Taxonomy & naming
Astyanax caballeroi was described by Salvador Contreras-Balderas and G. Rivera-Teillery in 1985. The type locality is Lake Catemaco (Lago de Catemaco) in the Papaloapan drainage of Veracruz, Mexico, which remains the only confirmed locality for the species. The valid name, with the parenthetical authority reflecting a post-description generic assignment, is recorded in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes.
Astyanax is one of the most species-rich genera in Characidae, with numerous species across the Americas ranging from North America south through most of South America. In Mexico and Central America, the ubiquitous A. aeneus forms a series of ecomorphs in rivers and lakes; A. caballeroi is distinguished as a separate endemic within the Catemaco basin, though it co-occurs with A. aeneus and the two are sympatric in the lake. Research published in Ichthyological Research demonstrated low genetic differentiation between sympatric Astyanax morpho-species within Lake Catemaco and comparable enclosed lake systems, raising questions about the boundaries between lacustrine Astyanax lineages and the role of phenotypic plasticity versus true specific differentiation in this group.
Morphology
Astyanax caballeroi reaches a maximum recorded standard length of 5.5 in, making it one of the larger members of the genus in the Mexican fauna. The body plan follows the typical Astyanax pattern: moderately deep, laterally compressed, with a blunt snout, a terminal mouth, and the adipose fin characteristic of characids.
Detailed external morphology is not extensively documented in the available literature beyond the original description. Like other Mexican Astyanax, the species is likely silvery with a lateral stripe or humeral spot, and the fins are generally colourless to faintly pigmented. The co-occurring A. aeneus can be difficult to separate from endemic lacustrine congeners in the field on colour alone, and the relatively high degree of morphological overlap between sympatric Astyanax in enclosed lakes has been specifically noted for Catemaco in the genetic literature. Trophic level data from FishBase places the species at 2.9, consistent with an omnivorous or plant-supplemented diet typical of the genus.
Habitat
Lake Catemaco (Lago de Catemaco) is a volcanic crater lake of approximately 43 mi² in the Los Tuxtlas mountain region of Veracruz, Mexico. It sits within the Papaloapan drainage and is one of the few sizeable natural lakes in the Gulf lowlands of Mexico. The lake is warm, shallow in its margins, and receives input from numerous small streams draining the volcanic highlands that surround it.
Astyanax caballeroi is described as a benthopelagic tropical freshwater fish, inhabiting the open and near-shore waters of the lake. The Los Tuxtlas region is a biodiversity hotspot for Mexican freshwater fishes, and Lake Catemaco supports a modest but distinctive endemic fauna. The lake has experienced human modification — watershed deforestation, agricultural runoff, and the introduction of exotic species — which has altered water quality and habitat structure over the decades since the species was described. As a lake endemic, A. caballeroi has no alternative refuge should conditions in Catemaco deteriorate.
Feeding
A trophic level of 2.9 for Astyanax caballeroi, as reported by FishBase, places it at the lower end of the omnivore range — feeding substantially on plant material and algae as well as small invertebrates, consistent with the opportunistic, wide-spectrum feeding strategy that characterises Astyanax across its range.
Like most Astyanax species, it likely exploits whatever food resources are seasonally available in the lake: algae, aquatic vegetation, small crustaceans, insect larvae, and any surface-fallen invertebrates. Specific dietary studies for this species do not appear to have been published. In captivity, congeners kept in aquaria take a broad range of commercial foods — flake, small pellets, frozen invertebrates — and A. caballeroi would be expected to feed similarly if kept.
Mating
No published studies specifically address the mating behaviour of Astyanax caballeroi. Based on the reproductive biology of the broader genus, particularly its abundant congener A. aeneus, the species is expected to be an open-water egg scatterer with no pair bond and no parental care. Males likely pursue females in loose aggregations, with spawning triggered by seasonal or environmental cues such as water temperature change or rainfall.
Spawning in lacustrine Astyanax typically involves the dispersal of adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or over open substrate at the lake margins. As with most characids, there is no territory maintenance and no courtship display of the intensity seen in substrate-spawning families; spawning is a brief, active affair with multiple males competing for access to ripe females.
Breeding
Astyanax caballeroi has not, to the best of available records, been bred in captivity or the subject of aquaculture work. The species is a lake endemic that has not entered the ornamental trade in any meaningful quantity, and there are no published breeding protocols specific to it.
By analogy with A. aeneus and other Mexican Astyanax that have been spawned in aquaria, breeding would likely require a well-conditioned group, a slight drop or change in water temperature to simulate seasonal conditions, and the presence of fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop. Eggs would be expected to be small, non-adhesive to mildly adhesive, and to hatch within 24 to 48 hours at warm temperatures. The fry would need very small first foods — infusoria or commercial liquid fry food — before advancing to newly hatched brine shrimp. Adults should be removed promptly after spawning to prevent egg predation.
In the aquarium
Astyanax caballeroi is not an established aquarium fish. It does not appear to have been exported for the hobby trade and is essentially unknown outside its native Veracruz. Any specimens held would be research animals or incidentally collected fish rather than commercially available stock.
Should the species ever become available, its care requirements would align closely with those of other mid-sized Mexican Astyanax: a spacious aquarium with good water movement, neutral to slightly alkaline water at tropical temperatures, and a varied omnivorous diet. Like all Astyanax it is an active schooling fish best kept in groups, and its reported maximum size of 5.5 in SL means it would require a tank suited to medium-bodied tetras rather than the small tanks often used for neon-sized characids. Its endemic status and the pressures on its lake habitat make wild collection inadvisable; any hobbyist interest in the species would be better directed toward supporting its conservation.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Astyanax caballeroi as Data Deficient (DD) in 2018, indicating that insufficient information exists to evaluate its extinction risk directly, not that it is necessarily secure. As a single-lake endemic confined to Lake Catemaco in Veracruz, Mexico, the species has an inherently restricted range with no known satellite populations.
Lake Catemaco has faced significant environmental pressure over the past several decades. The Los Tuxtlas region has experienced substantial deforestation of the surrounding volcanic highlands, with associated increases in agricultural runoff and sedimentation into the lake. Introduced exotic fish species have altered the lake's ecology. These pressures affect the endemic freshwater fish community of the lake as a whole, and a benthopelagic lake specialist like A. caballeroi is vulnerable to any changes in water quality, vegetation structure, or food-web dynamics. FishBase rates the species as having high resilience and low fishing vulnerability, but resilience in the biological sense does not mitigate the fundamental risk of being found in one place. Formal population surveys and an updated IUCN assessment informed by recent data would clarify whether the Data Deficient designation still applies or whether a threatened category is warranted.
