Taxonomy & naming
Astyanax apiaka was described in 2023 by Ferreira, Lima, Ribeiro, Flausino Junior, Machado and Mirande in the Canadian Journal of Zoology (DOI: 10.1139/cjz-2022-0153). The type locality is the rio Apiacás, a tributary of the rio Teles Pires in the larger rio Tapajós drainage, Mato Grosso state, Brazil. The holotype (CPUFMT 7654, 6 in SL) was deposited at CPUFMT, the fish collection of the Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso.
The species belongs to Astyanax — one of the most species-rich genera in all of freshwater ichthyology — within the family Characidae. Astyanax is a pantropical New World group spanning an enormous geographic and ecological range, and the description of apiaka reflects an ongoing wave of new species discoveries in Amazonian tributaries as sampling coverage improves. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes governs the valid name; because it was placed in Astyanax at description, the authority is not parenthetical.
The diagnosis separates A. apiaka from congeners by a combination of an oval-shaped humeral blotch and dentary and premaxillary teeth whose main cusp is distinctly longer than the remaining cusps — useful characters within an otherwise morphologically conservative genus. Meristics include 9 dorsal soft rays, 24–29 anal soft rays, and 36 vertebrae.
Morphology
Astyanax apiaka is a moderately sized tetra, with a maximum recorded standard length of 6.5 in. Like other members of the genus it is a laterally compressed, fusiform fish with a relatively deep body, a forked caudal fin, and the characteristic adipose fin of the Characiformes.
The most diagnostic external feature is the oval-shaped humeral blotch — a dark marking on the shoulder behind the head — a character that appears in other Astyanax but takes a distinctively oval form in this species. The dentition is equally important: the main cusp of the teeth on both the dentary and premaxilla is noticeably elongated relative to the subsidiary cusps, distinguishing A. apiaka from the majority of its congeners that share similar body form and pigmentation. Detailed colour description from field material is not yet widely available given the species' recent description, but the overall impression is that of a silvery-bodied characid with the humeral spot as its clearest field mark.
Habitat
Astyanax apiaka is known only from the upper rio Apiacás in the Tapajós basin of Mato Grosso, Brazil. A critical biogeographic feature of its range is a waterfall of more than 20 metres on the lower Apiacás, which effectively cuts the upper drainage off from the broader river network and restricts gene flow with downstream populations. The fish collected during the 2006–2007 surveys that underpinned the species description were found in fast-flowing river stretches, suggesting a rheophilic tendency consistent with many Astyanax from hilly Amazonian tributaries.
The Tapajós basin drains the central Brazilian shield into the Amazon, and the Teles Pires sub-basin in particular is a region of considerable ichthyological diversity. Because A. apiaka appears confined to the upper Apiacás above the waterfall barrier, its effective range is small — an ecological island in a hydrological sense — even within a large river system.
Feeding
IUCN assessment records document fish and insect remains in the diet of Astyanax apiaka, consistent with the omnivorous and opportunistic feeding strategy characteristic of the genus. Astyanax species generally exploit a broad dietary range tied to local prey availability: aquatic and terrestrial insects, small fish, plant material, and detritus all appear in stomach content analyses across the genus.
In the aquarium, close relatives of similar size accept quality dried foods readily, alongside live and frozen invertebrates such as Daphnia, bloodworm, and brine shrimp. A varied diet that includes some protein items is advisable for maintaining condition. Like most open-water characids it feeds actively in the mid-water column and is unlikely to be a fussy eater once settled.
Mating
No specific mating observations have been published for Astyanax apiaka, reflecting the recency of its description and the difficulty of working in fast-flowing Tapajós tributaries. Reproductive biology in Astyanax follows a broadly consistent pattern across the genus: males and females aggregate and engage in short chasing and parallel-swimming sequences, often at dawn or triggered by seasonal water changes, before scattering eggs over submerged vegetation or substrate.
Sexual dimorphism in Astyanax is generally subtle — females tend to be deeper-bodied when gravid — and there are no recorded courtship structures such as nuptial tubercles or elaborate fin displays in congeners of similar size. It is reasonable to infer that A. apiaka follows this egg-scattering, non-guarding pattern, but direct observation has not been reported.
Breeding
No captive breeding record for Astyanax apiaka has been published. The species has not reached the aquarium trade in meaningful numbers, and the limited wild collecting that established the type material was conducted for scientific purposes rather than ornamental supply.
By analogy with well-studied Astyanax — which are among the most thoroughly researched vertebrates in developmental and evolutionary biology — breeding likely follows the standard characid model: egg-scattering over fine-leaved plants or gravel with no parental care, adhesive eggs that hatch within a few days at tropical temperatures, and fry that require small live foods initially. Should the species enter aquarium culture, conditioning with varied live and frozen foods and a slight temperature drop or water change would be the logical first step to trigger spawning, as these cues reliably work in congeners.
In the aquarium
Astyanax apiaka does not appear to be established in the ornamental fish trade, and aquarium data for the species specifically are absent. The species' relatively large maximum size (6.5 in SL) places it in the category of larger characids rather than the small tetras familiar in the hobby, and fast-flowing water origins suggest it would appreciate good oxygenation and moderate current in captivity.
Enthusiasts working with Astyanax of comparable size generally provide spacious tanks of at least 59 in in length, neutral to slightly acidic soft water reflecting Amazonian conditions, efficient filtration with surface agitation, and groups of six or more to allow schooling behaviour. Diet should be varied. Given the species' restricted range and Data Deficient status, responsible acquisition of any specimens — were they to become available — would require certainty that they originate from captive-bred rather than wild-caught stock.
Conservation
Astyanax apiaka is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment published in 2025 covering work completed in May 2024. The assessor (F. Lima) notes that the species was relatively common at its type locality when collected in 2006–2007, but population trends are unknown and the restricted range above a major waterfall means the effective population occupies a small, isolated area.
Three hydroelectric dams have been constructed in the upper rio Apiacás since the species was first collected. The effects of those dams on the fast-flowing stretches that A. apiaka inhabits are unknown, but impoundment typically converts lotic to lentic habitat, warms and deoxygenates water, and blocks fish movement — all pressures that could be severe for a rheophilic species confined above a natural waterfall barrier. The IUCN assessment also flags invasive species as a potential threat. The Data Deficient listing reflects genuine uncertainty rather than an implied low risk: the combination of a small range, recent description, and major infrastructure development in the watershed warrants continued monitoring, and a future reassessment with better population data could shift the status in either direction.
