Astyanax bagual is a small, deep-bodied characid from the highland rivers of southern Brazil, described from the Rio Taquari-Antas basin — a tributary system of the Rio Jacuí that drains into the Laguna dos Patos on the Atlantic coast of Rio Grande do Sul. The species is identified by its two vertically elongated humeral spots and by a striking feature in mature males: bony hooks present on the rays of all fins, a trait shared with a number of other Astyanax and interpreted as a spawning adaptation. It remains unstudied by conservation assessors and is not listed on the IUCN Red List.

Taxonomy & naming

Astyanax bagual was described by Vinicius Abilhoa Bertaco and Luiz Roberto Malabarba Vigo in 2015, in a paper published in Neotropical Ichthyology (vol. 13, no. 2). The type locality is in the Rio Taquari-Antas basin, part of the Rio Jacuí drainage that ultimately discharges into the Laguna dos Patos coastal lagoon system in Rio Grande do Sul state, southern Brazil. The species belongs to the highly diverse genus Astyanax — one of the most species-rich vertebrate genera in the Neotropical region — within the family Characidae.

The genus Astyanax has long been recognised as probably polyphyletic, and its internal classification continues to evolve as phylogenetic analyses accumulate. A. bagual is not currently assigned to a sub-generic group, and Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records it under the valid combination Astyanax bagual Bertaco & Vigo, 2015. Diagnostic characters include a relatively high lateral-line scale count (37–39 scales), a branched anal-fin ray count of 24–28, and a vertebral count of 36–37, alongside the pair of vertically elongated humeral spots that distinguishes it from several sympatric Astyanax.

Morphology

Astyanax bagual reaches a maximum recorded standard length of 3 in, placing it in the mid-range of the genus. The body is the moderately compressed, deep-bodied oval typical of small Astyanax, with 11 soft dorsal-fin rays and the characteristic two-rayed adipose fin of the family. Two vertically elongated humeral spots — dark blotches on the shoulder region above and just behind the pectoral fin — are among the species' distinguishing marks.

The most structurally unusual feature of A. bagual is the presence of bony hooks on the fin rays of all fins in mature males. Hook-bearing fin rays occur in a number of characid genera and are thought to play a role in spawning behaviour, possibly by interlocking with the female during mating. Their presence on all fins (rather than only the anal fin, as in some other characids) is unusual enough to have been highlighted in the original description and reflected in the species' common name.

Habitat

The species inhabits small dark-water rivers in the upper reaches of the Rio Taquari-Antas basin, at elevations of roughly 984 ft above sea level in the subtropical highlands of Rio Grande do Sul. The rivers of this basin are characterised by clear to tannin-stained, dark water running over beds of rocks and stones, with moderate riparian vegetation providing overhead shade and terrestrial input.

Water depths in these highland streams are typically up to about 7 ft. The system belongs to the Atlantic drainage of southern South America — a region with marked seasonality in temperature, with cool winters and warm summers. As a benthopelagic freshwater fish found in a naturally rocky, moderately vegetated environment, A. bagual occupies the kind of structurally heterogeneous stream habitat common to many highland Astyanax across the Southern Cone.

Feeding

No published dietary study specific to Astyanax bagual is available, but members of the genus are well-documented as opportunistic omnivores that exploit the resources of their local stream environment. Terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates — insects at various life stages, small crustaceans, and zooplankton — typically make up the bulk of the diet, supplemented with plant material, algae, and detritus that enter or grow within the stream.

In the dark-water highland streams of the Taquari-Antas basin, allochthonous input (leaf litter, insects falling from riparian vegetation) is likely significant. In captivity, Astyanax of similar size and ecology accept virtually any small aquatic food: flake, small pellets, frozen bloodworm, Daphnia, and brine shrimp. A varied diet keeps small caracids in good colour and condition.

Mating

Astyanax bagual follows the egg-scattering open-water spawning mode characteristic of most Characidae. There is no parental care; spawning adults scatter adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic plants or over substrate, and the eggs are left to develop unattended. In mature males, bony hooks on the fin rays of all fins are thought to facilitate physical contact between male and female during the spawning embrace — a trait sufficiently distinctive that it is reflected in the species' epithet.

Spawning behaviour has not been described in detail for A. bagual specifically, but the genus Astyanax is broadly consistent: males court females with lateral displays and pursue receptive females into spawning areas. Breeding is likely triggered by seasonal rises in temperature and water level, as is common in subtropical characids of the Atlantic drainage.

Breeding

No captive breeding account has been published for Astyanax bagual, and it is not established in the ornamental trade. General principles applicable to small Astyanax of similar ecology apply: a conditioning period on live and frozen foods, a slight rise in temperature, and the introduction of fine-leaved plants or spawning mops into a separate breeding tank should elicit spawning. Eggs are adhesive and will be scattered among plants or fall to the substrate.

Adults show no parental care and should be removed promptly after spawning, or eggs transferred to a separate rearing vessel, to prevent predation. Incubation times for Astyanax at subtropical temperatures (around 72–79 °F) are typically 24–48 hours, with free-swimming fry appearing a day or two later. First foods should be very fine — infusoria or commercial liquid fry food — followed by newly hatched brine shrimp as the fry grow.

In the aquarium

Astyanax bagual is not established in the ornamental trade and is essentially unknown in the hobby. Its appeal is primarily scientific: the all-fin bony hooks of mature males make it an interesting subject for advanced hobbyists with an interest in characid biology and breeding behaviour. Should the species become available, care would follow the general pattern for small highland-stream Astyanax: a clean, well-oxygenated aquarium with moderate current, a rocky or sandy substrate, and subdued lighting to replicate the dark-water highland stream environment.

Water chemistry in its native Rio Taquari-Antas basin is likely cool and slightly soft to moderately hard given the subtropical highland setting; temperatures should reflect the seasonal range of Rio Grande do Sul, which can be significantly cooler than the tropical defaults often applied to tetras. A group of six or more individuals is advisable to spread any intraspecific aggression and to elicit the natural schooling behaviour of the genus. The species' maximum size of 3 in SL makes it suitable for a medium-sized community of compatible species.

Conservation

Astyanax bagual has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries no conservation status. It is endemic to the Rio Taquari-Antas basin within the Rio Jacuí drainage of Rio Grande do Sul, a relatively restricted range in the context of Atlantic drainage characids. The Rio Taquari basin is subject to the agricultural, urban, and hydrological pressures common throughout southern Brazil's lowland and highland river systems, including catchment-wide land conversion and modification of stream channels.

Whether those pressures affect A. bagual specifically is unknown in the absence of population surveys. The species was described only in 2015, and basic information on its abundance, range extent, and habitat preferences within the Taquari-Antas basin remains unpublished. Until an assessment is conducted, its status should be regarded as data-deficient in practice, even though it falls into the formal category of Not Evaluated.
