Astyanax chaparae was described by the American ichthyologist Henry Weed Fowler in 1943, with the type locality given as the Río Chapare in Cochabamba, Bolivia. The specific epithet chaparae refers directly to the Río Chapare, the river from which the type specimens were collected. Fowler's name has remained in use without major taxonomic challenge, and Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (the authority for valid names in this atlas) records it as the accepted species.
The genus Astyanax is one of the largest and most taxonomically complex genera in the family Characidae, with well over 100 described species distributed across Central and South America. The genus has been repeatedly revised, and many of its species — particularly endemic, range-restricted taxa known from few specimens — have not been examined with modern phylogenetic tools. A. chaparae sits firmly in this poorly surveyed category: it is represented in collections by few voucher specimens, and no molecular study appears to have placed it in a broader Astyanax phylogeny. It should be regarded as a valid but data-sparse species pending future revision of the genus.
Morphology
Detailed morphological data for Astyanax chaparae are sparse. The species belongs to the typical Astyanax body plan: a laterally compressed, moderately deep-bodied tetra with the large eyes and forked tail characteristic of the genus. Like most small Astyanax, it almost certainly carries a dark mid-lateral stripe running from behind the operculum to the caudal peduncle, and a dark caudal spot — the generic pattern shared by the majority of the genus.
No published maximum length figure for A. chaparae has been located in the available cache; FishBase lists the size as unknown. The species is described as small, consistent with the modest dimensions typical of many Bolivian Astyanax. Habitat
Astyanax chaparae is endemic to the Río Chapare and its immediate drainage in the Cochabamba department of Bolivia. The Río Chapare is a major right-bank tributary of the Río Mamoré, itself part of the Río Madeira system and ultimately the Amazon basin. The river drains the eastern slopes of the Bolivian Andes, passing through montane foothills and into the Beni lowland department as it flows northward — a gradient that creates varied freshwater habitats along its course.
FishBase classifies the species as benthopelagic, suggesting it occupies the lower and middle water column of its river habitat rather than strictly hugging the substrate or living in open pelagic water. Water conditions in Chapare tributaries are typically warm and soft to moderately hard, reflecting both Andean runoff and lowland Amazonian chemistry. No specific temperature or pH measurements for the type-locality habitat of A. chaparae have been published. Data on the species' precise microhabitat preferences — whether it favors fast rocky runs, slower forested pools, or backwater edge habitats — are not available.
Feeding
Nothing has been published specifically on the diet of Astyanax chaparae. By analogy with the many better-studied members of the genus, the species is presumed to be an opportunistic omnivore. Most small Astyanax consume a mixed diet of small aquatic invertebrates, terrestrial insects that fall onto the water surface, organic detritus, and plant material including seeds, fruits, and algae — the broad feeding strategy that makes the genus so ecologically successful across a wide range of Neotropical habitats.

Whether A. chaparae is seasonally synchronised to flood cycles — as many Amazonian characids are — or spawns opportunistically is unknown. The species has not been maintained or bred in captivity to the knowledge of the available sources.
Breeding
Breeding details for Astyanax chaparae are undocumented. Based on the biology of the wider genus, eggs would be adhesive or semi-adhesive and scattered over fine-leaved aquatic plants or over the substrate. Incubation times, fry behaviour, and larval development have not been described for this species. No captive breeding record has been found in the literature or in hobbyist accounts, which is consistent with the fact that the species is not known to have entered the aquarium trade.
The general Astyanax breeding pattern — eggs hatching within 24 to 48 hours at tropical temperatures, with free-swimming larvae appearing within a few days — can be offered only as a baseline expectation drawn from congeners; it should not be treated as confirmed data for A. chaparae specifically.
In the aquarium
Astyanax chaparae is not known in the aquarium hobby and has no established care record. It has not been collected for the ornamental trade and is unlikely to be available from commercial suppliers. Any aquarist who encountered the species would reasonably apply the care standards for similar small Astyanax from Amazonian Bolivia: a well-filtered, tropical freshwater aquarium with warm, slightly soft to neutral water, kept as a school of at least six individuals, with a varied omnivore diet and ample open swimming space.
Given the species' restricted range and Data Deficient status, collection of wild specimens for the hobby would be inadvisable without explicit scientific justification and appropriate permits. This is emphatically a fish for the specialist or researcher, not a species to seek out for the community tank.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Astyanax chaparae as Data Deficient (DD). This designation reflects the absence of sufficient information to determine whether the species meets any threatened-category criteria — it does not mean the species is known to be common or secure. The Río Chapare drainage, while part of the Bolivian Amazon, faces ongoing pressures from agriculture, coca cultivation, road construction, and associated runoff and deforestation in the Chapare region of Cochabamba, which is one of Bolivia's most intensively developed lowland regions.
Because no population surveys have been conducted for A. chaparae, its true status — whether it remains locally abundant, has declined, or is genuinely rare — is unknown. Its apparent endemism to a single river system means that any significant habitat degradation of the Río Chapare catchment could affect the entire known range of the species. Targeted surveys and collection of fresh material for both taxonomic and population-level study would be the most useful steps toward resolving its conservation status.
