Astyanax aramburui is a small characid endemic to the Paraná and Uruguay river basins of Argentina, reaching around 2.5 in standard length. Described in 2006, it belongs to the large and taxonomically complex genus Astyanax — the most species-rich genus in South American freshwaters — and is distinguished from its closest relatives by a combination of a round to trapezoidal black humeral spot dorsal to the lateral line, a relatively slender body, large eye, and a distinctive single pentacuspid maxillary tooth. The IUCN assesses it as Near Threatened, with restricted range and habitat degradation among the pressures it faces.

Taxonomy & naming

Astyanax aramburui was described by Protogino, Miquelarena & López in 2006, based on material from the Paraná and Uruguay river basins of Argentina. The species belongs to the genus Astyanax Baird & Girard, 1854, a sprawling assemblage of small characids distributed from the southern United States to Patagonia and one of the most species-rich vertebrate genera in the Neotropics. Placing new members of Astyanax in a meaningful phylogenetic context remains an ongoing challenge in Neotropical ichthyology, and the internal classification of the genus continues to be revised.

The valid name as recognised in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) is Astyanax aramburui Protogino, Miquelarena & López, 2006, with authority not parenthesised as the species has not been moved from Astyanax since its original description. The specific epithet honours a person (the eponymous Aramburu), following the tradition common in Neotropical ichthyology of naming new species after collectors or colleagues who contributed specimens or institutional support.

Morphology

Astyanax aramburui is a slender-bodied small characid reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 2.5 in. It has the typical Astyanax body plan: laterally compressed, fusiform, with a moderately pointed snout and a terminal mouth bearing multiple rows of cusped teeth. Key diagnostic characters include a round to trapezoidal black humeral spot situated dorsal to the lateral line, a relatively slender body (body depth 31.8–37.4% of standard length), a large eye (orbital diameter 41.1–45.8% of head length), and a short snout (15.5–20.9% of head length). The lateral line is complete, with 38–42 pored scales.

The anal fin carries v–vi unbranched plus 23–29 branched rays. A single pentacuspid maxillary tooth is a notable character used in its original diagnosis, distinguishing it from related species with different maxillary dentition. Breeding males develop bony hooks on the anal and other fins, along with breeding tubercles on the head and body scales — secondary sexual characters widespread in Astyanax and many other characids.

Habitat

The species is endemic to Argentina, occurring within the Paraná and Uruguay river basins — drainages that together form part of the vast La Plata system draining southeastern South America. Within these basins it has been collected from creeks with sections approximately 164 ft in width, with pools exceeding 7 ft in depth. The substrate is mud and clay, and the water's edge and shallower sections support a growth of grasses and aquatic plants. This habitat type — vegetated lowland creeks and pools within subtropical river systems — is characteristic of many small Astyanax.

The subtropical freshwater environment of the Paraná-Uruguay corridor experiences seasonal temperature swings, with summer highs well into the upper 20s Celsius and cooler winter conditions. FishBase records the species as pelagic at depths beyond 7 ft in the deeper pool sections, suggesting it uses the open water column of larger pools as well as the vegetated margins.

Feeding

FishBase assigns Astyanax aramburui a trophic level of 3.0 ± 0.4, placing it near the base of the consumer trophic ladder — consistent with an omnivorous diet of invertebrates and plant matter, as is typical for the genus. Small Astyanax species are generalist feeders that exploit whatever invertebrate and vegetable resources are seasonally available: aquatic insects and their larvae, small crustaceans, terrestrial insects that fall onto the water surface, algae, and detritus.

In captivity, fish of this size and trophic position adapt readily to a mixed diet of good-quality dried foods supplemented with small live or frozen invertebrates such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, and Cyclops. Regular provision of small live or frozen items encourages natural feeding behaviour and supports condition in breeding groups.

Mating

Like virtually all Astyanax, A. aramburui is an egg-scattering open spawner with no parental care. In breeding condition, males develop bony hooks on the anal fin — a character documented for this species in its original description — and breeding tubercles on the head and scales, physical changes associated with spawning activity and male competition. Courtship behaviour in small Astyanax typically involves active pursuit of females through the water column and vegetation.

Spawning takes place among fine-leaved aquatic plants or submerged grasses, where eggs are released and fertilised in open water before falling or adhering loosely to the substrate and vegetation. The adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs receive no further attention from either parent. In species with comparable ecology, spawning is often triggered by seasonal temperature rises, changes in water level, or rainfall — natural cues in the subtropical river systems where these fish live.

Breeding

No captive-breeding accounts specific to Astyanax aramburui are documented in the available literature, but its reproductive biology conforms to the well-established pattern of the genus. Eggs are small, numerous, and broadcast among vegetation or over the substrate; they receive no parental care and are actively eaten by the adults if left in the same water. Incubation at subtropical temperatures is typically brief — on the order of a day or two — and fry are free-swimming within a few days of hatching.

Breeding groups should be conditioned separately on a varied diet of live and frozen foods before being introduced to a spawning tank furnished with fine-leaved plants or spawning mops. Removing the adults promptly after spawning is essential to preserve the eggs. Fry are small at hatching and require very fine first foods — infusoria or commercial fry preparations — before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp. The species has high resilience with a minimum population doubling time under 15 months, reflecting the fast generation time characteristic of small Astyanax.

In the aquarium

Astyanax aramburui is not an established aquarium species and is rarely if ever encountered in the ornamental trade under its own name. Its ecological profile — a small, slender, schooling characid from subtropical South American river systems — is consistent with a sociable, active fish that would do best in a group of six or more in a well-planted aquarium with open swimming space. Water conditions reflecting its subtropical origins, including seasonal temperature variation down to the low 20s or even cooler, would suit it better than constant tropical temperatures.

For aquarists who encounter this species through specialist importers or field-collecting trips, standard Astyanax husbandry applies: a peaceful community tank with similarly sized, active tankmates, plenty of swimming room, and a varied diet. Its small size (maximum around 2.5 in SL) makes it manageable in a moderately sized aquarium. The bony fin hooks that breeding males develop are a minor hazard when netting or handling fish, as they can catch in net mesh.

Conservation

Astyanax aramburui is assessed as Near Threatened (NT) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated 05 September 2020. The listing criteria recorded are B1a+2a, referring to a restricted extent of occurrence and area of occupancy combined with a continuing decline in the number of locations where the species is known. Although the Paraná and Uruguay basins are large river systems overall, the species' actual known distribution within them is limited, and lowland creek habitats in the subtropical Pampas region face ongoing pressure from agriculture, water extraction, and pollution.

The Near Threatened category signals that the species is approaching the thresholds for a threatened designation but does not currently meet them. Continued monitoring of population trends and habitat quality in the Paraná-Uruguay corridor is needed to detect any deterioration that would move it into a threatened category. As an Argentine endemic with a restricted known range, it is potentially vulnerable to any large-scale changes in land use or hydrology within its native basins.
