Astyanax anai is a small characid tetra described in 2018 from the Sixaola and San San river basins straddling the Costa Rica–Panama border — one of the few Astyanax species endemic to lower Central America. Assessed as Endangered by the IUCN, it occupies an extent of occurrence of only 325 mi² and faces acute threats from the banana and cocoa plantation agriculture that dominates its catchment: pesticide runoff, sewage, and heavy-metal contamination have caused documented fish kills in the Sixaola basin. Within its limited range it typically co-occurs with the more abundant Astyanax nicaraguensis and is usually the less common of the two, making it a conservation priority among the region's freshwater fishes.

Taxonomy & naming

Astyanax anai was formally described by Angulo, Santos, López, Langeani & McMahan in 2018 in the Journal of Fish Biology (vol. 92, no. 6, pp. 1866–1887), in a paper that also provided a key to the lower Central American species of the genus. The type locality is the Sixaola River basin on the Caribbean slope of the Costa Rica–Panama border region. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) is the governing authority for the valid name; because the species was placed directly in Astyanax at its description, no parenthetical authority notation is used.

The genus Astyanax Baird & Girard, 1854 is one of the largest and most taxonomically complex genera in the family Characidae — a diverse assemblage of mostly small, silvery characins distributed from the southern United States to Argentina. Lower Central America has historically been underrepresented in the genus's taxonomy, and the 2018 description of A. anai was part of a broader effort to resolve the species composition there. It can be distinguished from its congener A. nicaraguensis, with which it co-occurs, by morphological characters detailed in the original description.

The specific epithet honours the Asociación ANAI, a Costa Rican non-governmental conservation organisation that has worked for decades to protect biodiversity in the Talamanca region, including the river systems this species inhabits. The genus name Astyanax derives from Greek mythology — Astyanax was the son of the Trojan hero Hector — a name applied loosely across the genus's immense range.

Morphology

Astyanax anai is a slender-bodied, laterally compressed characid reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 4.5 in (approximately 4.4 in), though most individuals in the field are smaller. Like the majority of Astyanax, it presents the characteristic body plan of the group: a relatively uniform, silver-sided tetra outline with a forked tail, a single dorsal fin, and a small adipose fin — the latter a shared feature of characids.

The species' distinguishing morphological characters relative to other lower Central American Astyanax are presented in the original description by Angulo et al. (2018), which provides mensural and meristic data from type and referred specimens. In general habitus it is a typical robust Astyanax, heavier-bodied than ornamental tetras from South America and adapted to a life in cool to warm stream currents rather than still-water conditions.

Habitat

Astyanax anai is restricted to the Sixaola and San San river basins on the Caribbean slope of southeastern Costa Rica and adjacent western Panama, at elevations of 3–328 ft above sea level. These are lowland to foothill drainages that descend from the Talamanca range to the Caribbean coast, draining a mosaic of secondary forest, indigenous territories, and intensive agricultural land.

The species uses streams and ponds, frequently taking shelter in pools and backwaters, among root masses, in caves, and in undercut banks — the kinds of refugia that buffer exposure to agricultural runoff and maintain cooler, oxygenated water. FishBase records a temperature range of 70–90 °F for the species, with extremes up to 97 °F reported in the Watsi River, indicating tolerance of warm, often sluggish lowland conditions. The IUCN calculates the extent of occurrence at only 325 mi², placing A. anai among the most geographically restricted Astyanax in Central America.

Feeding

Astyanax anai is an omnivore with a diet recorded as centred primarily on seeds and terrestrial and aquatic insects — a feeding strategy common among stream-dwelling characids in forest and agricultural catchments, where allochthonous material falling from riparian vegetation is a major food input. This places the species in an ecological role similar to that of many other Astyanax across its range: a generalist forager that can exploit whatever organic matter is available in the water column and at the surface.

In an aquarium setting A. anai would be expected to accept a broad range of prepared and live foods in keeping with its omnivorous diet: flake and small pellets, frozen invertebrates such as bloodworm and brine shrimp, and vegetable-based supplements. The emphasis on seeds in the wild diet suggests some appetite for plant-derived foods, which can be catered to with occasional spirulina-based food or blanched vegetable matter.

Mating

No published account of courtship behaviour specific to Astyanax anai exists in the available literature. As with most Astyanax, the species is expected to follow the typical characid reproductive strategy: egg-scattering open spawning with no parental care, adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs deposited among fine-leaved vegetation or submerged structure, and no lasting pair bond.

In larger Astyanax species, males typically pursue females actively and spawning occurs during brief, intense pairing runs close to or among vegetation. Spawning is likely to be associated with water temperature and condition cues; the species' stream environment would suggest some seasonal variation tied to rainfall and flow regimes in the Sixaola basin, though data specific to A. anai are absent.

Breeding

Astyanax anai has not been established in the ornamental trade and no captive-breeding accounts have been documented in the available sources. Based on the biology of the genus, it would be expected to spawn in the manner typical of Astyanax: egg-scattering over fine-leaved plants or substrate, with adhesive eggs requiring no care from adults. Incubation periods for Astyanax species under aquarium conditions typically range from 24 to 36 hours at tropical temperatures, with free-swimming fry appearing within a few days of hatching.

Given the species' Endangered status and extremely restricted wild range, captive propagation would represent a meaningful conservation action. However, as of the date of the original description it was uncommon in its native range and less abundant than co-occurring A. nicaraguensis, and it remains essentially unknown to specialist fishkeeping outside of its home region.

In the aquarium

Astyanax anai is not currently in general circulation in the ornamental trade, and hobbyist accounts are essentially absent. Its biology — a stream-dwelling, omnivorous, moderately sized characid adapted to warm lowland rivers — would make it a manageable aquarium subject in principle, suited to a spacious, well-filtered tank with good water movement and some open swimming space.

The temperature range documented from the wild (70–90 °F, with the lower end of that range reflecting cooler highland tributaries) overlaps well with standard tropical aquarium conditions. Being an active, likely schooling species, A. anai would benefit from groups of six or more individuals, with peaceful but robust tankmates that can keep pace in open water. Its primary value to conservation-minded aquarists would lie in supporting captive populations of a threatened lower Central American endemic, rather than for its ornamental appeal — though as an understudied species it may prove more interesting in behaviour and colour than the sparse literature currently suggests.

Conservation

Astyanax anai is assessed as Endangered (EN) under IUCN Red List criterion B1ab(iii,v), based on an assessment published in 2020 from a 13 September 2019 evaluation. The extent of occurrence is estimated at 325 mi², well below the EN threshold of 5,0 mi², and the species is known from only three to five locations. The IUCN notes that the extent of occurrence is very unlikely to exceed 5,0 mi² given the species' drainage-level restriction.

The primary threats are agricultural pollution from the banana and cocoa plantations that dominate the Sixaola and San San catchments. Pesticide runoff, sewage discharge, and heavy-metal contamination have been documented, and fish kills attributable to pesticide pollution have been recorded within the species' range. The population trend is assessed as decreasing. The Sixaola basin is also subject to ongoing deforestation and land conversion, reducing the riparian buffer that mitigates pollution inputs to the streams.

No specific management or recovery plan for A. anai was identified in the available sources at the time of assessment. Its overlap with indigenous and protected territories in the Talamanca corridor provides some de facto protection in parts of the range, but the scale of intensive agriculture in the lowland drainage makes catchment-wide water quality the dominant conservation challenge for this species.
