Tylochromis variabilis is a robust, large-scaled sand-sifting cichlid of the middle and upper Congo basin, one of roughly two dozen species in a structurally conservative African genus that sits near the base of the cichlid family tree rather than within the famous rift-lake radiations. Described by Melanie Stiassny in 1989 from the Ituri River, its name — "the variable one" — is a warning printed on the label: across its sprawling range of Congo tributaries the species varies so widely in body proportions and in how heavily its pharyngeal crushing-mill is built that no single set of measurements cleanly captures it, and at least one later study has wondered aloud whether it is distinct at all from its western neighbour Tylochromis lateralis. Like all its congeners it is a maternal mouthbrooder that forms no pair bond, the female alone carrying a small clutch of large eggs.

Taxonomy & naming

Tylochromis variabilis was described by the American ichthyologist Melanie L. J. Stiassny in 1989, in her comprehensive monograph "A taxonomic revision of the African genus Tylochromis (Labroidei, Cichlidae); with notes on the anatomy and relationships of the group" (Annales du Musée Royal de l'Afrique Centrale, Série Sciences Zoologiques, vol. 258). The type locality is Avakubi on the Ituri River in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and the holotype (MRAC 2865) is held at the Royal Museum for Central Africa in Tervuren, Belgium, backed by an unusually large paratype series scattered across the AMNH, the Natural History Museum in London, the Field Museum, the MCZ, the Paris museum and the Smithsonian — a reflection of how many specimens Stiassny needed to circumscribe so variable a taxon. The genus Tylochromis itself was erected far earlier, by Charles Tate Regan in 1920, with the name combining Greek tylos (a callus or knob) and chromis (an old name for a perch-like fish), pointing at the thickened, swollen structures Regan saw in the head and pharyngeal apparatus. Within the family, Stiassny's later work (American Museum Novitates 2993, 1990) placed Tylochromis near the base of the African cichlid tree, well outside the haplochromine and lamprologine assemblages — these are members of the subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae, sometimes treated as the sole tribe Tylochromini. The species' status is not entirely settled: Decru and colleagues (2017), revising the fishes of the Itimbiri basin, flagged Tylochromis variabilis as a possible junior synonym of the older Tylochromis lateralis (Boulenger, 1898), a tension that the original epithet — chosen precisely for the taxon's variability — almost predicts.

Morphology

This is a deep-bodied, laterally compressed, large-scaled cichlid built to a heavy benthic plan: a steep forehead, a comparatively small and low-set mouth, and the robust frame typical of the genus. FishBase records a maximum length of about 11 in (an unsexed specimen), placing it among the larger Tylochromis though well short of the Tanganyikan giant Tylochromis polylepis. Meristics, per Stiassny's diagnosis, run to 14–16 dorsal spines, 11–16 dorsal soft rays, 3 anal spines and 7–8 anal soft rays, with 28–29 vertebrae and 33–35 lateral-line scales; the gill rakers number 15–16 along the lower limb of the first arch, the entire premaxillary oral valve is present, and the dorsal fin is long, spanning roughly 55–66% of standard length. The defining genus character is the lower pharyngeal jaw — the throat-mill used to process hard or tough food — and it is exactly here that Tylochromis variabilis earns its name: Stiassny diagnosed the species partly on the wide range of body forms and degrees of pharyngeal-jaw development encompassed by the material she examined, a variability so pronounced that it became the taxon's distinguishing feature rather than an inconvenience. There is no documented, reliable external sexual dimorphism beyond the general mouthbrooder pattern (ripe females swelling with eggs, brooding females carrying a distended buccal cavity); the sexes are not described as differing markedly in colour or finnage, and the species is not a hobby fish whose dimorphism has been catalogued by keepers.

Habitat

Tylochromis variabilis is a freshwater, benthopelagic fish of the middle and upper Congo River basin, and its recorded range is sprawling: FishBase, following Stiassny (1989), lists it from the Sankuru, Sangha, Ubangui, Uele, Kotto, Bomu, Lomami, Aruwimi, Itimbiri, Lindi-Tshopo, Lualaba and upper Lualaba, and southward into the Chambeshi, across Cameroon, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Zambia, with an additional report from the Sangha in the Republic of the Congo. That distribution threads through a string of freshwater ecoregions — the Cuvette Centrale heart of the basin, the Sangha and Uele on its northern margins, the Sudanic Congo–Oubangui–Uele, and the Upper Lualaba and Bangweulu–Mweru systems toward the south. As a riverine member of a genus built around sifting and bottom-grubbing in soft sediment, it is a fish of sandy and muddy bottoms in rivers, channels and floodplain reaches rather than rocky shorelines. Specific in-situ water chemistry has not been published for this species, but the waters of the central and upper Congo it inhabits are warm and generally soft and mildly acidic to near-neutral — broadly in the range of pH 6.0–7.8 and roughly 73–82 °F that characterises lowland Congo tributaries. FishBase carries no measured depth band for the species; as a benthic riverine sifter it is a fish of shallow to moderate depths over its working substrate rather than a deep-water animal.

Feeding

Trophically, Tylochromis variabilis is an opportunistic benthic macrophage — a bottom feeder that takes whatever the sediment yields. Dietary records describe it feeding on plant material, insects, and, to a lesser degree, molluscs, with FishBase estimating a trophic level of about 2.6, squarely that of an omnivore-leaning invertebrate feeder rather than a predator. This fits the genus signature exactly: Tylochromis are sand-sifters and bottom-grubbers equipped with a pharyngeal mill, and the molariform development of that mill across the genus tracks how hard the prey is — species that crush snails and bivalves carry the heaviest molar pads, while those leaning on softer insect larvae and plant matter have lighter ones. Tylochromis variabilis sits in the middle of that spectrum, and its name records the fact that the degree of pharyngeal development varies from population to population, implying a correspondingly flexible diet. In community terms it is a roving generalist of the sandy and muddy bottoms, working the substrate for invertebrates and organic material rather than holding a fixed feeding territory — a functional outsider to the specialised algae-scrapers and piscivores that dominate the better-known cichlid faunas elsewhere in central Africa.

Mating

Tylochromis variabilis is a maternal mouthbrooder that does not form a pair bond — the social and reproductive template of the genus, explicitly reported for the species in the literature. In practical terms this means there is no lasting partnership between the sexes: a male fertilises a female's clutch and his role essentially ends there, while the female alone takes the eggs into her mouth and assumes all subsequent care. This is the classic African mouthbrooding system seen in haplochromines and tilapiines, not the biparental cave- or substrate-spawning of the Tanganyikan lamprologines, and it again places Tylochromis on the older, more generalised side of the family. The detailed courtship behaviour — whether males defend transient spawning sites, how females choose mates, the role of any nuptial colour — has not been documented for this particular species in the wild, and that gap is worth stating plainly rather than filling with inference. What can be said with confidence is the breeding architecture: ephemeral mating encounters, no pair bond, and the entire investment carried by the female.

Breeding

As a maternal mouthbrooder, the female of Tylochromis variabilis incubates and guards her brood inside her buccal cavity, releasing well-developed free-swimming fry after a period of oral incubation. No clutch count has been published specifically for Tylochromis variabilis, but the genus follows the mouthbrooder trade-off of few, large, yolky eggs over many small ones: in the better-studied congener Tylochromis polylepis, females have been observed carrying on the order of 100 eggs roughly 0.5 in in diameter — a small clutch of large eggs that produces robust, well-advanced fry rather than numerous vulnerable larvae. A comparable genus-typical fecundity (on the order of tens to ~100 large eggs) is the reasonable expectation here, flagged as inference from congeners rather than a measured figure for this species. Parental care is maternal and post-release brooding is likely (mouthbrooders commonly take fry back into the buccal cavity at the first sign of threat for a period after they are first released), but the specifics — incubation duration, fry size at release, the length of any post-release guarding — have not been recorded for Tylochromis variabilis. Spawning triggers in the wild are undocumented for the species and, given that it is essentially absent from the aquarium hobby, no captive breeding account exists to fill the picture.

In the aquarium

Tylochromis variabilis is, for all practical purposes, not an aquarium fish. It is a Congo-basin riverine species of interest chiefly to ichthyologists and museum collections; it is not bred for the trade, only rarely (if ever) collected for it, and there is no body of hobbyist keeping experience to draw on. Anyone who did acquire one would be keeping a large, sediment-dependent sand-sifter, and the husbandry would follow the general Tylochromis profile rather than anything species-specific. That means a long tank with a generous footprint rather than height — a fish approaching 11 in that constantly works the bottom needs floor space, realistically a six-foot, 450-litre-plus aquarium for an adult — floored with an open bed of fine sand it can sift, since these are genuine substrate workers that will be miserable and under-stimulated in a rock-stuffed setup. Strong mechanical filtration is important to handle the detritus a sifter kicks up, and good oxygenation matters: Tylochromis as a group are noted for a marked intolerance of low dissolved oxygen, so a crowded, under-aerated tank is a real hazard. Water should mirror its warm, soft-to-neutral Congo origins (roughly pH 6.0–7.8, 73–82 °F) rather than the hard alkaline conditions suited to the rift-lake members of the genus. Diet would be a varied omnivore regime — quality sinking pellets, frozen invertebrates and some plant matter — matching its natural mix of insects, plant material and the occasional mollusc. The honest verdict: this is a fish to read about, not to keep; it has no established place in the hobby and asks for more space and water-quality discipline than its modest appearance suggests.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Tylochromis variabilis as Least Concern, assessed on 16 February 2009 by T. Moelants and published in the 2010 assessment, with the population trend listed as unknown. The rationale is straightforward: it is a widespread species distributed across a large area of the middle and upper Congo basin — spanning Cameroon, the Central African Republic, the Republic of the Congo, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Zambia — with no specific, severe threats identified and no evidence of significant decline. It carries no CITES or CMS listing and is harmless to humans. As a wide-ranging generalist of Congo tributaries, it is far less exposed than the basin's many narrow-range endemics. The broader caveat, common to Congo-basin fishes, is that the region's freshwater habitats face mounting pressure from deforestation, sedimentation, artisanal and commercial fishing, and (in mining districts) water-quality degradation, while remaining comparatively under-studied and under-monitored. None of these is documented as a present, population-level danger to this species, but its conservation picture should be read against that backdrop of a vast, biodiverse, and incompletely surveyed river system. The lingering taxonomic question — whether Tylochromis variabilis is a good species or a synonym of Tylochromis lateralis — is itself a reminder of how much basic work on the Congo's cichlids remains to be done.
