Astyanax bacalarensis is a small freshwater characid described by Juan Jacobo Schmitter-Soto in 2017, native to the karst waters of southeastern Mexico and adjacent Central America — from Quintana Roo south to the Sittee River in Belize and west to the Mopán drainage in Guatemala. Its type locality, the storied Lake Bacalar on Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, is a shallow, multi-layered lake of exceptional clarity whose waters are shaped by the region's porous limestone substrate. Assessed by the IUCN as Least Concern in 2018, the species occupies warm, tropical freshwaters across a range that straddles the borders of three countries and represents one of the most recently described members of the speciose genus Astyanax in the Mesoamerican region.

Taxonomy & naming

Astyanax bacalarensis was described by Juan Jacobo Schmitter-Soto in 2017. The species belongs to Astyanax, one of the largest and most taxonomically complex genera in the family Characidae, with well over a hundred valid species distributed from the southwestern United States through Mexico and Central America into South America. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the authority for valid names in Characidae; the species is recorded there as Astyanax bacalarensis Schmitter-Soto, 2017, with the authority unparenthesised because the species was originally described within Astyanax and has not been transferred to another genus.

FishBase places the species in the family Acestrorhamphidae (American tetras) under the subfamily Acestrorhamphinae, reflecting the ongoing and contested rearrangement of higher-level characid classification. For the purposes of this account the family is treated as Characidae in accordance with long-standing usage and the Catalog of Fishes. The species is distinguished from its Yucatán Peninsula congeners by a suite of morphometric and meristic characters: the origin of the anal fin does not overlap the last dorsal ray, head length falls at or below 28% of standard length, mean predorsal length is approximately 50.4% of standard length, and the humeral spot is rectangular-triangular to oval in shape.

Morphology

Astyanax bacalarensis reaches a maximum recorded standard length of approximately 3.5 in, making it a mid-sized member of the genus and within the range typical of Mesoamerican Astyanax. The body plan follows the general Astyanax template: moderately deep and laterally compressed, with a single dorsal fin, a small adipose fin posterior to the dorsal, a forked caudal fin, and the paired jaws bearing the small, multicuspid teeth characteristic of the genus.

Meristic counts that help diagnose the species include dorsal soft rays numbering 9 to 11, anal soft rays ranging from 21 to 27, and a vertebral count of 32 to 33. The humeral spot — a pigment blotch on the shoulder region behind the operculum — is present and described as rectangular-triangular to oval, which differs in shape from the humeral markings of closely related Yucatán congeners. Detailed colour-pattern descriptions in life have not been extensively reported in the accessible literature, but the species shares the generally silvery, laterally compressed appearance common to the genus.

Habitat

The species is native to freshwater bodies across a Mesoamerican range spanning Quintana Roo in southeastern Mexico, south to the Sittee River system of Belize, and west to the Mopán drainage of Guatemala. Its type locality is Lake Bacalar, a shallow, elongate karst lake in Quintana Roo renowned for its stratified water column and unusually clear, turquoise waters maintained by constant input from underground springs filtering through the Yucatán's limestone substrate.

FishBase characterises the species as benthopelagic — occupying the lower water column or vicinity of the substrate rather than strictly pelagic open water — in tropical freshwater environments. The karst geology of the Yucatán Peninsula produces calcium-rich, relatively hard and neutral-to-alkaline waters with high clarity and low organic loading in many lake environments, conditions distinct from the soft, acidic blackwaters of the Amazonian basin. Across its broader range the species inhabits rivers and lakes shaped by similar lowland tropical and karst influences.

Feeding

No dedicated dietary study of Astyanax bacalarensis appears in the sources available for this account. Members of the genus Astyanax broadly are regarded as opportunistic omnivores with ontogenetic shifts in diet: juveniles tend to consume microinvertebrates and zooplankton, while adults incorporate a wider array of food items including larger invertebrates, plant material, and detritus. The species is noted in contextual literature as likely showing such ontogenetic feeding shifts typical of its congeners.

In the clear, spring-fed karst lakes of its native range, prey availability differs from turbid or blackwater environments: aquatic invertebrates associated with structured submerged vegetation, biofilm on hard substrates, and surface-fallen terrestrial insects are all probable prey items. Until stomach-content or stable-isotope studies specific to A. bacalarensis are conducted, diet must be inferred from well-studied congeners rather than direct observation.

Mating

Specific mating behaviour for Astyanax bacalarensis has not been documented in the published literature accessible to this account. The genus Astyanax belongs to Characiformes, an order in which the ancestral and overwhelmingly predominant reproductive strategy is egg-scattering open spawning with no parental care. Males of most Astyanax pursue females through the water column or vegetation during spawning events, releasing sperm as the female broadcasts adhesive or slightly adhesive eggs.

In tropical and subtropical Mesoamerican freshwaters, seasonal cues such as changes in water temperature, photoperiod, and water level associated with the onset of rainy season typically drive spawning activity in characids. Submerged vegetation, fine-leaved aquatic plants, and root masses along shorelines are the most commonly used substrates for egg deposition in closely related species, and the same is assumed for A. bacalarensis until direct observation provides otherwise.

Breeding

Astyanax bacalarensis is not known to be established in the aquarium hobby and no captive breeding accounts are available. Based on the biology of the genus, breeding in captivity would follow the pattern typical of Astyanax: egg-scattering over fine-leaved plants or synthetic spawning mops, with the adhesive eggs deposited in small batches and the adults offering no subsequent care. Eggs and adults should be separated promptly after spawning to prevent egg predation.

Conditioned adults of most Astyanax respond to water changes that lower temperature slightly and raise water level, mimicking the onset of the rainy season. For a species from relatively hard, clear karst waters, conditioning water with moderate hardness and near-neutral pH rather than the soft-acid conditions used for Amazonian tetras would be the appropriate baseline. Fry would be expected to be small at hatching and require fine first foods — infusoria or commercial liquid fry diets — before advancing to newly hatched brine shrimp. These remain inferences from the genus rather than documented observations of A. bacalarensis.

In the aquarium

Astyanax bacalarensis is not known to appear in the aquarium trade. No hobbyist husbandry literature is available for the species, and it has not been kept or bred in captivity in any documented account. Its morphology and ecology place it squarely in the mainstream of the genus: a mid-sized, active, schooling characid from clear to moderately turbid tropical freshwater, which in a hypothetical aquarium context would require a spacious tank with open swimming space, a school of six or more conspecifics, and water conditions reflecting its karst origins — temperatures in the tropical range (roughly 73–82 °F), moderate hardness, and neutral to slightly alkaline pH.

The species' potential ecological impacts documented in the conservation literature — where individuals translocated to non-native Mexican lakes have been reported to affect native Cyprinodon pupfishes — suggest it may be a competitive and adaptable fish within freshwater communities. Any aquarist who encounters this species would be working without an established knowledge base and should treat it as a species requiring cautious, well-researched husbandry.

Conservation

Astyanax bacalarensis was assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with an assessment date of 09 September 2018 and the result published in 2019 (IUCN.UK.2019-2.RLTS.T132569524A132572607.en). The Least Concern listing reflects a species with a range spanning three countries and no identified threat of sufficient magnitude to qualify it for a threatened category under IUCN criteria at the time of assessment.

Despite its currently stable status, the species warrants attention on two fronts. Its type locality, Lake Bacalar, is a high-value karst lake under pressure from tourism development, agriculture, and water extraction in the Quintana Roo region. Water quality degradation in Lake Bacalar — including algal blooms driven by nutrient runoff — has been documented in recent years and could affect native fish communities. Separately, records exist of Astyanax bacalarensis individuals being transplanted to non-native lakes in Mexico, where they have been reported to exert competitive pressure on native Cyprinodon species, underscoring the importance of not moving this or any freshwater fish beyond its native drainage.
