Astyanax argentatus was described by Spencer F. Baird and Charles Girard in 1854 from specimens collected in the upper tributaries of the Río Nueces, Texas, USA. The type material was among the early fish collections made by U.S. boundary surveys working the southwestern frontier, and the species is one of several small characins named by Baird and Girard from that era. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Catalog of Fishes, CAS) treats Astyanax argentatus Baird & Girard, 1854 as the valid name; the authority is unparenthesised because the species was described in and has remained in Astyanax.
Astyanax is the largest genus in Characidae and one of the most speciose vertebrate genera in the Western Hemisphere, ranging from the southern United States to Patagonia. The genus is notorious among systematists for its taxonomic complexity — boundaries between species are often blurred, and the group has been subject to repeated revision. A. argentatus holds a special position within it: described from Nearctic territory and long regarded as the northernmost representative of an otherwise overwhelmingly Neotropical clade.
The specific epithet argentatus is Latin for 'silvered' or 'made of silver,' a reference to the fish's reflective flanks — one of several species in Characidae named for the same quality. The common name Texan tetra is used in aquarium trade contexts, underscoring both the geography and its belonging to the tetra group in a broad, informal sense.
Morphology
Astyanax argentatus is a slender, laterally compressed characin. The original description reports the largest examined specimens at 4.5 in standard length (about 4.5 in), and body depth is roughly 30–37% of standard length, giving the fish a fairly elongate profile compared with deep-bodied Astyanax relatives.
The body is silvery overall, with the flanks reflective and the dorsum somewhat darker. Like most Astyanax, it carries the family's hallmark adipose fin behind the dorsal, a small fleshy structure without rays. The caudal fin is forked. No strongly contrasting lateral stripe or bold markings distinguish it from close relatives, and correct identification relies more on meristic characters and locality than on colour pattern alone.
Sexual dimorphism in Astyanax is generally subtle at rest, though females of egg-bearing species are often noticeably deeper-bellied when ripe. Full details for A. argentatus specifically are not captured in available sources, and claims about dimorphism beyond body depth should be treated cautiously.
Habitat
Astyanax argentatus is a freshwater species native to the drainage systems of southern Texas, USA, and extending into adjacent northern Mexico. The type locality is the upper tributaries of the Río Nueces in Texas. FishBase characterises it as benthopelagic, occupying the mid-water and lower water column in freshwater rivers and streams.
The Río Nueces system drains semi-arid limestone country in the Texas Hill Country and South Texas Plains. Waters in this region tend toward moderate hardness and near-neutral to mildly alkaline conditions in nature, though the aquarium care literature suggests A. argentatus adapts well to the softer, more acid parameters common in the hobby. The region experiences seasonal variation in temperature and flow, and the fish presumably tolerates a considerable temperature range across the year.
As the only native North American representative of Characidae, A. argentatus occupies an ecologically unusual position — a tropical-family fish persisting at the thermal margin of the family's range, in a drainage system that connects historically with the Rio Grande basin.
Feeding
Astyanax species are broadly omnivorous opportunists, and A. argentatus is expected to follow the same pattern: small invertebrates, insect larvae, plant material, and whatever small edible items are available in the water column and at the surface. The genus feeds at multiple levels and is known to adapt its diet to local prey availability.
In the aquarium, Texan tetras accept standard fare: quality flake and small granules as a staple, supplemented with live or frozen foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworm to maintain condition and colour. Like most small characins, they benefit from a varied diet rather than a single food type. They are active foragers and should be fed at least once daily; multiple small feedings suit their metabolism better than a single large meal.
Mating
Astyanax argentatus, in line with the broader genus, is an egg-scattering spawner with no parental care. Males court females with active pursuit and lateral displays. Spawning drives are triggered by suitable conditions — a slight temperature rise, frequent water changes, or the presence of fine-leaved vegetation and spawning mops that mimic natural plant cover.
In the wild, spawning is likely seasonal or associated with rainfall-driven changes in water chemistry and flow. In captivity, conditioned pairs or groups can be induced to spawn by replicating these cues: a water change with slightly cooler, softer water, combined with plant cover or a spawning mop, typically triggers activity. Males pursue females energetically at spawning time, and the pair scatters small adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or over the substrate.
Breeding
Breeding follows the standard Astyanax pattern. Eggs are scattered among plants or a synthetic spawning mop and are small and semi-adhesive. Adults do not guard the spawn and will eat eggs and fry if not separated; breeders typically remove the adults or transfer the spawning medium to a rearing vessel immediately after spawning is observed.
At typical tropical aquarium temperatures in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius, eggs hatch within a few days. The fry are initially very small and require fine first foods — infusoria or commercial liquid fry foods — before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii as they grow. Water quality during rearing is critical; small, frequent water changes reduce ammonia accumulation in the rearing tank. Growth is moderate, and juveniles begin to show adult shape within a few weeks.
In the aquarium
Astyanax argentatus is reported to be a timid species in captivity, and it fares best with subdued lighting, ample plant cover or other shelter, and calm tankmates of similar or smaller size. Like most tetras, it is a schooling fish and should be kept in groups of at least six; solitary specimens or small groups become stressed and hide. A school of ten or more produces the most natural behaviour.
Aquarium sources suggest water parameters of 73–79 °F, pH 4.0–6.5, and very soft water (0–5 dH), which is markedly different from the harder, near-neutral conditions of its native Texas limestone drainages. This suggests captive stock may have been selected or acclimatised toward softer water over generations, or that individual populations span a broader chemical tolerance than the type locality implies. Either set of parameters can work; stability matters more than hitting exact numbers. The tank should be well-filtered but with modest surface agitation, given the fish's preference for calmer conditions. A dark substrate and background help bring out the silver flanks and reduce stress. The species is peaceful and suited to community setups with other small, non-aggressive fish.
Conservation
Astyanax argentatus has not received a formal dedicated IUCN Red List assessment at the time of writing; FishBase references a Least Concern classification from around 2018–2019, but the species-specific IUCN assessment page was not locatable. As a species with a restricted U.S. range — present in Texas and northern Mexico — it falls within the purview of North American freshwater conservation monitoring, though it has received less attention than wholly endemic Texas species.
The Río Nueces and associated drainages face the pressures typical of semi-arid river systems in the American Southwest: water extraction for agriculture and municipalities, channelisation, introduced species, and periodic drought intensified by climate variability. Whether any of these pressures have materially reduced A. argentatus populations is not clearly documented in available sources.
The fact that A. argentatus is commercially available through the aquarium trade and that any captive stock exists provides a measure of insurance, though it does not substitute for monitoring of wild populations. Aquarists keeping the species are encouraged to source captive-bred individuals where possible and to note that, as the sole native North American characin, it holds scientific and biogeographic significance beyond its modest appearance.
