Astyanax belizianus is a small, silvery characid native to the rivers and streams of Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua — a typical representative of one of the most species-rich and widespread genera in the New World. Described from the Mullins River of Belize by Marie-Firmin Bocourt in 1868, the Belizean tetra occupies benthopelagic positions in tropical lowland freshwaters, foraging opportunistically on small invertebrates and plant material. Though seldom encountered in the aquarium trade by name, it belongs to a lineage that has furnished hobbyists with some of the most familiar schooling fish in the hobby.

Taxonomy & naming

Astyanax belizianus was described by Marie-Firmin Bocourt in 1868, with the type locality given as Mullins River, Belize. The parenthetical authority reflects that the species was originally placed in a genus other than Astyanax before being transferred to its current home. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) is the governing authority for the valid name.

Astyanax is a large and taxonomically complex genus within the family Characidae. Several regional checklists record A. belizianus from the freshwaters of Central America, including Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua, where it co-occurs with other Astyanax and allied characids. The species belongs to the broadly distributed anostomid-rich assemblages of the Mesoamerican region, though molecular and morphological revisions continue to refine generic boundaries within the group.

Morphology

Like most members of its genus, Astyanax belizianus is a moderately streamlined, laterally compressed characid with a relatively deep body and the characteristic adipose fin of the family. FishBase records a length-weight relationship (a = 0.01047, b = 3.11, total length in cm) consistent with a robust, compact build typical of schooling river tetras.

The species carries the silvery flanks and darkened caudal spot that typify many Astyanax, though data on detailed meristic counts specific to this species are sparse in the available literature. Studies of Astyanax spawning behaviour note a pronounced nocturnal tendency, with spawning activity concentrated after dark. Males pursue females actively, and pairs scatter small, non-adhesive to weakly adhesive eggs in open water or among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation.

No parental care is provided; on the contrary, filial cannibalism — adults consuming their own freshly deposited eggs — is well documented in Astyanax and represents the norm rather than the exception. In natural river conditions this is offset by high fecundity and the dispersal of eggs by current.

Breeding

In the aquarium, Astyanax species are generally straightforward egg-scattering spawners. Conditioned pairs or small groups will spawn over fine-leaved plants or synthetic spawning mops in warm, soft-to-moderately hard water. The eggs, once scattered, receive no further care from the parents, and the adults should be removed promptly after spawning to prevent consumption of the clutch.

Incubation times across the genus at tropical temperatures (75–82 °F) are typically short — a day or two to hatching — followed by a brief yolk-sac stage before free-swimming fry begin to feed. First foods of infusoria, rotifers, or commercial liquid fry food are appropriate, with newly hatched brine shrimp introduced as fry grow. Specific breeding records for A. belizianus under aquarium conditions are not well documented in the hobby literature.

In the aquarium

Astyanax belizianus is not commonly available by name in the ornamental trade, and most hobbyists are more likely to encounter its larger and more colourful congeners. However, the species' ecology and behaviour align closely with other small Central American Astyanax, and husbandry guidance for the group applies broadly. A school of six or more individuals in a well-planted aquarium of at least 23.5–31.5 in in length, with moderate flow and good filtration, provides appropriate conditions.

Water parameters reflecting the species' Central American lowland origins — temperatures of roughly 72–82 °F and pH near neutral — suit it well. It is peaceful toward similarly sized tankmates and mixes readily with other characids, livebearers, and small catfish common to the region. Like most Astyanax it is an active, constantly moving schooler that benefits from open swimming space alongside areas of vegetation.

Conservation

Astyanax belizianus has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; FishBase records its status as Not Evaluated (NE). The absence of a dedicated assessment does not necessarily indicate concern — many wide-ranging, abundant Central American characids remain unevaluated simply because assessment resources have been directed elsewhere.
