Taxonomy & naming
Farlowella kirane was described by Dopazo, Deprá, Zawadzki and Britto in 2025, in Neotropical Ichthyology (volume 23, number 3, e240140). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) and FishBase both list it as a valid species. It is placed in the subfamily Loricariinae of the armoured-catfish family Loricariidae.
It is one of the short-snouted species of Farlowella, a genus otherwise known for its extreme rostral elongation, and at present it is recognised as the smallest known species in the genus.
Morphology
Farlowella kirane reaches a maximum recorded size of about 4 in standard length (SL), making it the smallest known species of the genus. It is described as a short-snouted species, distinguishing it from the many long-snouted Farlowella. As in all members of the genus, the body is elongate and twig-like, armoured with the longitudinal rows of bony plates characteristic of Loricariinae.

Habitat
Farlowella kirane is known from the upper Paraguai River basin in Brazil. It is a freshwater, demersal fish of tropical waters. As with other twig catfishes, it would be expected in clear, flowing water with submerged wood and vegetation to cling to, but no specific field water parameters (temperature, pH, conductivity) have been published for this species.
Feeding
Farlowella kirane has a low trophic level (estimated around 2.6), consistent with the genus's habit of grazing algae, biofilm and fine detritus from submerged surfaces. No diet study specific to this species has been published; the estimate follows from its trophic position rather than direct observation.
Mating
No courtship or mating behaviour has been published for Farlowella kirane. The species was only described in 2025 and its reproductive behaviour remains unstudied.
Breeding
No breeding account has been published for Farlowella kirane. Farlowella generally are egg-layers with paternal guarding of an adhesive egg clutch, but no spawning, clutch size or parental-care data exist for this species.
In the aquarium
There is no aquarium record for Farlowella kirane. As a species described only in 2025 and not known in the ornamental trade, no husbandry experience exists. Twig catfishes in general are delicate, requiring mature, clean, well-oxygenated water with gentle current and a steady supply of algae and biofilm, but this is genus-level guidance and not documented for F. kirane.
Conservation
Farlowella kirane has not been evaluated on the IUCN Red List, having been described only in 2025; it carries no conservation status at present, and it is not listed under CITES. As a small species with an apparently restricted range in the upper rio Paraguai, it may warrant assessment as more is learned about its distribution and the pressures on its habitat, but no formal evaluation has yet been published.
