Taxonomy & naming
Wallaciia compressiceps was described by the Dutch ichthyologist Alex Ploeg in 1986, in a paper that revised the pike cichlids of the Tocantins River of Pará, Brazil and named four new species (Beaufortia 36(5): 57–80). The holotype, INPA 855, is held at the Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazônia in Manaus, and the type material came from the lower Rio Tocantins. The species epithet records its single most striking feature — a markedly flattened head and body — and Ploeg placed it among the so-called dwarf pikes, a loose assemblage of miniature Crenicichla allied to Crenicichla wallacii. For more than a century the genus Crenicichla, erected by Johann Jakob Heckel in 1840, was a sprawling catch-all of over ninety nominal pike cichlids. A long-running effort to break it into natural units culminated in Varella, Kullander, Menezes, Oliveira and López-Fernández's integrative phylogeny of 2023 (Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society 198: 982–1034), which split the old genus across several lineages. That work transferred the dwarf-pike clade — compressiceps among them — into the resurrected genus Wallaciia, named for its type species C. (now Wallaciia) wallacii. FishBase and the Catalog of Fishes have adopted Wallaciia compressiceps as the valid binomial. Because the change is recent and the entire aquarium literature, the IUCN assessment, and decades of breeding reports all use Crenicichla, that name is retained here as the heading, with the new combination noted for clarity.
Morphology
This is a genuine dwarf: FishBase lists a maximum of 2 in standard length, and the fish is usually cited in the hobby at roughly 3–4.5 in total length, with experienced keepers reporting adults that 'max out under four inches' and the largest, cigar-shaped males reaching about 4.5 inches (~4.5 in TL). As the name promises, the body is strongly laterally compressed and the head conspicuously flattened — a slimmer profile than the more cylindrical larger pikes. The species is unmistakable among the dwarfs for its colour: the body carries roughly seven broad dark vertical bars that the fish can switch, almost at will, against a uniform charcoal-grey ground, while the unpaired fins are boldly striped in black on a warm orange background. Like other pike cichlids it has the elongate, large-mouthed build of an ambush hunter, with a long dorsal fin and a jaw lined with rows of small recurved teeth. Sexual dimorphism is clear: males grow larger, are more elongate and cigar-shaped, and carry brighter, more strongly striped fins, while ripe females develop a distended, reddened belly — reminiscent of a gravid Pelvicachromis — that is the surest sign of breeding condition.
Habitat
Wallaciia compressiceps is a Brazilian endemic of the lower Amazon, recorded only from the lower Rio Tocantins and the Rio Itacaiúnas in the state of Pará, where it lives sympatrically with another small rheophilic pike, Crenicichla cyclostoma. What sets it apart from most dwarf pikes is its biotope. Where the Amazonian and Guianan dwarfs (Crenicichla wallacii, Crenicichla notophthalmus and kin) haunt slow, weedy, leaf-littered backwaters, compressiceps is a fish of moving, rocky water rather than still, vegetated margins. Within that specialised group of Tocantins rheophiles, though, it sits toward the gentler end: field accounts describe it favouring stretches with a gentle current, over calm sandy or stony ground, rather than the torrential overhangs and rapids favoured by its more sedentary relative C. cametana. The lower Tocantins is a clearwater river, and the chemistry the species tolerates is soft and acidic to near-neutral: FishBase gives a pH range of about 5.5–7.2 with temperatures around 75–81 °F, while hobby sources push the acidic end lower (pH 5.0–6.8) and report a soft hardness of roughly 2–8 °dH. These are warm, well-oxygenated, low-mineral waters typical of the Brazilian highland-drainage clearwater systems. The species lives in shallow river margins and rapids — a documented depth band of roughly 0–16 ft for this sort of rocky, current-swept shoreline — rather than in deep open channels. Field observers have also noted that, unlike many small cichlids, it makes little use of large caves or gaps between rocks even where these are available — plausibly because those refuges are already occupied by the much larger, potentially predatory Crenicichla species sharing the same stretch of river.
Feeding
Like all pike cichlids, compressiceps has the elongate, large-mouthed build of an ambush predator, and FishBase places it at a trophic level near 3.1. But its jaws are notably short and weak compared with the large congeners the genus is known for, and comparative work on its dentition and jaw morphology concludes that, among the Tocantins dwarf pikes, it is the most strongly specialised toward invertebrate prey — in the wild it appears to feed almost exclusively on aquatic insects and small crustaceans rather than other fish. It lies quietly among the rocks and sweeps out to seize passing prey, and is reported to have good low-light vision and to hunt readily after dark. In the aquarium this translates to a fish that is not a serious threat to similarly sized tankmates on dietary grounds, though its predatory instincts still make very small fish (well under half its length) an easy target of opportunity. Within its rocky-rapids community it occupies the small-predator niche, working the interstices of the boulder field for insect larvae and crustaceans rather than competing with the bottom-grazing loricariids that share the same habitat.
Mating
Outside of breeding, compressiceps can be kept peaceably with similarly sized fish, but at maturity it becomes intensely territorial and, for its size, remarkably belligerent — keepers who start with a group of juveniles routinely watch them 'murder their way down' to a single surviving pair. Wild males are reported to hold disproportionately large territories for so small a fish and to chase off rivals with real energy, which likely explains why the species does not tolerate crowding well even in a spacious tank. Pair formation is fraught: two fish thrown together in a small tank often remain mutually incompatible and may injure or kill one another. The proven trick, repeated across breeding reports, is to give a tentative pair a community of larger, peaceful 'target' fish that are big enough to be intimidated but too robust to be harmed; their presence diffuses the pikes' aggression onto an outside party and lets a genuine pair bond cement, often within a day. Courtship itself is a distinctive, interesting affair — a head-down, body-shaking display by the female, again strongly recalling the West African Pelvicachromis dwarfs — and it is the ripening female, her belly swollen and flushed rose-red, who drives the proceedings and selects the spawning site.
Breeding
Wallaciia compressiceps is a biparental cave spawner, not a mouthbrooder. The pair seeks out a sheltered cavity — a rock crevice, a tangle of wood, or in the aquarium an inverted flowerpot or a propped-up clay saucer — and the female attaches the eggs to its roof or walls. The egg attachment is itself unusual: rather than being pasted flat in the usual Neotropical manner, the large, often orange eggs are suspended by a thread-like adhesive filament from the top of the cave, a 'hung' arrangement otherwise reminiscent of some West African dwarf cichlids. Clutches are small, in keeping with the fish's size — Delores Schehr's account of the first documented American spawning records about 25 large orange eggs, and 25–50 is typical, though a related dwarf form has produced 400-plus. The female tends and fans the eggs while the male guards the territory; eggs hatch in roughly two to three days and the fry become free-swimming a few days after that, the exact timing varying with temperature. Parental care is biparental throughout, but the division of labour shifts once fry appear: broader accounts of this group of dwarf pikes describe both parents defending the breeding territory up to that point, after which territorial defence becomes almost entirely the male's job, freeing the female to concentrate on shepherding the fry as a tight school and steering them back to the cave at any threat. Keepers note that care is markedly stronger when target fish are present to focus the parents' defensive instinct. Spawning is triggered by conditioning a compatible pair hard on live and frozen foods in warm, soft, clean water; the chief obstacle is rarely the spawning itself but surviving the courtship without one mate killing the other.
In the aquarium
Wallaciia compressiceps is among the most rewarding of the dwarf pikes, and one of the few collected and bred with any regularity, but its temperament demands respect. It reached the hobby comparatively late — it was first imported alive in 1990, the third of the small Crenicichla dwarfs to enter the trade after two others that had until then been brought in only sporadically. Despite a maximum length under about 4.5 in it is exceptionally active and fast, swimming far more than most fish its size, and it is fiercely aggressive toward its own kind — so it needs a tank disproportionately large for its body. A footprint of about 35.5 in (a 36-inch, ~160-litre tank) is a sensible minimum for a pair, and more space makes pairing and breeding far safer. Aquascape the tank as the rapids biotope it comes from: a sand or fine-gravel base, plenty of broken-up sightlines from rockwork, driftwood and scattered leaves, and at least one good cave such as an inverted flowerpot or propped clay saucer for spawning. Plants are generally left alone, as this is not a habitual digger like the eartheaters.
Water should be warm, soft and clean: 75–81 °F, pH on the acidic side (around 5.5–6.8 is ideal, though the fish tolerates up to about 7.2), and low hardness of roughly 2–8 °dH. Like all dwarf pikes it is sensitive to dissolved waste — keepers consistently link poor maintenance to head-and-lateral-line erosion ('hole-in-the-head'), so regular generous water changes are essential. Diet is straightforward provided live or frozen foods feature heavily: wild-caught fish may at first refuse dry food, while tank-bred specimens take most offerings. A varied menu of bloodworm, earthworm, mealworm and small crustaceans keeps colour and condition high; an all-dry diet is a known cause of poor health. The species is an enthusiastic eater with little apparent off-switch, and longtime keepers caution against reading that enthusiasm as hunger — it is easy to overfeed.
Tankmate selection is the crux. Outside spawning the fish is reasonably peaceful and will ignore anything too large to swallow, but it must not be housed with fish small enough to be eaten, nor with notorious fin-nippers that will shred its long, showy fins. The classic failure is intraspecific: rival conspecifics, or an ill-matched pair in cramped quarters, fight to the death. Robust, peaceful, similarly sized or larger companions that can act as targets — and a tank large enough for a beaten fish to escape — are the keys to keeping it successfully.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Wallaciia compressiceps as Data Deficient (assessed 7 November 2018 by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade, ICMBio). The species is endemic to Brazil and known only from the lower Rio Tocantins and the Rio Itacaiúnas in Pará, a small and now heavily modified range. The Data Deficient rating reflects a specific uncertainty: the fish has not been recovered in scientific collections from the Tocantins since the river was impounded by the giant Tucuruí hydroelectric dam, and the evidence on whether the dam has harmed its population is conflicting — there is simply not enough information to assign a threat category. The listed pressures are exactly those of a small-range rapids specialist in a dammed river: hydroelectric development and dam/water management, alterations to the natural flow regime, and harvesting (including for the ornamental trade). It carries no CITES listing. As a clearwater-rapids endemic of a single drainage that has already lost much of its free-flowing habitat behind Tucuruí, it is inherently more vulnerable than the wide-ranging Amazonian generalists, and its status warrants the precaution the Data Deficient flag implies.
