habitat between the rocky shoreline and the open sandy bottom — specifically areas characterised by large, overhanging boulders in a matrix of accumulated sediment. Adults are most regularly recorded at 49–82 ft depth, with larger individuals occasionally found at around 98 ft in adjacent sand zones where they apparently hunt. The sediment-rich nature of its haunts, with overhangs providing shelter and ambush positions, is the consistent habitat signature noted at every locality.
Lake Malawi's chemistry is well documented: clear, warm, and hard-alkaline, with pH typically 7.7–8.6, surface temperatures ranging approximately 75–82 °F across seasons (deeper zones being cooler and more stable), and moderate hardness driven by the lake's carbonate geology. These values are habitat-typical for the species' depth range; no direct in-situ measurements specific to Stigmatochromis melanchros have been published (flagged: unpublished — values represent general Lake Malawi intermediate-zone conditions from the lake's water-chemistry literature).
Feeding
FishBase designates Stigmatochromis melanchros as a piscivore, and the original description confirms it explicitly: the species "is a piscivore that breeds in rocky reefs where territorial males defend the vertical face of a large boulder near the sandy bottom." malawi.si adds that the diet also includes invertebrates, giving the feeding guild a slightly broader base than strict fish-eating, though piscivory is clearly the primary trophic strategy. FishBase estimates a trophic level of 4.1 for the species (based on size and trophs of close relatives).
The hunting method described by malawi.si is distinctive: the fish positions itself nearly motionless up to about 3 ft above the substrate, then strikes downward with a rapid, short dart to take prey below. This is classic ambush predation from a mid-water wait position, not active chasing. The prognathous jaws, deep head, and robust caudal peduncle are consistent with the explosive acceleration that this style demands. In the aquarium, Stigmatochromis melanchros will accept a wide range of prepared and whole foods — frozen fish fillets, large pellets, and meaty frozen items — and shows a clear preference for high-protein meals, though it can be trained onto quality dry foods.
Mating
Stigmatochromis melanchros is a polygynous species in which territorial males defend breeding sites rather than forming lasting pair bonds. The territory is anchored to the vertical face of a large boulder near the sandy bottom, in the intermediate-zone habitat, and males defend these sites against conspecific rivals as well as other fishes; malawi.si notes that territorial males will confront substantially larger tankmates during active territory defence. Sub-adult males and juveniles of both sexes may coexist in loose aggregations at shallower parts of the habitat, but as males mature and colour up they seek and hold rock-face territories and become progressively more intolerant of conspecific males.
Breeding activity — at least the display component — has been observed throughout the year at Mazinzi Reef, suggesting that Stigmatochromis melanchros does not have a strictly seasonal reproductive cycle. Females that encounter a territorial male and accept his courtship enter the nest area to spawn. The bower or nest site associated with the rock face is the focal point of courtship; males perform lateral displays and colour intensification to attract receptive females.
Breeding
Stigmatochromis melanchros is a maternal mouthbrooder, the reproductive mode universal in the Lake Malawi haplochromine flock. Spawning takes place at the male's defended territory on or near the vertical face of a boulder close to the sandy bottom; eggs are fertilised and immediately taken into the female's buccal cavity. Incubation lasts approximately three weeks, after which the female releases free-swimming fry. During the brooding period females move away from the male's territory to quieter, shallower or more sheltered parts of the intermediate zone, seeking cover among scattered stones — a withdrawal pattern typical of Malawian mouthbrooders that reduces stress and predation pressure on the developing brood.
Clutch size has not been published for this species specifically; as a large haplochromine in the size class of S. woodi (~6.5–7.5 in TL), clutch sizes typical of comparably sized Malawi haps in the literature range broadly (often 20–80 eggs for mid-sized species, up to 100+ for large piscivores). This value should be treated as genus-typical and approximate until direct observations are published (flagged: clutch size not formally documented for Stigmatochromis melanchros; estimate based on congener-class data). In the aquarium, standard Malawi mouthbrooder practice applies: a large tank, minimal disturbance of holding females, and isolation of the female or the fry to prevent harassment and predation on release.
In the aquarium
Stigmatochromis melanchros is rarely encountered in the hobby. It circulates occasionally under the old trade name 'tolae' and shows up sporadically at specialist Malawi importers, but it is not a fish most keepers will stumble across at a general aquatics retailer. That relative scarcity is worth knowing before committing to a tank: sourcing may take patience, and replacement fish are not easy to find if something goes wrong. For keepers who do track it down, it is a rewarding and visually arresting animal — particularly a fully coloured male at close quarters — but it demands a serious setup from the outset.
Tank size is the first and largest constraint. At up to 7.5 in total length, and given the fish's habit of holding and defending a substantial territory around a boulder face, a minimum footprint of 5–6 feet (approximately 59–71 in) is the practical floor for a single specimen; a pair or a small group requires 6 feet or more with enough rock architecture to break sight lines and allow a female to withdraw after spawning. Water chemistry should closely replicate Lake Malawi: hard and alkaline, with pH in the range of 7.7–8.6 and temperature maintained at 75–82 °F. Consistent, moderate water movement and good mechanical filtration are important — a fish this size produces a meaningful bioload, and dirty water in alkaline conditions accelerates the risk of Malawi bloat (discussed below). Substrate should be fine silica or aragonite sand, with a substantial rock structure including at least one large, near-vertical boulder face that mimics the species' natural staging and breeding site. Open sandy floor space in the foreground allows the fish to display its characteristic hover-and-strike posture and reduces stress.
Tankmate selection is the most consequential decision after tank size. Stigmatochromis melanchros is a committed piscivore that ambushes fish from mid-water; any tankmate small enough to fit in its mouth is prey, and the threshold is higher than many keepers expect for a 'medium' Malawi hap — anything under roughly 3–4 in is at serious risk. It is compatible in the broad sense with other large Malawi haplochromines (large Nimbochromis, Tyrannochromis, other big haps) in a sufficiently spacious tank, but it is not a community fish in the way that smaller haps or peacocks are, and it must not be mixed with mbuna or any small cichlid. Conspecific males are aggressive toward each other and should not be housed together unless the tank is very large and heavily decorated. A single male with one or two females is the most commonly recommended group size. Invertebrates and small catfish will be eaten.
Feeding in captivity is straightforward once the fish is settled. Stigmatochromis melanchros accepts quality large cichlid pellets, frozen krill, mussels, whole prawns, and frozen fish flesh (smelt, silversides). Live feeder fish are not necessary and carry biosecurity risks; meaty frozen foods and quality pellets are preferable. The most common keeper mistake — beyond inadequate tank size — is overfeeding high-fat foods or using feeder goldfish extensively, both of which destabilise gut flora and elevate the risk of Malawi bloat (Hexamita-associated internal bacterial infection). Malawi bloat is the single most common cause of otherwise unexplained death in Lake Malawi cichlids in captivity: early signs are loss of appetite, abdominal distension, and laboured breathing, and it requires prompt treatment (metronidazole is the standard first-line drug). A lean feeding schedule — once a day, or every other day for adults — and pristine water quality are the best preventive measures.
Breeding in captivity follows the standard Malawi maternal mouthbrooder pattern. A settled, well-fed female will spawn with a territorial male at the base of the main rock structure. The female broods for approximately three weeks, during which she should not be moved unless harassment from the male or other tank occupants becomes severe; disturbance too early causes premature release or egg-swallowing. When she begins to look thin and restless she is close to releasing, and a separate holding tank with identical water parameters is useful for the fry's first weeks. Released fry are relatively large for mouthbrooder young and will take crushed quality flake and baby brine shrimp from the start. As a large piscivore, Stigmatochromis melanchros fry grow quickly and must be separated by size within weeks to prevent predation among siblings. Successful spawns are reported from specialist keepers but remain uncommon in hobbyist accounts, reflecting the fish's general scarcity in the trade.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Stigmatochromis melanchros as Least Concern, with the assessment dated 19 June 2018, citing the species' presence at multiple southern-lake localities and the absence of specific evidence of population decline. The assessors on record include Ad Konings and the FishBase RMCA team. The species carries no CITES listing.
As a rocky-intermediate-zone endemic confined to the southern Malawian section of the lake, Stigmatochromis melanchros is nevertheless embedded in a lake system under documented and growing pressure. The basin review by Chavula et al. (2023, Journal of Great Lakes Research) catalogues the major stressors: intensive over-fishing and the near-collapse of the chambo (Oreochromis spp.) tilapia fishery that has redirected effort onto other groups; accelerating sedimentation and nutrient loading from catchment deforestation and agricultural runoff; and approximately 33 °F of measured warming in the shallow water zone that has intensified thermal stratification, reduced deep-water mixing, and lowered primary productivity in ways that propagate up the food web. The ScienceDirect study on inshore fish communities (2024) echoes these findings, identifying over-fishing and illegal fishing methods — including beach seines and fine-mesh nets in shallow inshore areas — as particularly damaging to the cichlid fauna, with rocky-shore and intermediate-zone species especially vulnerable because their habitat exposes them to inshore gear.
For Stigmatochromis melanchros specifically, the combination of a restricted known range (Mazinzi Reef, Chimwalani, and Mbenji Island in southern Malawi), a boulder-and-sediment intermediate habitat that is susceptible to siltation from catchment degradation, and its size and attractiveness making it a target for the ornamental fishery (it is traded, albeit in small numbers, under the old 'tolae' label) means the background threat level is real even if the current Red List status is reassuring. It sits in the same position as other southern endemic haps: Least Concern on present evidence, in a lake that is not.
