Taxonomy & naming
Acestrocephalus nigrifasciatus was described by Naércio A. Menezes in 2006, making it one of the more recently formalised members of the genus. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes recognises Menezes, 2006 as the valid authority; the name is not parenthesised because Menezes placed it directly in Acestrocephalus and it has remained there. The type locality is the Rio Arinos, within the Rio Tapajós drainage, Mato Grosso, Brazil.
Acestrocephalus is a small South American genus in the family Characidae, distinguished from most familiar tetras by its elongated, compressed body and enlarged, recurved teeth — adaptations for seizing prey fish and invertebrates. The genus sits within the broader characid fauna of Amazonia and adjacent drainages. The specific epithet combines the Latin niger (black) and fasciatus (banded), a straightforward reference to the dark transverse stripes on the body. No widely accepted common name is established in the hobby or literature.
Morphology
Acestrocephalus nigrifasciatus reaches a maximum recorded standard length of 3.5 in, making it a compact member of its genus. The body is elongated and laterally compressed in the characid manner, with a pointed snout, a large mouth equipped with recurved teeth suited for gripping prey, and a forked tail typical of active-swimming predators.
The most conspicuous feature, as the species epithet promises, is a series of dark vertical bars or bands crossing the flanks. Ground colour is pale or silvery. Fins are generally clear to lightly pigmented. Sexual dimorphism has not been thoroughly characterised in the published literature, and data on colouration differences between males and females are sparse.
Habitat
The species is documented from the Rio Arinos and the broader Rio Juruena–Rio Tapajós basin in Mato Grosso, Brazil. The Tapajós is a major right-bank tributary of the Amazon, draining a large portion of the central Brazilian Shield. Waters within this basin include clear, nutrient-poor blackwaters as well as more turbid whitewater channels depending on location and season.
FishBase categorises A. nigrifasciatus as benthopelagic and freshwater, occupying the water column in tropical lowland conditions. Detailed habitat preferences — substrate associations, depth range, vegetation type — are not well documented in the available literature, reflecting the generally sparse research attention this and related small predatory characids have received.
Feeding
As a member of Acestrocephalus — a genus defined by its predatory dentition — A. nigrifasciatus is presumed to be a carnivore feeding primarily on small fish and large aquatic invertebrates in the wild. The recurved, fang-like teeth of these characids are specialised for seizing slippery prey rather than for processing plant material or small crustaceans in the manner of omnivorous tetras.

By inference from the broader Characidae reproductive pattern, breeding would involve egg scattering among fine-leaved vegetation or over open substrate, adhesive or slightly adhesive eggs, and no parental care — adults in many predatory characid species will prey on their own eggs and fry if left together.
Aquarists who have kept related Acestrocephalus species report that conditioning adults on a diet of live or frozen fish-based foods and then providing a large, well-planted breeding tank with slightly cooler, softer water as a trigger is the most likely route to spawning. Whether such approaches would succeed with A. nigrifasciatus specifically is unknown; the combination of the species' rarity in trade and limited husbandry documentation means breeding guidance remains speculative.
In the aquarium
Acestrocephalus nigrifasciatus is essentially absent from mainstream hobby trade and literature; it does not appear as an established aquarium species. The occasional specimen may reach specialist importers who handle unusual South American characids alongside shipments from the Tapajós drainage, but it is not a species aquarists are likely to encounter in general retail channels.
Where related Acestrocephalus species have been kept, the requirements are those expected of a mid-sized predatory characid: a tank long enough for active swimming, excellent water quality, subdued or dappled lighting to reduce stress, and tankmates too large to be eaten — or none at all, as these fish are generally incompatible with anything of similar or smaller size. Feeding on prepared or frozen foods requires conditioning from live prey. Water parameters consistent with the Tapajós basin — warm (75–82 °F), soft to moderately hard, circumneutral to slightly acidic pH — would be the sensible starting point. This is a specialist's fish rather than a community-tank subject.
Conservation
Acestrocephalus nigrifasciatus is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated November 2018. A Data Deficient rating indicates that available information is insufficient to make a reliable estimate of extinction risk — not that the species is necessarily secure, but that the data required for classification are lacking.
The Tapajós basin, the species' known range, is a system under significant anthropogenic pressure from deforestation, gold mining (garimpo), dam construction — including the Teles Pires and São Manoel complexes upstream in the Rio Juruena corridor — and associated sedimentation and water-quality change. Whether A. nigrifasciatus has been specifically affected by these pressures, and whether its populations are stable or declining, is not documented. Targeted field surveys and population assessments would be required before its conservation status could be meaningfully revised.
