Knodus chapadae is a small characid from the upper Paraguay River basin of central Brazil, inhabiting the clear-to-turbid streams and headwaters of the Cerrado savanna biome. Reaching barely 2 in in standard length, it is a generalist of the sort that underpins stream food webs — feeding opportunistically on aquatic insects, terrestrial invertebrates, plant matter, and detritus, shifting its diet with the season and whatever the current delivers. Assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN in 2018, it is seldom encountered in the aquarium trade but represents the quietly successful small-tetra archetype: adaptable, mobile, and at home in the dynamic chemistry of Cerrado waterways.

Taxonomy & naming

Knodus chapadae was originally described as Astyanax chapadae by Henry Weed Fowler in 1906, a period when the genus Astyanax served as a catch-all for many small South American characids. The species was subsequently transferred to Knodus, a genus erected to accommodate a cluster of small, slender characids from the central and western lowlands of South America. The valid name is therefore Knodus chapadae (Fowler, 1906), with parenthetical authority indicating the original placement has changed.

Knodus belongs to the family Characidae, the largest family of freshwater fishes, and sits within the broadly defined 'stevardiin' or central characid radiation, though generic boundaries in this portion of the tree have shifted repeatedly as molecular phylogenies have accumulated. The genus name Knodus has no widely published etymology but appears to derive from a shortening or modification used by the describing author; the species epithet chapadae refers to the Chapada — a high, dissected plateau landscape of central Brazil, specifically the Chapada dos Parecis and surrounding tablelands that form the headwaters of several major river systems including the upper Paraguay.

Morphology

Knodus chapadae is a small, slender-bodied characid reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 2 in. Like other members of the genus it is laterally compressed, with a relatively elongated profile compared with the deeper-bodied Astyanax relatives from which it was separated. The caudal fin is forked, the dorsal fin sits roughly over the midpoint of the body, and the adipose fin — a defining character of the Characidae — is present.

The coloration is typical of the cryptic, small-stream characid: a silvery to pale straw background with a diffuse dark lateral stripe running from behind the opercle toward the caudal peduncle, often with some concentration of dark pigment at the caudal base. There is no striking sexual colour dichromatism reported in the literature, though females are likely deeper-bodied when gravid, as is common in the family. The species lacks the enlarged teeth of piscivorous relatives and is not distinguished by bright iridescent colours, reflecting its role as a mobile, invertebrate-feeding stream generalist rather than a display specialist.

Habitat

Knodus chapadae occurs in the upper Paraguay River basin in Brazil, in the stream networks draining the Chapada plateau and associated Cerrado lowlands. The Cerrado is the vast tropical savanna of the Brazilian interior, a biome defined by pronounced wet and dry seasons, and its streams are ecologically dynamic: clear and shallow in the dry season, turbid and fast after the rains, often flowing over sandy or rocky substrates with gallery forest and riparian vegetation along the banks.

These are benthopelagic fishes — they spend time near the substrate as well as in the water column — and they are found in streams of varying size and character across the upper basin. Water chemistry in Cerrado streams is typically soft and mildly acidic to neutral, influenced by the largely sandy, nutrient-poor soils of the plateau. Aquatic vegetation may be sparse in the main current but denser in marginal pools and backwaters, and the gallery forest contributes leaf litter, woody debris, and a heavy rain of terrestrial insects that form an important dietary subsidy for small fishes.

Feeding

Knodus chapadae is a confirmed dietary generalist. A published feeding study (Neves et al. 2021) conducted on Cerrado stream populations found the species consumes aquatic invertebrates — predominantly insects in larval and adult stages — alongside terrestrial invertebrates falling from the gallery forest, vegetal matter (including seeds and plant fragments), and detritus. The mix of prey shifts with environmental conditions: during the wet season, when invertebrate drift and allochthonous input increase, the diet broadens; in the dry season, with reduced flow and more restricted access, the fish exploits whatever is available, demonstrating the trophic plasticity characteristic of resilient stream generalists.

This opportunism likely underpins its broad distribution through the upper Paraguay basin. Rather than depending on a specific food resource, the species tracks overall invertebrate and organic matter availability, which fluctuates strongly with the seasonal hydrology of the Cerrado. In an aquarium context it would be expected to accept a wide range of small prepared and live foods without difficulty.

Mating

No detailed field studies of mating behaviour in Knodus chapadae are available in the published literature. Based on the biology of closely related small characids, the species is almost certainly an egg-scattering open spawner. Males and females in spawning condition would typically engage in brief chasing and side-by-side swimming, with eggs scattered into fine-leaved aquatic vegetation, submerged roots, or current-swept substrates, and fertilised externally without courtship structures or pair bonding.

In the seasonally variable Cerrado streams, spawning is likely triggered or intensified by the onset of the wet season, when rising water levels, increased food availability, and longer days provide the environmental cues that synchronise reproduction. This pattern is common across small neotropical characids in seasonally flooded systems. Adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs typical of the genus would settle among plant debris or gravel following spawning.

Breeding

Knodus chapadae has not been reported as a commonly bred aquarium fish, and detailed breeding accounts are absent from the hobbyist literature. By analogy with other small, open-spawning characids it would be expected to breed without great difficulty under appropriate conditions: soft-to-neutral water, a well-planted or mop-equipped tank, and well-conditioned adults fed live or frozen invertebrates.

Eggs would be adhesive and deposited among fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, with no parental care — the adults should be removed after spawning to prevent egg predation. Incubation at tropical temperatures typically takes 24 to 72 hours in small characids, and the emerging fry would require very fine first foods such as infusoria or commercial liquid fry foods before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp. Because the species is seldom kept or bred intentionally, these details remain largely inferred from related taxa rather than documented specifically for K. chapadae.

In the aquarium

Knodus chapadae is not a widely available or commonly kept aquarium fish, and it does not appear regularly in the ornamental trade. Its small size, modest coloration, and lack of distinguishing visual features mean it has little commercial appeal compared with more colourful small tetras, and it is primarily of interest to enthusiasts of South American stream biotopes or those assembling upper Paraguay basin community tanks.

Where kept, it would best suit a soft-water, well-filtered aquarium with fine-leaved vegetation or trailing roots, subdued lighting, and a dark substrate — conditions that replicate Cerrado gallery-forest streams and allow the fish to behave naturally. As a small, active schooling fish it should be kept in groups of six or more. Water temperature in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius and gentle current would be appropriate. Tankmates should be similarly small and peaceful; the fish's slight build makes it vulnerable to competition with larger or more assertive species. Its low profile in the trade means most specimens reaching hobbyists are likely wild-caught, and acclimatisation to aquarium conditions deserves care.

Conservation

Knodus chapadae is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated 07 November 2018. The species is broadly distributed across the upper Paraguay River basin and occurs through a wide range of stream habitats in the Cerrado, which, despite being one of the world's most threatened biospheres, still supports large areas of intact or semi-intact stream network.

The Cerrado has lost more than half its original extent to agricultural conversion, and the savanna streams that support species like K. chapadae face ongoing pressures from deforestation of gallery forest, pesticide and nutrient runoff from soybean and cattle operations, and hydrological alteration. While K. chapadae is not currently considered at risk at the species level, the ecosystem it inhabits is under sustained pressure, and the resilience of even Least Concern stream fishes depends on the maintenance of functioning riparian corridors and unpolluted headwaters across the Brazilian interior.
