Astyanax bifasciatus is a freshwater characin described in 2010 from the Iguaçu river basin of southern Brazil, where it ranks among a diverse assemblage of characids endemic to one of South America's most isolated river systems. Growing to nearly 5 in standard length, it is a mid-sized member of the sprawling genus Astyanax and is distinguished by a pair of vertical dark brown bars — the two-stripe pattern encoded in its Latin name — along with a characteristic humeral blotch and pentacuspid premaxillary teeth. Though not yet assessed by the IUCN, its restricted original range and subsequent discovery in adjacent Paraná headwaters make it a fish of biogeographic interest as well as a model species in Iguaçu ecological studies.

Taxonomy & naming

Astyanax bifasciatus was formally described by Garavello & Sampaio in 2010, based on specimens from the Iguaçu river basin in the state of Paraná, Brazil. The Iguaçu (also spelled Iguassu) is a major tributary of the upper Paraná and is celebrated among ichthyologists for its high endemism — dozens of fish species found nowhere else on Earth evolved in isolation behind the barrier of Iguaçu Falls. Astyanax bifasciatus is one of this endemic fauna.

The species is diagnosed morphologically by infraorbital bone 3, pentacuspid premaxillary teeth, and the shape and position of its humeral bar — characters that separate it from the many overlapping Astyanax congeners found across the Neotropical region. Meristically it carries 9–10 dorsal soft rays, 19–24 anal soft rays, and 36–40 lateral-line scales (FishBase).

In 2020, Terán and colleagues proposed reclassifying several Iguaçu-basin Astyanax into a resurrected genus, Psalidodon, based on molecular phylogenetic work; under that scheme this species would be known as Psalidodon bifasciatus. The reclassification remains debated, and the valid name under Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, the authority for this site, is Astyanax bifasciatus Garavello & Sampaio, 2010. All data and prose here follow that treatment.

Morphology

Astyanax bifasciatus is a moderately sized characin, reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 5 in (FishBase), placing it toward the larger end of the Iguaçu Astyanax radiation. The body plan is the classic Astyanax form: fusiform and laterally compressed, with a fairly deep body, a terminal mouth, and the adipose fin typical of most characids.

The two features most useful for identification are the pair of vertical dark brown bars from which the species takes its name — the anteriormost bar often coinciding with the humeral region — and the characteristic shape of infraorbital bone 3. The premaxillary teeth are pentacuspid (five-cusped), a feature shared with some but not all members of the genus and used diagnostically. Coloration in preserved material is silver to yellowish, with the lateral bars standing out as the clearest markings; live coloration data are sparse in the available literature.

Habitat

The species was originally described as endemic to the Iguaçu river basin (Garavello & Sampaio, 2010), which drains a highland plateau in the states of Paraná and Santa Catarina before joining the Paraná River at the Argentina–Brazil border. The Iguaçu system is hydrologically isolated from the rest of the upper Paraná above the Falls, creating the conditions for extreme local endemism. Astyanax bifasciatus inhabits freshwater, benthopelagic tropical environments within this basin.

In 2017–2018, sampling in headwater streams of the Piquiri river basin — a Paraná tributary that lies outside the Iguaçu drainage — yielded the first confirmed specimens of A. bifasciatus beyond its type basin (Neves et al., Check List, 2020). Morphological and molecular analysis confirmed the identity of these fish. The Piquiri record extends the known distribution into the upper Paraná system more broadly and raises questions about natural or historical connectivity across the two drainages. The combined range thus spans parts of Paraná state, Brazil, with Argentina potentially within range given the Iguaçu's lower course through that country.

Feeding

Field studies of Iguaçu-basin Astyanax assemblages have characterised A. bifasciatus as predominantly herbivorous within its native drainage (ResearchGate resource-partitioning study). This is notable in a genus whose members span a broad dietary spectrum — from insectivores to detritivores to herbivores — and reflects the resource-partitioning dynamics among the many co-occurring characid species in the Iguaçu.

The herbivorous tendency suggests the species grazes algae and plant material in the natural environment, likely supplementing with small invertebrates and detritus opportunistically. Specific gut-content data are sparse in the available literature beyond this broad characterisation. In the aquarium, Astyanax species of this type generally accept flake and pellet foods readily and benefit from a vegetable component — blanched greens, spirulina-based foods, or algae wafers — that reflects their natural dietary preference.

Mating

Specific mating behaviour data for Astyanax bifasciatus have not been described in the literature accessible from the pre-crawl cache. The broader genus Astyanax follows the characid norm: open-water egg-scattering with no pair bond, no territory defence, and no parental involvement. Males typically pursue females and spawn in loose aggregations or pairs over vegetation, substrate, or in open water, with eggs released and fertilised simultaneously as the fish drive alongside one another.

The herbivorous ecology of A. bifasciatus suggests it may congregate in vegetated marginal areas of its stream habitats during the reproductive season — as is typical of plant-associated Astyanax — but confirmation from field observation is absent in current sources. Spawning seasonality in the Iguaçu basin likely tracks the regional wet season and associated temperature and flow cues, as it does for most subtropical South American characids.

Breeding

No dedicated breeding accounts for Astyanax bifasciatus in captivity are recorded in the sources available. As a member of the egg-scattering Astyanax assemblage, it would be expected to deposit small, non-adhesive or weakly adhesive eggs scattered among fine-leaved aquatic plants or over the substrate, with hatching occurring within a few days at tropical temperatures and no parental care thereafter.

Astyanax species generally breed readily in captivity when conditioned on varied live and frozen foods and given a temperature rise to simulate seasonal cues. Adults will consume eggs promptly, so separating eggs or moving adults after spawning is standard practice. Fry are typically free-swimming within a few days of hatching and accept newly hatched brine shrimp and micro-foods from an early stage. Given the paucity of data specific to this species, aquarists should treat it as a generic small-to-medium Astyanax in terms of breeding approach until more detailed accounts emerge.

In the aquarium

Astyanax bifasciatus is not commonly encountered in the ornamental-fish trade, which primarily exports Iguaçu endemics for scientific purposes rather than the hobby market. Information on its aquarium requirements is therefore extrapolated from its ecology and from the general requirements of mid-sized Astyanax species rather than from established hobbyist practice.

As a subtropical species from the Iguaçu highlands, it would be expected to tolerate a moderate temperature range consistent with its native habitat. The Iguaçu drainage can experience seasonal temperature variation in upland reaches; a range in the mid-20s Celsius with slightly cooler winter conditions would be a reasonable starting point. Water chemistry in the upper Iguaçu tends toward slightly acidic to neutral, soft to moderately hard conditions reflecting the sandstone and basalt substrate of the plateau. A spacious aquarium with open swimming lanes, good filtration, and a planted perimeter would suit the species' active, schooling lifestyle. Its herbivorous tendency makes some plant grazing possible, so robust or fast-growing vegetation is preferable.

Conservation

Astyanax bifasciatus has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List. Its original description as an Iguaçu basin endemic placed it among a suite of species of conservation concern, since the Iguaçu's high endemism is paired with significant pressures including hydroelectric development, watershed deforestation, and pollution from agricultural land use across the Paraná highlands.

The 2020 discovery of the species in the Piquiri river basin (Neves et al., Check List) broadens its known range modestly and suggests it may be less narrowly restricted than initially assumed — though a single headwater population outside the type basin does not remove conservation concern if the core Iguaçu population faces threats. The Iguaçu Falls remain a natural barrier that has shaped the basin's evolutionary history; alterations to flow regime and water quality downstream can affect the endemic fauna in ways that species adapted to this unique system may not easily tolerate.
