Astyanax angustifrons is a small, silvery characin of the Gulf-slope drainages of southern Mexico and northern Guatemala, inhabiting rivers, streams, and wetlands from the Candelaria and Grijalva-Usumacinta basin in Campeche and Tabasco southward into Petén. Long treated as a synonym of other Astyanax, it was resurrected as a valid species by Schmitter-Soto in a sweeping 2017 revision of the Central and North American members of the genus. It is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, with a stable, fairly wide-ranging population, though localized threats from invasive tilapia and oil contamination exist in parts of its range.

Taxonomy & naming

Astyanax angustifrons was originally described by Charles Tate Regan in 1908 as Tetragonopterus angustifrons in the Biologia Centrali-Americana, a monumental multi-volume survey of the natural history of Central America. The type locality is stated only as 'somewhere in Mexico' and has never been precisely fixed. For most of the twentieth century the taxon was treated as a synonym and effectively vanished from the literature.

In 2017, Juan Juan Schmitter-Soto published a comprehensive revision of Astyanax (Characiformes, Characidae) in Central and North America in the Journal of Natural History (51(23–24): 1331–1424), resurrecting A. angustifrons from synonymy and diagnosing it among nine newly described species from the region. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Astyanax angustifrons (Regan, 1908), with the parenthetical authority indicating that Regan placed it in a different genus at the time of description. Astyanax is the largest genus in the family Characidae and one of the most species-rich vertebrate genera in the Americas, making sound species limits within it a long-running taxonomic challenge.

Morphology

Astyanax angustifrons is a benthopelagic characin of typical Astyanax facies: a laterally compressed, moderately deep-bodied fish with large scales, a terminal mouth bearing small conical teeth, and a short adipose fin behind the dorsal. FishBase records a trophic level of 2.9, consistent with an omnivore feeding low on the food chain. The species has high resilience with a minimum population doubling time under 15 months.

Specific meristic data distinguishing A. angustifrons from its closest relatives are defined in Schmitter-Soto (2017); detailed counts are not replicated here. In life, as with most small Astyanax, the fish is silvery, often with a dark or metallic lateral stripe running to the tail, and lacks the bold markings of cave-dwelling congeners such as the Mexican tetra (A. mexicanus). Data on maximum standard length specific to this species remain sparse in the public literature; it falls within the range typical of small Astyanax from the region.

Habitat

Astyanax angustifrons inhabits inland freshwaters of the Gulf-slope lowlands of the Yucatán platform and the Petén basin: the Candelaria River drainage in Campeche, rivers and wetlands of Tabasco, and the river systems of El Petén in Guatemala. The IUCN assessment records its occurrence across inland wetlands including rivers, streams, lakes, and seasonal wetlands over sandy and muddy substrates, tolerating both sluggish and moderately swift current.

Notably, the species is recorded as tolerating salinity up to approximately 2.5 parts per thousand in the coastal petenes — anchialine limestone spring systems along the Yucatán coast — demonstrating a degree of euryhalinity uncommon in freshwater characins. The IUCN estimates an area of occupancy of 404–466 mi² and an extent of occurrence potentially reaching into the hundreds of thousands of square kilometres, reflecting the patchwork of suitable lowland wetland habitat across the region.

Feeding

Based on its trophic level of 2.9 (FishBase), Astyanax angustifrons feeds as a generalist omnivore, taking small invertebrates, plant material, and algae — the typical dietary profile for small, low-trophic Astyanax. Wild fish in lowland tropical drainages encounter a broad seasonal menu: invertebrate larvae in the substrate, surface insects, small crustaceans, fallen plant matter, and periphyton.

In the aquarium, small Astyanax are undemanding feeders. Quality flake and micro-pellets form the diet base, supplemented with frozen or live Daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworm for conditioning. Some vegetable matter — spirulina flake, blanched cucumber — is accepted and beneficial. As active midwater feeders they compete well at feeding time and are not prone to dietary problems if offered variety.

Mating

Astyanax angustifrons has not been specifically studied for mating behaviour, but all small Astyanax so far examined are egg-scattering open spawners. Males condition alongside females, pursuing and nudging receptive females toward fine-leaved vegetation or open water before initiating spawning. No pair bond forms and no territory is defended.

As with congeners, spawning most likely intensifies in the early morning hours and may be triggered by seasonal rainfall and temperature fluctuations that mimic the conditions of the natural wet season. Groups of fish likely spawn communally rather than in strict pairs, and multiple males may fertilise a single female's clutch.

Breeding

No captive breeding records specific to Astyanax angustifrons appear in the available literature, but the reproductive biology of small characins in Astyanax follows a consistent pattern: eggs are scattered among fine-leaved aquatic plants or substrate vegetation, are adhesive or semi-adhesive, and receive no parental care. Adults will predate eggs and fry readily, so breeders should separate spawning adults from the eggs.

Incubation in small tropical Astyanax typically runs 24–48 hours at temperatures in the 75–81 °F range, with fry becoming free-swimming within a few days and requiring tiny first foods — infusoria or commercial liquid fry foods — before graduating to newly hatched Artemia nauplii. Growth is relatively fast in the genus. These general principles should guide any first captive breeding attempts with this species.

In the aquarium

Astyanax angustifrons is not a commonly traded aquarium species; it appears occasionally in specialist collections of Central American live-bearers and characins, and in collections assembled by researchers working on Astyanax systematics. As with other small, robust Astyanax it should prove adaptable and hardy in a well-maintained community aquarium.

A shoal of six or more fish suits it best; like most characins it is more settled and displays better in a group than when kept singly or in pairs. Soft to moderately hard water at 72–82 °F, neutral to slightly alkaline pH, and good filtration reflect the species' lowland tropical origins. It can be kept alongside other similarly sized, peaceful community fish. The species' tolerance for mild brackishness — up to 2.5 ppt in the wild — suggests it may be adaptable to slightly mineralised water in captivity, though this has not been formally tested.

Conservation

Astyanax angustifrons is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment published by Juan Juan Schmitter-Soto in 2019 (assessed 08 October 2018). The population is considered stable, with no major decline detected, and the species occurs across a reasonably broad footprint of lowland wetland and river habitat in Mexico and Guatemala. The IUCN notes that the species occurs in protected areas across 21–30% of its range.

The primary recorded threats are localized: the introduction of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) as an invasive competitor and predator in parts of the range, and oil pollution associated with petroleum extraction in the Mexican portion of the Gulf-slope drainages. Neither threat is currently considered severe enough to drive the species toward a threatened category, but systematic population monitoring is lacking. The Petén basin wetlands and the Candelaria drainage face ongoing pressure from agricultural conversion and water extraction, which warrants continued attention for this and other endemic lowland fishes of the region.
