Taxonomy & naming
Astyanacinus moorii was described by George Albert Boulenger in 1892 from specimens obtained in the upper Paraguay River drainage, with the type locality given as the Chapala Plateau, Mato Grosso, Brazil. The lectotype is held at the Natural History Museum, London (BMNH 1892.4.20.51). Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) treats the name as valid in the genus Astyanacinus, and the species is the only member of that genus currently recognized.
The placement of Astyanacinus within the broader family has been debated. Eschmeyer's Catalog notes the genus within Acestrorhamphidae (subfamily Grundulinae) in some classifications, reflecting ongoing instability in the higher systematics of the large and heterogeneous superfamily that encompasses the tetras, piranhas, and their relatives. For the purposes of this site the species is treated within Characidae sensu lato. Because the original description placed it in a different genus — it was described as Astyanax moorii before being moved — the authority is given in parentheses: (Boulenger, 1892).
Morphology
Astyanacinus moorii is a slender, moderately compressed characid reaching a maximum recorded standard length of around 4 in, though most individuals encountered in collections are smaller. The body shape is elongate relative to the deep-bodied profile typical of many Astyanax, giving it a more fusiform look suited to active swimming in clear riverine environments.
Coloration in preserved material and life is predominantly silvery, with a dark lateral stripe or diffuse midlateral band running from the shoulder region toward the caudal peduncle, where it typically intensifies. A small, dark humeral blotch may be present behind the opercle, a character common across a wide range of Neotropical characids. The fins are generally hyaline. Specific meristic data for this species are sparse in the hobby literature; detailed counts are available in the primary description and subsequent ichthyological revisions.
Habitat
In the wild Astyanacinus moorii is associated with the upper Paraguay River basin, which drains the southern Brazilian Pantanal region and the Chapala Plateau of Mato Grosso, with the range extending into Bolivia. This basin is characterized by seasonally flooded savanna, gallery forests, and clear to moderately turbid streams running over sand and gravel substrates.
Like many Neotropical characids of this region, A. moorii likely experiences marked seasonal variation in water conditions: cooler and more oxygenated during the dry season when rivers contract, and warmer, more turbid, and potentially lower in dissolved oxygen during the wet-season flood pulse that defines Pantanal hydrology. Specific field measurements for the microhabitats this species uses are not well documented in the available literature.
Feeding
Detailed dietary studies for Astyanacinus moorii are not available in the accessible literature. By analogy with closely related Astyanax-group characids of similar body form and habitat, it is likely an opportunistic omnivore taking small aquatic invertebrates, terrestrial insects that fall to the water surface, algae, and plant material in proportion to seasonal availability.
In the aquarium it can be expected to accept standard characid foods: quality flake or micro-pellet, frozen and live foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworm, and some vegetable-based foods. A varied diet is advisable to maintain condition.
Mating
No specific observations of mating behavior in Astyanacinus moorii have been published in the accessible literature. Based on its membership in the broader Astyanax-affiliated clade and general characid biology, the species is expected to be an egg-scattering open spawner without parental care.
Males in breeding condition may develop small nuptial tubercles on the pectoral fins or head, a character seen in many related characids, though this has not been specifically documented for A. moorii. Spawning likely occurs among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or over sandy substrates, following the typical pattern of Neotropical open-water egg scatterers.
Breeding
Astyanacinus moorii has not been documented as being bred in the aquarium hobby to any significant degree, and no detailed breeding accounts appear in the available literature. The species is rarely encountered in the trade, and most knowledge of its reproduction must therefore be inferred from the biology of related Astyanax-group characids.
By analogy, spawning would involve the female scattering small, non-adhesive or slightly adhesive eggs among vegetation or over the substrate, with the male fertilizing them in the water column. The adults would not guard the eggs or fry, so removal of adults or transfer of eggs to a separate rearing tank would be standard practice. Incubation times and fry care requirements are not specifically documented for this species.
In the aquarium
Astyanacinus moorii is an uncommon species in the aquarium trade and is rarely available commercially. It is held primarily by specialist collectors and public aquaria with an interest in Neotropical ichthyofauna from the Paraguay drainage or the broader Pantanal region.
For the specialist keeper, conditions suited to the upper Paraguay basin would be appropriate: soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water in the range of 72–82 °F, good filtration, and regular water changes. As a characid from clear, well-oxygenated streams it likely appreciates moderate current and high oxygen levels. Like virtually all characids it is a shoaling species and should be kept in groups of six or more to express natural behavior and reduce stress. Its rarity in the trade means that hobbyists interested in keeping it would generally need to source it through specialist breeders or importers dealing in wild or unusual Neotropical species.
Conservation
Astyanacinus moorii is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, reflecting a distribution across the upper Paraguay River basin — a large, still relatively intact drainage system — without documented evidence of a rapid population decline that would warrant a more threatened category.
The upper Paraguay basin and the Pantanal wetlands it drains are, however, subject to ongoing pressures from agricultural expansion, water abstraction, and pollution associated with soy and cattle farming in the Brazilian Cerrado. While A. moorii itself is not a target of the ornamental fish trade, the long-term health of its habitat depends on watershed-level conservation efforts in one of South America's most ecologically significant but threatened freshwater systems.
