A small characid of the upper Paraná drainage in southeastern Brazil, Astyanax biotae is one of many stream-dwelling species in the vast and diverse genus Astyanax. Reaching around 2 in standard length, it inhabits first-order tributary streams of the lower Paranapanema River and has since been found in adjoining drainages including the Ivinhema River and rio do Peixe. The species was formally described by Castro and Vari in 2004, and though it remains little-known in the aquarium trade, its modest size and characteristic zooplanktivorous habits make it representative of a widespread ecological guild among small Neotropical characids.

Taxonomy & naming

Astyanax biotae was described by Flávio A. S. Castro and Richard P. Vari in 2004, in a paper published in the Proceedings of the Biological Society of Washington (117(3):330–338). The type locality is a first-order stream draining into the lower Paranapanema River on its left bank, within the upper Paraná river system of southeastern Brazil. The valid name as listed in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is Astyanax biotae Castro & Vari, 2004.

Astyanax is one of the largest and most taxonomically complex genera in the family Characidae, encompassing hundreds of species distributed across North, Central, and South America. The genus has long been considered polyphyletic by ichthyologists, and ongoing phylogenetic work continues to reshape its boundaries. A. biotae belongs to the species-rich assemblage of small characids inhabiting Atlantic Forest stream systems of southern and southeastern Brazil. Subsequent collecting surveys following the original description have extended the species' known range to include tributaries of the Ivinhema River, the rio do Peixe, and other Paranapanema sub-drainages, suggesting it may be more widespread within the upper Paraná basin than the original description indicated.

Morphology

Astyanax biotae is a small, slender characid reaching a maximum recorded standard length of approximately 2 in. Like many of its congeners it has the characteristic Astyanax body plan: a moderately compressed, fusiform body, a relatively large eye, a terminal mouth, and the small adipose fin between the dorsal and caudal fins that typifies the Characidae. The lateral line is complete, and the scales are cycloid.

Detailed meristic and morphometric data are provided in the original description by Castro and Vari (2004), but the species has not been widely illustrated in the popular literature or hobby publications, so its distinguishing characters relative to the many co-occurring Astyanax species are primarily of interest to specialists. In life, small Astyanax typically display a silvery body with a dark lateral stripe or blotch near the caudal peduncle — features broadly shared across the genus — and field identification of the species is not straightforward without recourse to counts and measurements.

Habitat

Astyanax biotae is native to the upper Paraná river basin in southeastern Brazil, where it inhabits first-order tributary streams of the lower Paranapanema River. The Paranapanema is a large tributary of the upper Paraná, running along the border between the states of São Paulo and Paraná. The species has subsequently been recorded from the Ivinhema River, the rio do Peixe, and other Paranapanema sub-drainages, indicating that its range extends across several connected watershed units within this system.

The streams of the Atlantic Forest interior in southeastern Brazil are typically clear to lightly tannic, shallow, and fast-flowing in their headwaters, with sandy or rocky substrates and riparian vegetation providing significant allochthonous input of organic matter and invertebrates. A. biotae, as a benthopelagic species, occupies the mid- to lower water column in these environments. FishBase categorises the species as a tropical, freshwater, benthopelagic fish, consistent with the ecology of many small stream-dwelling Astyanax across the Paraná system.

Feeding

Astyanax biotae is characterised as zooplanktivorous, taking small crustaceans and other zooplankton as a primary dietary component. This feeding guild is well-represented among small characids in South American streams and lakes, where cyclopoid and cladoceran microcrustaceans form an abundant and seasonally predictable prey base. A trophic level of 3.0 is recorded for the species on FishBase, consistent with a diet based predominantly on invertebrate prey rather than plant material.

As with most small Astyanax, the diet is likely opportunistic in practice, and the species probably also takes small aquatic invertebrates and terrestrial insects that fall onto the water surface. In the aquarium, small Astyanax generically accept a wide range of prepared and live or frozen foods, including micro-pellets, crushed flake, Daphnia, brine shrimp nauplii, and similar items suited to their mouth size.

Mating

No specific observations on the mating behaviour of Astyanax biotae appear in the available literature. The genus Astyanax follows the typical characid pattern of egg-scattering open spawning without parental care, and this pattern almost certainly applies to A. biotae given its phylogenetic placement.

In most small Astyanax species, males pursue ripe females through the water column, and pairs scatter adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation, submerged roots, or over the substrate. Spawning may be stimulated by seasonal cues such as changes in water temperature, rainfall, and photoperiod — factors that correspond to flood pulses in Neotropical stream systems. Specific details of spawning behaviour, sexual dimorphism, and seasonal timing for this species remain undocumented.

Breeding

Astyanax biotae has not been documented as a species kept or bred in the aquarium trade, and no captive-breeding accounts appear in the accessible literature. Based on the reproductive biology typical of the genus, spawning would be expected to follow the standard characid egg-scattering mode: adults scatter adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, the eggs hatch within a few days at tropical temperatures, and adults provide no parental care, consuming eggs and fry if not removed.

Small Astyanax species that have been bred in captivity are generally straightforward subjects: a conditioned group, a slightly raised temperature, a spawning substrate of fine plants or a mop, and separation of adults and eggs after spawning. Fry are typically small at hatching and require fine first foods — infusoria or rotifers — before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp. Given the data-sparse status of A. biotae in the hobby, any breeding records would be of genuine interest to the broader community.

In the aquarium

Astyanax biotae is not an established aquarium fish, and it is unlikely to be encountered in the trade under its scientific name. It is one of many small, silvery Astyanax that are occasionally imported incidentally or collected alongside other species, and without specialist identification it would not be separated from the many similar congeners that do occasionally appear in the hobby.

Were it to be kept, the general husbandry guidelines for small Astyanax would apply: a shoaling species best kept in groups of six or more, adaptable to a range of water conditions within the tropical freshwater spectrum, and accepting of standard small-fish foods. Given its origin in the upper Paraná tributaries, water at moderate temperatures — roughly 68–79 °F — with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH and moderate hardness would be appropriate. FishBase records high population resilience for the species, with doubling times under 15 months, suggesting it is likely a robust fish under good conditions.

Conservation

Astyanax biotae is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated 7 November 2018 (Version 2025-2). A Data Deficient listing indicates that insufficient information exists to make an assessment of extinction risk directly or indirectly — the species is known to science but its population size, trend, and the degree of any threats have not been adequately quantified.

The Paranapanema River basin, where the species was first described, has experienced significant habitat alteration over recent decades, including damming, deforestation of riparian zones, agricultural runoff, and urbanisation within the Atlantic Forest region of southeastern Brazil. The Atlantic Forest biome is one of the most threatened on Earth, and the stream fishes endemic to its interior drainage systems face cumulative pressures from these landscape changes. A separate assessment published by Oliveira et al. (2018) in Check List evaluated the species as Least Concern based on its apparently broader distribution across multiple Paranapanema tributaries, and it is possible that a future IUCN reassessment incorporating this expanded range information would revise the status upward.
