Astyanax altiparanae was described by Valdener Garutti and Heraldo A. Britski in 2000, named for the upper Paraná drainage it inhabits — the specific epithet altiparanae combines the Latin altus (upper, high) with Paraná, the major river system that defines the species' range. The species belongs to the genus Astyanax, the largest and most species-rich genus in the family Characidae, with representatives spread across Central and South America. FishBase places the species in the subfamily Acestrorhamphinae within the broader American tetra assemblage. Astyanax itself has long been a taxonomic tangle — a sprawling genus that likely harbours several distinct lineages — and the placement of many of its members is subject to ongoing revision. Astyanax altiparanae is a member of the bimaculatus species group, characterised by a humeral spot and a caudal peduncle spot. The common name 'lambari' is applied broadly in Brazil to several small characids, so the more specific 'yellowtail tetra' (or 'lambari-do-rabo-amarelo' in Portuguese) is preferred when precision matters.
Morphology
Astyanax altiparanae is a moderately deep-bodied, laterally compressed tetra reaching up to 6.5 in total length, though most individuals encountered in the wild and in hobbyist tanks are considerably smaller. The body is silvery, with the characteristic Astyanax patterning: a distinct humeral spot behind the opercle and a dark blotch at the base of the caudal peduncle, which often shows a yellowish or orange wash on the caudal fin — the feature that inspired the common name 'yellowtail tetra'. Habitat

It inhabits a wide variety of freshwater environments within this range, from small creeks and streams to large rivers and impoundments; it is benthopelagic and occupies both near-shore and open-water zones.
Astyanax altiparanae shows considerable tolerance for modified habitats, including water storage reservoirs and degraded stream reaches, which partly explains its abundance and stable conservation status. Astyanax altiparanae is an egg-scattering species that spawns in open water or among fine-leaved plants with no pair bond formation and no parental investment beyond the spawn itself. Reproductive males display the species' bony anal-fin hooks, which likely function mechanically during spawning to stabilise the pair as eggs and sperm are released simultaneously.
Research on the species' reproductive biology has shown that spawning is responsive to photoperiod and temperature cues, and out-of-season reproduction can be induced by controlled manipulation of these environmental parameters in laboratory conditions. Astyanax altiparanae is a lively, mid-sized tetra suited to community aquaria with fish of comparable size and temperament. It is best kept in groups of six or more, which distributes any fin-nipping tendency and produces the shoaling behaviour that shows the fish to best advantage. A tank of at least 31.5–39.5 in in length gives a school the open swimming space it needs; the species is an active, continuous swimmer and does not do well in cramped conditions.
Water conditions should reflect the warm Paraná basin habitat: temperatures in the range of approximately 72–82 °F, a pH near neutral, and moderate water hardness. The species is tolerant and forgiving of some variation, which adds to its suitability for home aquaria. Feeding is straightforward — it accepts virtually any standard aquarium food — and it adjusts quickly to new environments. Suitable tankmates include other mid-sized South American characids, peaceful cichlids, and catfish. The male's bony anal-fin hooks are harmless to tankmates but worth noting for anyone planning to net or handle adults, as the hooks can catch in fine mesh.

Astyanax altiparanae is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the evaluation published in 2022 based on an assessment conducted on 7 November 2018 by Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio). The assessment found the species to be widely distributed, frequent, and abundant throughout the upper Paraná basin, with a stable population trend and no significant threats identified.
The species' occurrence within more than thirteen Brazilian protected conservation units further reinforces the security of the population. Its tolerance for modified habitats — including reservoirs and degraded waterways — means it is not among the characids at elevated risk from habitat alteration, unlike more stenotopic relatives confined to specific stream types or restricted drainage basins. For aquarists, this means that Astyanax altiparanae is available without conservation concern, though hobbyist interest remains modest relative to the species' biological significance as a research model.
