Hybridization watchi

Stigmatochromis pholidophorus is a widespread but seldom-seen haplochromine cichlid endemic to Lake Malawi, found lake-wide across the sandy and transition zones of all three shoreline nations. It earns its specific epithet — literally 'scale-bearer' in Greek — from the row of dark spots along the base of its dorsal fin, and it hunts with an unusual mid-water patience: hovering motionless above a sandy patch, sometimes a metre off the bottom, before dropping in a sudden lunge to seize a juvenile fish. Rarely exported and poorly established in the hobby, it remains one of Malawi's more enigmatic sand predators.

Taxonomy & naming

Stigmatochromis pholidophorus was described in 1935 by the British ichthyologist Ethelwynn Trewavas in her comprehensive 'A synopsis of the cichlid fishes of Lake Nyasa', published in the Annals and Magazine of Natural History (series 10, vol. 16, pp. 65–118). The original material was collected during the 1925–26 expedition of Cuthbert Christy; the holotype (BMNH 1935.6.14.1544, 3.5 in SL) was taken at Vua on the northern, Malawian shore (Karonga District) of the lake. Trewavas placed the species in Haplochromis, the catch-all genus of the time, and it carried that combination for decades. The genus Stigmatochromis was erected by D. H. Eccles and Trewavas herself in their 1989 monograph Malawian Cichlid Fishes: The Classification of Some Haplochromine Genera (Lake Fish Movies, Germany), which reorganised the non-mbuna haplochromines on the basis of their melanin-pattern diagnostics. Eccles and Trewavas defined Stigmatochromis by a characteristic trio of spots — a supra-pectoral spot below the upper lateral line, a supra-anal spot between the lateral lines, and a precaudal spot — none of which extends to the dorsal-fin base, together with a series of small spots along that base (the pattern that gives pholidophorus its name) and numerous unicuspid teeth in the outer jaw series. The genus currently holds six valid species: Stigmatochromis woodi (the type species, Regan 1922), Stigmatochromis modestus (Günther 1894), Stigmatochromis pholidophorus, Stigmatochromis pleurospilus (Trewavas 1935), and Stigmatochromis macrorhynchos and Stigmatochromis melanchros (both Stauffer, Cleaver-Yoder and Konings 2011). Stigmatochromis pholidophorus and Stigmatochromis pleurospilus were long known only from their single holotypes; it was field work by Konings and colleagues that confirmed pholidophorus is in fact a widespread, living species rather than a nominal rarity. No synonyms have been applied to this species. FishBase carries the trade common name 'candle hap', though this label is not established in the international aquarium hobby — malawi.si documents informal trade labels 'Torpedo' and 'Kambiri Torpedo', neither of which has settled into standard use.

Morphology

The size data for this species carries a notable discrepancy worth understanding. The FishBase maximum of 4.5 in TL (cited from Maréchal 1991) essentially reflects the holotype, an 3.5 in SL specimen — for decades the only known material. Field observations and aquarium experience tell a very different story: malawi.si, drawing on the extensive field documentation of the Konings expeditions, gives males to about 7 in total length and females 5.5–6.5 in, figures consistent with a typical mid-sized Malawi predatory hap. An individual photographed by Stauffer et al. (2011) at Chiofu Bay measured approximately 5 in TL. The FishBase figure should be treated as an artefact of the single-specimen type record, not a maximum. The body is fusiform and moderately deep, well-suited to cruising in the open water above sand. The diagnostic melanin pattern is a supra-pectoral blotch (just below the upper lateral line), a supra-anal blotch (between the two lateral lines), and a precaudal spot, none of which extends up to the dorsal-fin base — the combination that places the species in Stigmatochromis. A series of five or so small dark spots runs along the base of the dorsal fin itself, and these are the literal referent of the epithet pholidophorus. The head is distinctive: a rounded snout profile (described as notably short relative to congeners — head length 33.3% SL versus 36.3–39.8% in other Stigmatochromis; snout-to-dorsal-fin origin 34.5% SL) gives the fish a blunt-faced look. Teeth in the outer row of the lower jaw are mostly unicuspid; 22 were counted on the left lower jaw of the holotype. Lateral-line scale count is about 30, with four rows of cheek scales. Sexual dimorphism is present but not flamboyant: males grow larger and typically develop a blue-grey to silvery body wash when in breeding condition, while females are plainer, with the spot pattern remaining visible in both sexes. The species' relationship to Stigmatochromis modestus — which occupies rockier habitat and is larger still — and to the elongate-snouted Stigmatochromis macrorhynchos can be resolved with the morphometric data in Stauffer et al. (2011), which plots all six species' principal components.

Habitat

Stigmatochromis pholidophorus is endemic to Lake Malawi (Lake Nyasa / Lago Niassa), the East African Rift lake shared between Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania. The species has a lake-wide distribution, with confirmed records from the eastern shores of all three countries; malawi.si documents location variants from Chiofu Bay, Londo Bay, Meponda, Mvunguti, Pombo Rocks and Chiloelo, among others. It is particularly associated with the eastern coast but is described as genuinely lake-wide in occurrence. The preferred biotope is the intermediate or transition zone — the broken ground where sandy substrate meets scattered rocks, or the open sandy shelves that fringe rocky reefs. FishBase describes it as demersal and irregularly encountered over sand in intermediate habitat, or off sandy beaches. It is not a mbuna rock-face species; it requires open space and a sandy component. No formal depth range has been published for the species, and FishBase carries none. The intermediate habitat where it is most commonly observed in the lake typically lies in the shallower end of the sandy zone, probably 16–98 ft, based on analogy with similar Malawi sand predators and field accounts of encounters during dives. The water chemistry is the standard Lake Malawi envelope: warm, hard and alkaline. Surface and near-surface temperatures run approximately 75–82 °F through most of the year, with pH measured at 7.7–8.6 and high carbonate hardness, reflecting the rift-valley limestone catchment. These parameters are stable across the lake's extensive surface, and the species, being lake-wide, inhabits all of them.

Feeding

FishBase assigns Stigmatochromis pholidophorus a trophic level of 3.5 ± 0.37 se, calculated from food items — a value that places it firmly in the predator tier above the herbivore-invertivore continuum of Malawi's mbuna. malawi.si is more explicit: it describes the species as carnivorous, feeding on juvenile fishes and smaller cichlids. The hunting technique is the most distinctive thing about this fish. Rather than chasing or ambushing prey from a fixed hide, Stigmatochromis pholidophorus adopts a hovering patrol strategy: it hangs in mid-water roughly 19.5–39.5 in above the sandy substrate, scanning for movement below. When prey is detected — most likely a small cichlid resting on or near the sand — the predator descends in a rapid, near-vertical lunge to seize it. This aerial drop-strike is sufficiently unusual among Malawi cichlids to make the species recognisable on sight in the field. Konings has documented the behaviour directly in the lake, and it is the feature most consistently noted in field accounts. The rounded snout and the protrusible jaws are the working tools: the blunt face may serve to conceal the protrusible gape until the last moment, and the moderate jaw size is consistent with a diet of small-to-medium cichlid fry and juveniles rather than the very large prey taken by Rhamphochromis or Tyrannochromis.

Mating

Like the great majority of Lake Malawi haplochromines, Stigmatochromis pholidophorus is a polygynous maternal mouthbrooder without lasting pair bonds. Males assume breeding coloration and court passing females; malawi.si notes that intraspecific aggression rises noticeably during courtship, making the breeding period the most demanding time for tankmates and for subordinate males. Males do not excavate the elaborate bower pits characteristic of Stigmatochromis woodi (which constructs sand craters); Stigmatochromis pholidophorus spawns over sandy or transitional ground without the same degree of territory construction, although a courting male will defend the immediate spawning area. Females are described as wary and fast-moving; the pair interaction is brief. In the aquarium malawi.si recommends keeping the species as a single pair or as a small harem (one male to two or three females) in a large tank, noting that the male's aggression during breeding can be intense enough to injure females in confined space.

Breeding

Stigmatochromis pholidophorus is a maternal (ovophilous) mouthbrooder, following the reproductive strategy universal among Malawi's non-mbuna haplochromines. After courtship over the male's spawning site, the female lays her eggs on the substrate, takes them immediately into her buccal cavity, and then collects sperm — typically using the egg-spot cues on the male's anal fin — to fertilise the clutch. She then broods the developing eggs and larvae in her mouth for approximately three to four weeks, not feeding during this period, before releasing free-swimming fry. Clutch size has not been formally documented in the literature for this species; as a fish of moderate size (around 5.5–7 in) it likely produces clutches of several dozen eggs, consistent with other mid-sized Malawi mouthbrooders, but this is an extrapolation from size class rather than a measured value. [NOTE: clutch size not published — habitat-typical estimate for a species of this size is ~40–80 eggs; the formal literature has not confirmed this for Stigmatochromis pholidophorus.] In captivity, malawi.si suggests that brooding females be given the option of holding to term without disturbance. Released fry are at the standard haplochromine stage of development — free-swimming but small — and receive no further parental care. The species has been bred in captivity, but accounts are scarce given how infrequently it is exported.

In the aquarium

Stigmatochromis pholidophorus is rarely kept, and prospective keepers should be clear-eyed about that from the outset: it is infrequently exported, appears sporadically in specialist Malawi cichlid suppliers, and there is very limited captive-care documentation to draw on. What follows is grounded in what is known about the species combined with standard husbandry principles for large predatory Malawi haplochromines ("Haps") — generalising from that group where species-specific data is thin, and flagged as such.

Tank size is the first and most important constraint. Males reach approximately 7 in TL in the wild, and the species' mid-water patrolling and drop-strike hunting style means it needs genuine open-water volume — a tank of at least 78.5 in in length and 105–130 US gal is the minimum to consider for a single adult or a small group. Décor should mirror the species' natural intermediate-zone habitat: a deep sand substrate (2–3 in minimum of fine lake-sand or equivalent) is essential, with a scatter of larger rocks at one or both ends to break sightlines and provide territory anchors for a male in breeding condition. The central and mid-water portions of the tank should be kept open. Avoid heavy planting or driftwood decor — this is an alkaline-water rift-lake fish and the tannin-releasing, soft-acid associations of wood are both ecologically inaccurate and chemically counterproductive.

Water chemistry must match the Lake Malawi envelope: pH 7.8–8.6, temperature 75–82 °F, and high carbonate hardness (KH 10–20 dKH is typical for Malawi-specific setups). Rift-lake salt mixes or cichlid buffer salts help maintain these parameters if tap water is soft. Efficient, high-volume biological filtration is non-negotiable: a piscivore produces a heavy bioload, and Malawi cichlids are notably susceptible to Malawi bloat — a condition associated with bacterial or protozoan infection of the gut, almost always precipitated by poor water quality or nutritional stress. Regular water changes of 20–30% per week and keeping nitrate below 20 mg/L are the primary practical defences against it.

Tankmate selection requires serious thought. Stigmatochromis pholidophorus is a piscivore — it eats smaller fish, including smaller cichlids. Any tankmate that can fit into an adult's mouth is at risk, including many standard mbuna species kept by Malawi enthusiasts and any juveniles of any cichlid species. Suitable companions are large-bodied Malawi Haps and Aulonocara species of comparable or greater size, avoiding anything noticeably smaller. Highly aggressive or very large predators (e.g., Nimbochromis, Tyrannochromis) may stress or injure adults. A single male should ideally be kept with two or three females of the same species to dilute his aggression during courtship; keeping two males together in anything but a very large tank typically leads to persistent fighting. Do not mix with mbuna in the same compartment — the aggression mismatch and dietary incompatibility rarely end well.

Diet in captivity should reflect the species' piscivorous nature. Whole silversides, krill, prawn, and quality carnivore pellets are appropriate; feeder fish from unknown sources carry disease risk and should be avoided. Malawi bloat risk is increased by high-fat or high-protein mammal-flesh foods (beef heart, etc.) that some hobbyists still use — these are now widely discouraged for Malawi cichlids. Breeding in captivity follows the standard maternal mouthbrooder pattern: a receptive female will hold a clutch for three to four weeks before releasing free-swimming fry. Brooding females should not be disturbed into stripping early; if the male's aggression is severe enough to threaten her while she is holding, providing rock cover or temporary dividers is preferable to forced removal. Given the species' scarcity in the hobby, successful spawns are worth documenting and sharing with the Malawi specialist community.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Stigmatochromis pholidophorus as Least Concern (assessed 19 June 2018 by Ad Konings and Jacqueline Kazembe; iucnredlist.org/species/60950/155046419), on the basis of its lake-wide distribution across all three Malawi shoreline countries and the absence of any species-specific population threat. It carries no CITES listing. Ornamental collection and export is negligible — malawi.si describes it as 'not established in the aquarium hobby' and notes it has been exported only infrequently under informal trade names. This Least Concern assessment sits against a backdrop of genuine and growing pressure on Lake Malawi as an ecosystem. The lake supports one of the world's most species-rich freshwater fish communities — over 800 cichlid species, the majority endemic — while simultaneously sustaining intensive subsurface fisheries that have depleted several commercial demersal stocks. Basin-level reviews document rising surface temperatures and strengthened thermal stratification reducing vertical mixing and thus nutrient flux to the productive upper layer; deforestation in the catchment driving sedimentation and turbidity in shallow nearshore zones; and artisanal fishing pressure bearing heavily on the non-mbuna haplochromines. For a sand-and-transition-zone species like Stigmatochromis pholidophorus, nearshore sedimentation is the most directly applicable threat: increased turbidity from run-off degrades the visual hunting environment on which the species' drop-strike strategy depends, and smothering of sandy substrate reduces the microhabitat available to the small cichlid prey it targets. None of these pressures has been documented as a current population-level threat to this particular fish, but they are the context in which its long-term stability should be understood.
