Taxonomy & naming
Astyanax atratoensis was described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1907 based on material collected from the Atrato River system in the Chocó region of northwestern Colombia. The specific epithet atratoensis refers directly to the Atrato River, the type locality. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid name as Astyanax atratoensis Eigenmann, 1907, with Eigenmann as the authority in the unpunctuated form standard for the Catalog.
The genus Astyanax belongs to the family Characidae and is among the most species-rich genera of freshwater fishes in the Western Hemisphere, with well over 100 described species distributed from Mexico south through most of South America. Systematics within the genus remain in flux, and some authorities have historically split or synonymised various forms; A. atratoensis is treated as a valid species under current usage. Its placement within the Atrato drainage — an isolated Pacific-slope system that flows north into the Caribbean — gives it some biogeographic distinctiveness within the Colombian ichthyofauna.
Morphology
Astyanax atratoensis is a small, laterally compressed characin of typical Astyanax build, reaching approximately 1.5–2 in standard length. Like other members of the genus it presents a fusiform to moderately deep body, a terminal mouth armed with small teeth, and the adipose fin characteristic of most characins. The overall body coloration is presumed to follow the generic pattern of silver to silver-grey flanks with a dark lateral stripe or caudal spot, though detailed colour descriptions are not extensively documented for this species.
Data on meristics — fin-ray and scale counts — specific to A. atratoensis are sparse in the available literature, and the species has not been the subject of a detailed morphological redescription in recent decades. Workers treating the Atrato ichthyofauna have confirmed it as a member of the regional characin fauna, but published morphological data remain limited to the original description and subsequent checklists.
Habitat
Astyanax atratoensis is known from the Atrato River drainage of the Chocó department in northwestern Colombia, a lowland river system draining one of the wettest regions on Earth. The Chocó biogeographic region receives some of the highest rainfall totals in South America, and the Atrato and its tributaries flow through dense tropical rainforest lowlands before reaching the Gulf of Urabá and the Caribbean Sea.
Detailed habitat data for this species are not extensively published, but the river systems of the Chocó are characterised by warm, soft, and moderately to highly acidic waters typical of heavily forested tropical lowlands, where leaf litter and decaying vegetation dominate the chemical signature of the water. Astyanax species across their range generally occupy a broad range of microhabitats within river systems, including shallow margins, flooded forest edges, and stream riffles, and A. atratoensis is assumed to occupy similar environments within its range.
Feeding
Astyanax atratoensis has not been the subject of a dedicated dietary study, but the feeding biology of the genus is well characterised. Astyanax species are generalist omnivores that exploit whatever food resources are seasonally and locally available: small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates, insect larvae, algae, plant material, and small amounts of detritus are all recorded across the genus. The Chocó lowland rivers offer abundant allochthonous inputs from the surrounding forest, and riparian and forest-floor invertebrates likely form a significant component of the diet.
In an aquarium setting, congeners with similar ecology accept a broad range of prepared and live foods readily. High-quality flake, small pellets, and frozen or live foods such as Daphnia and brine shrimp are appropriate; a varied diet prevents nutritional deficiencies and supports normal colouration. The species is not known to have specialised dietary requirements.
Mating
No specific mating observations have been published for Astyanax atratoensis, but the reproductive biology of the genus is consistent across many studied species. Astyanax are egg-scattering, open-water or plant-associated spawners with no parental care. Males typically outnumber females in spawning aggregations and pursue ripe females actively, with spawning triggered by environmental cues such as temperature, rainfall, and photoperiod.
In the wild, spawning often coincides with seasonal flooding events in tropical river systems, which expand the available habitat and food supply for larvae. Fertilisation is external, and both sexes scatter eggs freely among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or over open substrate, after which the adults take no further interest in the spawn.
Breeding
Astyanax atratoensis has not been reported in captive breeding in the hobbyist literature, and no aquarium breeding accounts are available. Based on the consistent pattern across the genus, breeding would be expected to follow the typical Astyanax model: a conditioning period on varied live and frozen foods, a soft-water, slightly acidic breeding tank in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius, and spawning over fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop.
Eggs in the genus are small, adhesive, and numerous; they typically hatch within 24–48 hours at tropical temperatures, and the fry become free-swimming after a further day or two once the yolk sac is absorbed. Adults eat eggs and offer no parental care, so separation of the adults immediately after spawning is standard practice. Fry require very fine first foods — infusoria, rotifers, or commercial liquid fry food — before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp.
In the aquarium
Astyanax atratoensis is not established in the ornamental trade, and aquarium-keeping information specific to the species is essentially absent from the hobby literature. As a small, plainly coloured Astyanax from a neotropical lowland river it would be expected to be an undemanding, adaptable fish in the manner of the many Astyanax species that are kept, with water in the soft, warm, slightly acidic range appropriate to the Chocó region. A temperature range of approximately 75–82 °F (75–82 °F), soft to moderately hard water, and a pH tending slightly acidic to neutral are reasonable starting parameters.
Should the species become available to aquarists, a well-planted community aquarium with peaceful tankmates of similar size would suit its presumed ecology. Like other small characins it would be expected to school and to benefit from being kept in groups of six or more. The absence of hobby records means that all care guidance for A. atratoensis is by analogy with congeners rather than direct experience.
Conservation
Astyanax atratoensis has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List; no formal conservation assessment is available for the species. The Atrato River drainage lies within the Colombian Chocó, a region of extraordinary biological diversity and endemism recognised as a global biodiversity hotspot. While the Chocó's extreme rainfall and relative inaccessibility have historically limited development pressure, the region faces ongoing threats from deforestation, artisanal and illegal gold mining, and agricultural expansion, all of which affect water quality and stream habitat in the lowland river systems.
The genus Astyanax as a whole is generally considered resilient and adaptable, and many species thrive in disturbed and degraded habitats. Whether A. atratoensis shares this resilience, or has a more restricted range and habitat specificity that would make it vulnerable, is unknown without current field survey data. In the absence of an IUCN assessment, the conservation status of this species must be regarded as unknown.
