Taxonomy & naming

Acestrocephalus sardina was originally described by Henry Weed Fowler in 1913, based on material from the Madeira River system of Brazil; the valid name carries a parenthetical authority because Fowler's original placement has since been superseded by the current genus assignment. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Catalog of Fishes, CAS) records the valid name as Acestrocephalus sardina (Fowler, 1913).

The genus Acestrocephalus belongs to the family Characidae and encompasses a set of elongate, predatory characins distributed across the major river systems of tropical South America. A modern taxonomic redescription of the species (Menezes et al.) refined the diagnosis relative to related species, particularly Acestrocephalus nigrifasciatus, noting distinguishing meristic features including a lower number of scale rows above the lateral line (10–12 in A. sardina versus 13–14 in A. nigrifasciatus).
